I'd trust uninstallmacapp as much as genieo, don't download anything from there. It's just a front or marketing for mackeeper.
etrecheck appears entirely harmless, & would have proved useful here, although it seems that you have now found the cause.
Thanks MadMacs & thomas & andyBall. Dont get upset because I was un-trusting. I think I have reason to be.
I appreciate your logic about the Level 7 & forum mods reviewing a potential scam. All good points.
Ill give my computer another chance to see if it starts up an Installer instance. If it does Ill get etrecheck.
Thanks for all the help guys.
Just to chime in, it looks like those two files were the only other things not already in my removal guide. I've added them now.
Also, interestingly, this Screenflow installer not only installs Genieo, but CleanMyMac 2 as well. Looks like we have a new contender in the scam marketing game. I've e-mailed the folks at MacPaw about this to see what they say.
I will warn you right now. If you do not believe me then you are screwed. At one point genieo makes a folder called genieo hack. If that happens go to the apple store immediatly. Telling you right now, delete it. Btw genieo is a virus

Most of us here have helped hundreds of Genieo users and I've never heard of a folder called "Genieo hack". It's not that I don't believe you, just that I'd like more information, like where did it show up and when (since there is now a Genieo 2.0 version).
Technically Genieo is not a virus. It does not spread by itself and requires the user to agree to it's installation, even though it may not be obvious to all users that what has happened. It's considered adware by about half of the A-V scanning software and ignored by the rest (including Apple's XProtect system). The application is code signed using an Apple Developer ID which apparently means that Apple is OK with it.

I have the steps to remove this, but even with hidden files exposed , I CANNOT find this: private/etc/launchd.conf. It is not in the etc. folder. Any suggestions?
Hi all,
I have followed
http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/
guide step by step.
I checked for
/private/etc/launchd.conf
and for all the paths under step 3
but none of them seem to exist.
BUT in the folder LaunchServices is still a file called
com.genieoinnovation.mac.extension.client
Sophos marks this as a threat but fails to clean it.
I do not really want to risk shutting down the computer before it manage to delete it
in order to avoid the freeze response mentioned by Reed.
I have conducted a custom scan in sophos but that doesn't clean it either.
I also cannot delete it "by hand"
Has anyone experiences with this?
I'd be more than grateful!!!
Best,
Winja
Please be sure to read the directions more carefully. Specifically, under step 2:
It is possible that you will have neither the launchd.conf file nor any .dylib file installed. This can happen if you opt out of changing your browser’s home page during Genieo installation, and some newer variants of Genieo do not install this file.
and under step 3:
Some of them, including the Genieo application, may not be present; remove the ones that you do find.
>>even with hidden files exposed , I CANNOT find this: private/etc/launchd.conf. It is not in the etc. folder. Any suggestions?
If you looked in the folder manually, with hidden files visible, & saw all the other files & folders , but not that one... then it's not there, which isn't uncommon.
I see. I was just paranoid to continue removing the files I did find because the instructions also said the computer would freeze if I didn't remove that one first. However if it is not there it is not there. I guess I have to proceed. Thanks for your help.
Look, I'm sure you get LOADS of requests from panicked people who did not follow your directions carefully -
I did. I also saw the parts you quote but they don't answer my question.
I did not find any of the paths you posted, so ergo I did not remove any files.
HOWEVER I do still have the one file I mentioned sitting in my LaunchServices
which I CANNOT remove.
Though I sure would like to 😉
So, basically, I got your instructions, I followed them carefully and yes,
Genieo might NOT be installed on my computer.... though seeing as the
com.genieoinnovation.mac.extension.client
is still there I do not want to turn off my computer before I know
what it is and how it'll affect a restart.
Has anyone any experiences with this client file??
Thank you. I have removed everything I could find and used EtreCheck:
