I get a picture but no audio.
I saw this discussion:
No Audio when Airplay Mirroring from Mac to Apple TV
BUT in my case I can't change the sound settings to AirPlay.
When I click it with the cursor, it tosses me back to Internal Speakers, and won't let me select AirPlay.
Any suggestions?

Weirdly the solution for me is to change input source (of HDTV) to anything else (like another HDMI port) and change back to Apple TV. It seems more an issue between Apple TV and HDTV.
Restart iMac and redo the Output in Sound in System Preferences.
My problem was slightly different: I could select the apple TV for audio output, but no audio was coming out.
My setup:
apple TV to TV via HDMI, and
apple TV to audio system via optical cable.
I unplugged the optical cable and plugged it back in, and audio started working.
