Thanks!! Absolute life saver! This is the only way - look no further!

Actually, as has already been pointed out multiple times, the solution found in the post you're replying to is completely and utterly inadequate. So you do need to look further. Please see one of the other responses, directing you either to instructions by Linc Davis or to the The Safe Mac website.

As a side-note to this, a question arose about 'Torch Browser pop-ups' and a free home tab in their FireFox browser; about all I could find was dated -- with suggestions it may have something to do with Conduit.

Without more inside information from the computer's system,

whatever files may be present within it, is unknown to me...

Here's the link to that ASC discussion:

Perhaps if the OP there revisits his topic, or replies there now,

more information may be gained on the topic from experience

so I am asking that you look into it.

Thanks for reading this.

As far as I have ever been able to determine, Torch is a legit browser, although "legit" may be a bit of a stretch for a browser whose main point of interest appears to be an integrated torrent client. I've seen it offered up in some sketchy places... but as far as I can tell, it doesn't really install any sneaky stuff. It may or may not (I'm not sure, I haven't tested it that much) display ads, but if the user chooses to use a browser that displays ads, that's a very different thing than all the rest of this sneaky adware that displays ads in all browsers.

There certainly may be more to the Torch story... but if so, I haven't been able to suss it out yet.

Thanks.

When I searched online, several results implied what was said to be a 'malware virus' and other names for the issues some had; plus there were a few dubious offers for free download or paid download tools to remove the Torch Browser and associated misfit activities thought undesirable.

Several of those, from 2013. The offers for uninstaller tools were as scary to me as the issue was troublesome to the original poster in the recent ASC thread.

Best regards... 🙂

Yeah, unfortunately, it's become all too easy to find scads of "malware removal" sites these days that are just scams, usually to install more malware. (After all, if you're looking for help removing some piece of malware, that means either you're willing to download junk or you've got a vulnerability that allowed it to be installed. Knowing the malware allows the scammers to target the delivery.) Sometimes, these sites exist for software that isn't actually malware, but that people commonly search for removal instructions for.

Uncheck the "Enable Omnibar" box.

Is nobody actually reading any part of this topic? I don't understand why people keep coming here and posting utterly ineffective removal "solutions" when there have already been working solutions posted!

Removing the Omnibar extension is completely inadequate. There are many other components of Genieo running in the background that this does not remove, and neither does the uninstaller. This has all been thoroughly documented in previous posts on this topic, with links to appropriate instructions being given no less than 7 times!

There is a 'previous page' button near the bottom of the thread

where you can go back to the beginning of this discussion to

see the same answer (one that works, takes a bit of effort) to

the question appears seven or eight times...

The issue is within the 'adware' you

inadvertently installed in your Mac.

Seems the instructions, updated recently, are

in the links on pages before your question:

Adware Removal Guide - Genieo

http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/

This is a path most likely to succeed

...if you have good attention to detail.

If not, it won't really go away.

Thanks Paul 31 and tomas R, I have successfully deleted Genieo. I did originally use the Genio uninstaller and when only parts of it were removed I realized something was not quite right. My son had tried to install some app for minecraft and ended up with genieo being installed.

So, definately follow the addware removal guide. I did have a problem with the final step which was to remove the omnibar, but then I went to preferences and deleted it that way.

Cheers

I was trying to follow the instructions after deleting the app itself, and when I tried to follow the steps to make sure there were no traces left, the following message popped up after I tried locating the file from the /private/etc/launchd.conf path:

"The folder 'launchd.conf' can't be opened because you don't have permission to view its contents"

Same happened to these two paths:

/usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib

/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib

What should I do?

Thanks!
