iPhone 5 can't send SMS - gets an error when sending SMS

People - I'm using a Sprint iPhone 5 with my local GSM chip. Everything works fine, except sending SMS.

All basic troubleshooting has been done: checked SMS settings, erased Network Settings, checked SMS Service # through *#5005*7672# and it is fine, restored the phone and re-checked everything above again... and nothing. :-(

Please help?

iPhone 5, iOS 6, Sprint model (A1429), GSM Network

Gents

I have the same problem.

I purchased a Sprint USA unlocked iPhone 5 today in India and everything from WiFI to 3G, from Calling to receiving text messages / sending iMessages work, but the SMSes fail as reported on this forum.

I am not sure what the problem is here but my guess is its for Apple to fix it in their next release for iOS 6 since Sprint cant reach any of us and the only common denominator is Apple.

Apple being apple, i am optimistic that they`ll take cognizance of the issue and sort it out as soon as possible.

Please keep the forum alive should any of you receive any further information.

Regards

Prasad

Same thing here in Russia. It's dozens of us who have the same problem. All Sprint iPhones 5 are not sending SMS. I wrote the report on expresslane.apple.com and made a call to US Apple Care last thursday. They honestly ran through all the possible and impossible settings with me and, of course, none of them worked. As a matter or fact they said that this issue is not well-known, and it was the first time they here about it, even after confirmation with the supervisor.

So I think that step 1 is to force Apple to confirm that this is a massive factory defect issue. This is an obvious fact, hundreds of people have the same problem. To do that, we can call 1-800-APL-CARE and complain

Hey Sergey,

If you can post a bug report here http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html , may be this way we can get more attention to the problem.

In my case I think it's a problem with locking. I verified my IMEI at this site http://dev.mk/2012/08/dev-mk-iphone-imei-checker-with-simlock-status-what-happen ed/ and it's shown as locked ... and Sprint won't unlock it because I don't have an account with them, etc., etc.

On the other forum with the same problem a guy reported that his problem was solved by factory unlocking the phone. Anyway the problem is too wide and needs to be solved for all users, not just for those who can unlock their phone.

BTW we all paid the full price for an unlocked iPhone 5 and seems like I got a locked one ...

Totally agree. My iPhone was purcased with full price without any contracts/restrictions. Why do i have to use some shady deals to unlock it? I'm a legitimate user, i never jailbreak any of my devices.

We need official acceptance of this issue by Apple and at least a promise to fix it ASAP.

P.S.: i also made the feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

P.P.S.: tried the website above, my iPhone is marked as locked as well as yours.

I'm not sure about the problem, if the problem is with the locking of the phone, we might have a problem, as I don't think Apple will ever unlock it officially (although they should unlock it, because it's their fault to sell locked devices with unlocked price)

As for now, everything seems to work fine, only sending SMS doesn't work, which seems to be a software bug, so hopefully they will solve it.

Roman, yes, remember what the "guys with points" said previously, buying an iphone Sprint "off contract" doesn't mean buying an "unlocked" iphone, US stores as you know already don't sell unlocked iphone BUT sell iphone supposed to work fine outside USA on GSM network if you pay the full price.

After this said ... the reality of the situation seems different and confused, Apple Singapore has confirmed to me by email that my iphone is unlocked :"... In our system, your phone is shown as unlocked." ... but when I check the IMEI status of the phone it's SIM locked ... I am afraid this is an unlock/lock process incomplete which needs an action from Apple directly in their database for each phone ( like redo the unlocked writing then restore ), I guess they made that for the guy in Brazil, after restore the iphone everything works he said

Michael,

Yes, I agree with everything you said, it seems to be a problem with bad phone "locking", and indeed it would be normal for Apple to unlock all these problem devices, hopefully they will do something about it.

Point is that we need an official statement about this, otherwise we are stuck as noone from Apple Care or iPhone Support won't help us without an official statement.
