iPhone 5 screen dims by itself..

This has happened about 6 times since day of release.. while using the phone, in an app, the screen will suddenly go to what I'd guess is the lowest dimming setting.. in the dark I see that the apps are still running, just barely visible. If I can navigate back to the brightness setting, the phone shows it to be at max brightness with auto brightness turned off... the screen stays dim until I move the slider.. as soon as the slider moves the phone lights back up...

I can't force this to happen.. it has been random.. but it has been at least once a day since I received it.

My son say his did this as well.. once..

Anybody else?

updates will not fix it. you have to restore and when asked to restore from backup or set up as new you have to set up as new.

I think that I get the same issue with my iPhone 5, IOS 6.1 : the display (screen) fades away even though there is not enough light. In that case the iPhone becomes totally "blind". I asked my AppleStore and they suggest to restore and to restore indeed as new iPhone and not from the backup but the issue is that you lose all your Text messages (SMS) on your iPhone. They are supposed to remain on your backup on your computer but not anymore on the iPhone. On the computer they remain in the iMessage application. Has anyone an idea on how to resolve this display issue and keeping the text messages (SMS) on the iPhone ? Thanks.

Don't bother. I had this on my 4S and I did an entirely NEW install.

Then I just got the 5 and did not restore from a backup.

I still have the problem on both phones.

You will be just wasting your time. Obviously this is a longer term fix that needs to be addressed.

It's a software bug. I replaced two iPhone 5's and they both have same problem. I noticed my iPhone 4s has similar problem after restoring to 6.1.1. There is nothing wrong with the both. However , i have noticed on some phones that when autobrightness is on, the slider is suppose to move up and down itself when entering bright room or dark room,without locking the screen, but it does not happen.

Very embarrassing indeed ... Autobrightness cursor is "on" and I indeed see no difference when entering bright room or not. Same as you. So no need to replace the iPhone which is still under warranty. Thanks for your help.

Hi i've got the same issue but i live in Italy and i've got an English SIM card and just a few days ago I was on a phone call and it ended the call and said in top left hand corner sim is not valid?!?! What do you guys think it is???

happened to me too. pop sim card out using paperclip (hole on side) and take the sim card out put it back in.

i dont know. it happened to me twice. i think the sim card gets out of place. if it happens too much you should get a new sim card from your cell service provider

This dim issue has nothing to do with the SIM card. It's a software issue. Apple has not fixed the issue with their recent update so all we can do is wait. I've seen the issue on a 4s and the 5. Restoring hasn't fixed it either. Even a fresh install.

mine said no sim a couple times and sim not valid a couple times. verizon sent me a new sim card and no problems since. but when it did happen i could fix it temporarily by removing and then replacing the sim card. it happened to me 4 times over a year so i finally put in the new sim card, called to have it setup w verizon, and no more sim card issues. it probably is a software and hardware issue but new sim fixes it.
