Purchases are tied to the Apple ID account that was used to make the purchase or download forever, until Heck freezes over. So as long as apps that were downloaded with an Apple ID reside on the phone whenever they update you will be prompted for the password associated with that Apple ID. The only way around this is to delete all apps that were downloaded with the old Apple ID. If you still want those apps you will have to purchase or download them using the new Apple ID.

That's why you should never get a new Apple ID. If your email changes you need to change the Apple ID to match the new email, not create a new Apple ID account.

You also didn't notice that the post you responded to was made almost 7 years ago. Nothing has changed since then.

You can go to the App Store App, tap on your pic on the top right corner and then on Purchased.

Search for an App Name, if it does not appear in the results, then the App was not downloaded with the currently logged in Apple ID.

There's also the update process. An App that belongs to a different Apple ID will request it and its password when updating.

It's not a fast, or straight forward process, but it can be done.

It is, I'm sorry to say, largely a problem of your own making. When your email address changes, you should update your existing Apple ID, not create a new one.

You can tell if an app was purchased under a different Apple ID that the one you are currently using if, when you try to update it, you get a password prompt. So, try updating apps one at a time.

In the beginning, commercial copyrighted software and other intellectual property were not tied to an AppleID as Apple sold nothing through online stores using your AppleID. Originally the only place anyone could use an AppleID with was the developers site, which was free to use.

Now that licensed IP is tied to your AppleID they have to restrict what changes you can make to your AppleID. It is the same for every online login ID you use with a proprietary online store front selling use licenses for IP. So there really is no issue for Apple to solve. AppleIDs work exactly as intended and as required by consumer law.

This isn't necessarily true. For example, with our Adobe Accounts - we were able to move the accounts into a parent account and all that data merged into the new account. Another instance with Adobe is that we were able to merge two accounts with different email addresses into the most recent. Adobe does this for cyber security reasons to reduce the opportunity for hackers to gain access. Orphaned accounts can easily be spoofed/hacked.

Adobe isn’t running online store fronts selling user licensed software and content from other independent intellectual property owners. You are not comparing similar things at all. A more appropriate example would be an MS online account, or Sony PS account, or a Google Play account, or an Amazon account since all of those offer access to purchase software use licenses and other independently copyright material. And not one of them offer, nor could offer, to merge user accounts as it would be a violation of either consumer law (depends on jurisdiction) or their distribution agreements with those third parties.

Apple cannot transfer a third party personal use software or copyright content license from one online account to another since Apple doesn’t own the intellectual property those licenses apply to.

Account creation and management. I understand that 3rd party licensing ... I’m referring to the apple account. Much like any user account. From an end user perspective

What do you mean by the “Apple account”? You have an AppleID which is nothing more than a unified login ID. Every Apple service you use with that AppleID is a separate account - so you sign into iCloud, FaceTime iMessage, the App, iTunes, Mac or iBook stores with that AppleID and you create an account for that Apple service. Since your AppleID is the unified login for all those Apple online services accounts, including those store front accounts selling third party licensed intellectual property, an AppleID cannot be merged with another.

An AppleID by itself is not a truly a user account. It is a login ID used to create accounts for different services all provided d by the same company, namely Apple. So merging an AppleID would require merging multiple accounts, including those which sold you licenses for third party software and content.

So Michael Black by your logic a company that purchases third-party software would also have to pay for those licenses again if they changed their name. The issue with the Apple ID format being an email address where it should be a UserID that has the flexibility to update the user name when it changes is the problem. The email address dependency by Apple is so 1995 it's pathetic! Open source is the way of future because big business and their rigidity and proprietary systems makes everything so difficult and only suits their needs while not addressing the needs of the users that have supported them. Time to transform into a new paradigm.

I have had the same AppleID for two decades. I have changed the primary email address for that AppleID 3 times in that time. It is trivially simply to change the primary email address used as your AppleID.

And companies and education institutes would be buying with Apple’s bulk purchase accounts, which in turn can be readily edited by whomever administrates that to reflect changes in company name, assigned admin, etc.

That makes no sense whatsoever. You don't actually own any application you pay for. You paid for a license to use the application. And you paid for it under an Apple ID, which ties the application to the ID it was purchased under, just like it would on ANY OTHER platform. You can take anything you purchase from device to device to device as long as you use the same Apple ID you used when you purchased it. There is truly no reason to need to EVER change your Apple ID. And as Lawrence correctly suggests, if security is an issue, all one has to do is changed the password one uses with their Apple ID.

You did not purchase a “thing”. You purchased a limited license to use someone’s software. And that license cannot be transferred from one online ID to any other - just as you cannot transfer PS4 or Xbox licenses from one user ID to another, or MS software license from one online ID to another, etc, etc. Online IDs used with limited software licenses are not transferable from one online ID to another. The Apple App Store is not doing anything remotely different or unique in that regard. Online software has been licensed this way for decades now.
