Bad print to new Epson after OS X update

After doing the last update from 10.8.3 we have been unable to get good prints to our new Epson printers (7890 and 9890). Has anyone heard of this or better still knows how to correcr this? I have tried resetting the print system and reinstalling the driver, I contacted Epson support but they were not useful.

So far this seems to be the only solution (not 100% it works):

User uploaded file

1. Click Apple...System Preferences...Print & Fax/Scan
2. Select your printer and delete it (click -)
3. Download the latest printer driver from Epson.

4. Open Mac HD/Library/Printers and trash the Epson folder *
5. Open Mac HD...Applications...Utility
6. Double-Click Disk Utility
7. Select the Mac HD and perform: Repair Disk Permissions
8. Install the downloaded driver normally
9. Click Apple...System Preferences...Print & Fax/Scan
10. Add a printer (Click +)
11. Select your printer and click Add
12. Try printing
*this will uninstall ALL Epson printers

Having the same "beer goggle" problem. I have spent many hours on the phone with Epson and Apple. Each person I talk to at Apple says that this is the first they have heard of this happening.

I did the above reinstall-repair disk permissions-etc... to fix my 7890. Worked great for a day or two! Then, tried to print from my desktop Espon Photo 1400, and now it's not working at all. Updated the driver for that one, now my 7890 is messed up again.😠

So I guess it's either one or the other. I currently have an open case with Apple and will hopefully have an update soon.

I have had the same experience. My Printer is the Epson Stylus Pro 7900

I called Epson and did not accomplish much. The same with Apple, they said I was the only victim of this problem as far as they knew. I referred them to this forum. I have not received any update from either company.

After I desinstalled and reinstalled the printer following the directions suggested in this forum the printer worked for just a couple of hours. The curious thing though is that it worked OK with images I processed in photoshop after the reinstalation of the driver etc. It did not work with older images. Three days later nothing worked, new or old.......back to the same issue.

It is a real problem. Thankfully I have a Mac Air. I did not upgrade the OSX in that portable computer . I installed the printer's driver in that computer and I use it in my network. In other words I work in my main computer but when I print I choose the printer driver in my laptotop(network) It takes a little longer because the laptop is connected to the network wirelessly but it works well with all pictures as it should be. The printer's cable is hooked to the MacAir.

The indiference demosntrated by these two prime companies, Apple and Epson is beyond belief.I felt like they did not care and in fact probably they do not. Also I am surprissed that the number of users with this problem seems to be to little. It is clearly a problem with the OSX upgrade. I tested it with a third computer. Another laptop ( this one belongs to my wife) I used it like I described with my Mac Air in the Network, It worked fine. Then I did the upgrade of OSX and voila......the same problem.

I hope we will find a solution. In the mean time if printing is mandatory follow my suggestions. it will work OK for sure. I have spent many hours trying a variety of steps suggested by some of my "computer gurus"

So far nothing works...

good luck to us all

I am having exactly the same problem with my 7900 printing using my Mac Pro. I get the scrambled printout, but only when using roll paper. Prints on sheet paper are fine.

However, I am able to successfully print the same images on roll paper with my Macbook Pro.

Both computers have the latest version of OSX.

So updating OSX to 10.8.3 isn't the problem, as far as I can see.

But, and this might be the key, the Macbook Pro, which prints correctly, has a far older version of the printer driver, 6.25. The Mac Pro has version 9.04.

Has anyone tried to drop back to an older version of the printer driver? Does anyone have the dmg names of older versions? My goal is to delete the current printer driver from the Mac Pro and install a previous verson and see if that works.

An Apple "Genius" advised me to reset my NVRAM/PRAM on startup which I did. To do this:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Then I reinstalled the printer driver as per R.soames' instructions:

1. Click Apple...System Preferences...Print & Fax/Scan
2. Select your printer and delete it (click -)
3. Download the latest printer driver from Epson.

4. Open Mac HD/Library/Printers and trash the Epson folder *
5. Open Mac HD...Applications...Utility
6. Double-Click Disk Utility
7. Select the Mac HD and perform: Repair Disk Permissions
8. Install the downloaded driver normally
9. Click Apple...System Preferences...Print & Fax/Scan
10. Add a printer (Click +)
11. Select your printer and click Add
12. Try printing
*this will uninstall ALL Epson printers

I'm happy to say all is back to normal...at least for now. The last prints done on the Mac Pro using roll paper were not scrambled. Thanks to this thread, I did not pull the graphics drives out of the Mac Pro and take it in for repair. I thought this was a motherboard problem. Because of this thread I know it isn't and the situation seems to be resolved. I'd love to know what caused us all this grief, seemingly at the same time. If the cause is pinpointed, I hope that explanation will be posted here.
