Dent on glass of Retina screen

Hi all,

I have a 3 months old MacBook Pro Retina and recongnized a spot, what I though was a dead pixel.

Looking closer though, I realised that somebody (definately not me!), somehow poked the screen with a pointy item, maybe a pen!

Now I have a little dent in the glass which is so close to the actual panel (screen) that it almost seems like it's 'pressing' the pixel underneath and causing it to glow white on a black background (kinda like a dead pixel).

It could also be, however, that the plastic is refracting the light around the dent? We're talking about a 0.2mm dent here...

Did anyone else come across this? Is the screen really that vulnerable and delicate on a Retina MacBook Pro?

Cheers,

Chris

Dear all,

After the Apple Store in Amsterdam replaced the screen of my MBP Retina (see discussion above), I have been quite happy with the repair and the service offered.

However, today I recognized a new dead pixel... Exactly the same issue as discribed above as well.

Really, really annoying! 😠

So, I have to clear my schedule for a day to go back to the Apple Store again.

I'm still under warranty, but I'm afraid that this is a recurring problem, so I'm almost certain that this dead pixel problem is coming outside the warranty.

Anyone else, that has a repaired screen with dead pixel appearing again?

Take care... Chris

I am currently having the same issue.... I have already had my display replaced due to image retention and not I am seeing around 5 dead pixels with one of them being a cluster of them, but with mine when you run your fingernail over on of them you can feel an indent of something and my research tells me that this is caused by dust against the screen. But I have had previous MacBooks & iMacs and I have never had this before so it must be some sort of issue.......

I am hoping apple will replace the panel, I have already contacted the store and they were nice enough to order a replacement panel in stock for my visit, i have never had a problem with Apple Care before so I am confident they will be supportive in this case.

I have a Genius Bar appointment on Friday afternoon and I will post back how it went.

Well I went to the Apple store today and showed the genius the problem in my case he guys name was John from the Liverpool One U.K apple store and I must say that he sorted the problem in hand swiftly and with professionalism at all times whilst offering me a replacement panel to remedy this issue.

Well done Apple Care you have another satisfied customer again :D.

My MacBook should be ready to collect in a few days.

Kind regards,

Josh

Just to chime in for anyone with similar case, I just got my brand new 15" MacBook Pro Retina last Fri (Nov 1st 2013) and as I was cleaning the display with microfiber cloth (as I have done since 2007 on all my Macs) I noticed a dent in the glass.

Having spent almost €3000,- I defintely do not accept anything like this, especially not after having been using MacBook Air for several years, daily trasnporting it in my backpack to/from work and not ever having an issue. Now after a week in a business bag with special compartment for the MacBook Pro, this appears. Maybe it was there to start with but I can't tell? I thought the front panel was made of glass but when inspecting the "dent" it apears as if some micro dust was logged in the display's panel.

Strangely, after reading this thread, mine is also about 5cm (2 inches) to the right from the center of the display. I wonder how is it even possible that several people report this issue in almost the same spot?

Anyways, have a call set up with Apple.nl tomorrow and hope for a quick fix in the Amsterdam Apple Store. Still annoyed that this is happening.

Hello. I have retina 13 for 3-4 months. Today i find on my screen something wird. I thought that this is a bad pixel but it's not. It's a very little hole in glass. I'm very very careful with my laptop soo i'm 100% sure that this is not my fault. I dont know why apple made soo low quality displays - and of course i dont thing that they will rapair it on warrantly. I search in google and i found many topic like this for retina displays and hole in glass.

My hole is also about 5 cm from center to the right.

I do not have time to give the equipment for inspection. I struggled with poor quality Samsung for half a year. Half a year to have a laptop - two months in repairs. I've had enough.

I thought that Apple makes better quality equipment but as you can see not only looking at my entry - a big mistake. A hole in the glass on the matrix - very, very poor quality glass.

Just a quick follow up. I called Apple and they immediately gave me a case number and ordered a brand new one for me (currently making its way from China). On top of that they arranged for a currier to call me and set up a pick up time of the old one, with no issue to wait with that till the new one is in, as I daily use it as a work computer. So despite the inconvenience an amazing service from Apple.

That kind of support i only experience iwith HP laptop. They give me 7 days to move all data from old laptop to new one and then call for currier and give back old one.

Right now i call to Apple and send them photo of this very very little hole in glass (about 1 pixel size or less).

I'm waiting for response but hotline tell me that this is a mechanic issue soo they don't think that Apple will rapair it on warrantly. But if they will do as You said - i will be very happy. I'm programmer and i just cant give my laptop for 7-14 days to repair.

Apple said - self-generated holes in glass is a cosmetic defect and they wont repair it. So Apple Retina dispay can have hole in glass 🙂 This is Apple quality! 🙂 This is my first and last Apple.

Here is photo of this hole. It's little blured because of my camera but it have regular size of 0.5-1 pixel in photoshop with 1680x1050. Also as you can see there is one blue pixel on screen - this is i think bad pixel - i do not see it without photo zoom.

Same thing, same basic spot (north and right of center) on my new 15 inch MacBook. It's my first Mac, less than 2 months old and I've really babied it. It's a physical dent in the screen, very obvious especially on light-colored backgrounds (like this forum).

I bought AppleCare in addition to the regular warranty so in a couple of days (after the holiday) I'll make an appointment and haul mine in. WIsh I had taken the time to research this sooner, I was just at the store for a workshop on Saturday.

You are one of many with this issue. Apple must know about this low quality glass and do not want to repair it because in next two month you will go second time to repair ... I will never buy Apple product. Very low quality, very, very low performance ( MacBook 13 Retina ) and no support with "standard" warrantly - and this all You can have ONLY FOR 2.499 $ ! 😀
