Where has this feature gone? I remember when I bought my Macbook Pro 13", the headphone jack was advertised as both a headphone and line in jack.
However it is now advertised as just a headphone jack, this is not what I bought.
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
It's changed in name only, you can still run external powered speakers and change a few preferences in Audio/Midi set up.

I've had a look around the Audio MIDI Setup app, but there's no mention of using the headphone jack as a line in device?

The headphone port was advertised as a combination port accepting line in.
So why when I put a cable into the headphone port is there no option of using this as the line in?
Can't understand why a headphone port would accept line in as well as headphones and speakers are output devices.Was this in Lion ? I went from SL to ML.

I just looked at the manual (on-line) for the computer and it does show it as an "audio in/out" port.
XcallibuR - Perhaps you need to have an input device in the port before it will show it as an option. You didn't type whether you had one in or not.
Its a firmware update that has removed it unfortunately, if you look here: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP645 you can see the 2011 Macbook Pro 13" was advertised as featuring a combined headphone/line in port. The issue I have, is that the feature was advertised as being on the 2012 Macbook Pro 13", but has now been removed from the features list.
This was a feature that need not be removed, you can see people's gripes with its removal here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3679138 I am now forced to unnecessarily buy an external soundcard, which is an annoyance since the laptop I bought was advertised as having this feature. Thanks for your attempt at helping anyway.
I've tried it with an input device, well a cable specifically, to no avail unfortunately. See my previous post.

Not the OS, it's the machine, until the 2012 model 13" MBP's came with 1 minijack port, you could use it either as an input or an output depending on choice in Settings. I don't have a 2012 model so can't test.

Some people with pre 2012 Macbook Pro 13" machines who have updated to 10.7.4 Lion/10.8 Mountain Lion have reported the loss of the feature. So I predict the cause of the loss will be a firmware update. I doubt of any changes to the 2012 Macbook Pro 13" hardware.

Maybe, but I don't have a 2012, I have a 2011 and a 2009 and on both machines (both running ML) I have audio in/out.
Seems, Apple is becoming painful lately.
The 2012 13" MacBook Pro's have the Audio in/out removed. It is now used only for headphones out (check the online specs)
Sadly I found that out after I got a new Macbook, so I have to send it back for refund and get something else. I never thought the newer 13" Macbook's will have less then the old ones. That's kind of ********.. well... money talks... 😟
Interesting news about my audio issue...
I finally called Apple Support after googling around for similar issues and I couldn't find anything. I thought that I might have a hardware problem, but it turns out that my Mac works perfectly. One of the advisors I was talking with told me that the audio jack on the newer MacBook Pros (with the dual Line In/Line Out port) cannot simply have a 1/8th stereo audio cable and it reading as "Line In" under the Sound pane in System Preferences. He said that for whatever reason, Apple removed the option to do that.
He told me that my only option was to use a USB sound card with a Line In port on it, because that will show up under the Input tab in the Sound pane in System Preferences.
Then he said that this was something that the engineers could work on and told me to fill out a formhttp://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and if they get enough of these feedback requests about the Line In issue, they might consider making a fix for it. I asked the advisor if they actually read these requests, and he said that all of the teams have to read these requests.
So in the meantime I ordered a USB sound card so I can record sound coming into the Mac.
So it would be cool if everyone could go to MacBook Pro Feedback and request to have the option to select what the Audio Input can be used for, then maybe they will consider making a fix for this issue.
I have the 13" MacBook Pro 2.9Ghz i7 MD102B/A 8GB Ram. Purchased on the 4th March 2013 from PC World.
The Mac came loaded with Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
The machine is advertised as having Audio Line In/Out. An audio line in option was very much part of my purchase decision.
Today I needed to use the Audio Line In function. Like others disovered.... It's not there!
I'm quite frankly very annoyed that I have bought something that is NOT as advertised and therefore blatantly (arrogantly) contravenes the Sales of Goods Act 1979.
• Wherever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale).
