iPhone 5 Verizon LTE problem

I have the 64GB iPhone 5 in white on the Verizon network. Each day at a random time LTE will have a problem where I can't make a facetime call. If I try and run a speed test either my up or down will not complete the test. The only way for me to fix the issue is to toggle airplane mode and as soon as my phone picks up the Verizon LTE signal I can make a facetime call.

I have done some troubleshooting on my own and here are some of those steps and results.

I contacted Verizon and they "rebuilt" my line in their system. I'm not sure what that means, but Verizon assured me it would fix any issues in their systems.

I have the issue on LTE only, 3G and Wifi have no issues with facetime and complete speeds tests every time without issue.

LTE in my area is a full 5 bars and when I'm not experiencing this issue I typically get 10-20Mb down/up

I contacted AppleCare and they suggested I do a reset.

I tried a reset on "Network Settings"

Nothing above has made any progress so tonight I'm trying a full reset on the phone per AppleCare instructions. If that doesn't work I was told to take the phone into an Apple store. The only issue with that is the 1 hour drive one way which I'm trying to prevent.

If anyone else is having the same issue please speak up or point me to a fix you have done.

Thank you,

Tom

Neither Apple nor Verizon had admitted there is any problem here. The only problem I have had VZW admit to is that their 4G/LTE coverage maps do not accurately represent where 4G/LTE coverage actually works in an acceptable manner and that there are towers inside of 4G/LTE areas which are still 3G only, which will cause a phone to bounce to 3G if passing through this location (due to a combination of legal/landlord approval and rollout schedule)

As many complaints I have with my iPhone 5 and Verizon in particular for their very poor LTE coverage throughout Metro Boston and NYC, I have not had the issues you guys are reporting since swapping my SIM, which sounds like it did nothing for you. Can't hurt to try a HW swap to see if it makes any difference.

There is a set of "KOOL" debug menus available on the iPhone 5 which allow baseband reports to be created and sent to Apple. I have not received permission to share these instructions (although I have requested permission to do so). Ask your Apple engineer to share this information with you so that you can collect actual KOOL baseband logs of what is happening on the phone when this happens vs. just sending over a screenshot which may give them nothing to go on.

Someone else posted the instructions, so here they are;

Once you zip up the KOOL baseband files, get them to your Apple tech. I would also record network state, i.e. 3G, o, LTE and dBm reading from field test menu *3001#12345#*

I decided to switch out my BB for an iPhone5 a couple of weeks ago but couldn't decide whether to go with Verizon or stay with AT&T. I looked at the plethora of posts about Verizon LTE issues with the iPhone5 and decided to stay with AT&T.

I am now convinced that there is a problem with the iPhone5/iOS6 which manifests itself differently on the two providers but is a flaw nonetheless. Reason is that my iPhone is usually in a "4G" (i.e. HSPA+) area, and holds onto that signal fine However, if I move to an area that is 3G only the iPhone ignores 3G and drops directly to Edge (2G). It then won't switch back to HSPA+ until the phone is power-cycled. The reason for the different behaviors, perhaps more extreme on Verizon than AT&T, is, I believe, because of the differences in LTE/4G coverage patterns. With AT&T it MAY be that the coverage is either heavy or non-existent ("on" or "off"), while with Verizon LTE the coverage is sparse and distributed over a wide area. I mean, it seems a stretch to think it's a coincidence that this is the first LTE iPhone and users are having problems switching in and out of LTE.

I really don't know (sorry if it sounds like a late-to-the-party knowitall, I don't mean to give that impression). I'm just going to have a big problem if, every time I take my car out of the underground garage, I will have to power-cycle the phone. I also don't know how this thing will behave when I travel into Manhattan.

However, I won't swap out the hardware, I don't think that's a solution, but a SIM swap may be. Does anyone know: if I buy my phone through my carrier can I still go to an Apple store to get it diagnosed and perhaps get a different SIM?

Thanks.

I think you're onto something Nik. Since I turned off my international CDMA setting I would say the problem is about 85% better. However I still experience it from time to time. I definitely notice it when the phone drops down to O and then tries to bounce back up through 3G to LTE (I'm on the Verizon network.)

I also noticed that even after the Verizon carrier settings update but sometimes on my phone is charging I will pick it up unplug it from the charging cord and it will still say LTE or 3G even though I'm squarely within my home Wi-Fi network. I'm going to guess the MiMo antennas pick up whatever signal is strongest and that somehow inside of the phone the software hasn't been refined enough to figure out which signal to go with. I would definitely guess that this is a software issue. Essentially, I think the software is getting confused by the multiple signals coming in through multiple antennas simultaneously.

Because people are having the issue on both Verizon as well as AT&T it very well can't be a network problem. Therefore it has to be a problem with the phone itself. Because so many people in this form string have swapped out their phone, and their SIM cards it can only be a software issue at this point. At least that's my guess.

Yup same problem here. I'm in CT near Hartford and LTE works great until after I make a call it gets hung up on large files or certain websites. Toggling LTE fixes it temporarily. I was recently in NC for a week and had no problems. Verizon told me its because I'm not in a 4g area even though Hartford is dead center of a hot zone on their map.

This is what I sent to apple. For those having LTE connection issues, mainly uploads stuck. The only thing I havent done is replace my phone but based on this thread, it seems to be a carrier software issue (Verizon) and their LTE connections. See below what I've done to attempt a fix but have failed so you save yourself time. Also note this issue does not occur on 3G, only LTE network.

To Apple: With my Verizon iPhone 5 (16gb), after a phone call my LTE shows download speeds but no upload speeds. Browsing works fine but many apps that require uploads fail to connect. After consulting with apple on the phone and at the store, as well as Verizon on the phone and in store, there is still no information. In fact, apple points to the carrier, and the carrier points to apple. I know I'm not alone with this issue. In fact, a coworker of mine has the same exact issue.

The following steps have already been taken and have NOT resolved the issue.

Restored network settings.

Replaced SIM card.

Complete OS restore.

Reconnecting phone to carrier network

The issue can be temporarily resolved by doing anything that turns off network settings and toggles it back on. It's will keep LTE uploads functioning until another phone call is received. For example, airplane mode and then back, or turning of cellular settings and then back own.

I've noticed a lot of us are in the northeast. Please start posting your location. Syracuse, NY here. Might be a pattern.

Syracuse NY. Same problems as mentioned above. Speedtest app confirms great download speed but will not successfully obtain an upload speed. Facebook, Safari, etc all hang like there is no data connection at all. I find it interesting that I have the same issue with my iPad LTE. It will occasionally seem to lose all connectivity, although the service bars still indicate good network coverage. I'm inclined to think it's not a hardware issue with the new iPhone, which I guess is good. Both of my devices are VZW (CDMA). I have turned off LTE on my iPhone all day today, and it has been working fine. No issues so far (since ~7am EST).

Here's what I've done to resolve this issue so far:

1. Reset network settings

2. Closed all active applications

3. Wiped phone and set up as new iPhone

4. Swiped SIM card with new card provide by Apple rep

5. Replaced phone with new phone provided by Apple

6. Called Verizon and spoke to senior supervisor who stated she had never heard of this issue

7. Called Apple and spoke to tech and tech supervisor who said there was no software fix planned for this because they are not aware of the problem

Nothing fixes these issues unfortunately.

You guys all have to call Apple and notify them that this is an issue so that it can actually get fixed.

Otherwise these issues will persist.
