Also, I think I installed mine when installing Microsoft Silverlight that was "required" by the Netflix website in order to watch Netflix online.
There has been one actual answer, not a simple fix;
but not impossible if you apply the resolution here:

{Perhaps Thomas R. will see your above question.}
Microsoft Silverlight? Usually one would just go to
the company who made the software, to get it...
Unless some old version is needed (if supported)
then a few oldapp sites 'may' still have clean files
for download. The joys of adware or malware!
For other adware removal, see home page links
to additional information at TheSafeMac.
Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
I have the same issue. I didn't even intend to install Genieo but did by accident. I followed the instructions on the FAQ and it told me I had to install the uninstall so I did and it still will not uninstall. I want this removed permanently. How do I do this???????

Same happened to these two paths:
/usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib
/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
Those are files, not folders, so there is something strange going on. Everybody should be able to read the folders that those files are contained in, so perhaps you should run Disk Utility "Repair Permissions" on your boot drive.

Did you download Silverlight from the Microsoft web site or someplace else?

As has been said numerous times already, the un-installer recommended by Genieo Support either leaves files behind or installs additional files, so the only solution is to follow the instructions that K Shaffer posted just before you:

Hi, I finally called Apple Support to help me. He walked me through several steps. I can't repeat the instructions (too many to remember). If you still need help, you may want to call them. Good Luck
Thanks. As mentioned, I called Apple Support. Those instructions posted were too complicated for me -- I'm not that great with computers.
Thanks though!
The way I removed Geneio from constantly showing up in the safari search engine was after I deleted the application and uninstalled it was to uninstall omnibar from safari.
1)preferences
2)extensions
3)omnibar
4)uninstall.
Then I reinstalled omnibar by going to:
1)safari
2)preferences
3)extensions
3)get more extensions, goes to apple website add omnibar again
4) go to preferences and extensions again and in omnibar click and select which search engine you use google, yahoo, etc.
This is how I fixed on safari geneio being the search engine. It went back to my normal settings.
I downloaded Silverlight from the Netflix website.
Also, I just ran a permissions repair and the same message popps up.
Any other ideas?

What version of OS X are you running? WIth Lion and above you must run permissions repair from the Recovery partition to repair user permissions:

...and you probably still have actively-running Genieo-related processes, left behind by the uninstaller. See the removal directions referred to earlier in this topic.
I have read all the posts on uninstalling Genieo but they will not work. No one mentions what to do when quiting genieo will not work. When I click on the icon to quit it won't do anything, it just says loading... even though it is obviously running. Hoping Thomas_r can help me. I have read your page also The safe mac. I tried following directions but didnt get far as my macbook wont even allow me to quit genieo. Slowly but surly going crazy. Talked to Apple and the guy told me he was not familiar with "third party software" and told me to try uninstaller!
Please help
Rosie
Screw you Genieo
Activity Monitor may show you the process & allow force-quitting it, as may the Force Quit item in the Apple menu at top left of your screen.
Hi,
I had the same issue and Apple Support was able to help. I suggest calling back and speak with someone who can figure it out. The guy who helped me had to research it and he helped me uninstall and delete it permanently. As you know the uninstall doesn't work and could create more issues. Someone posted instructions on how to uninstall but it was too complicated for me. Good Luck
