Ok, so this happene before... and then it happens a second time...all while studying abroad in India. I read this and I was like hmmmm sounds sketchy, but I am desperate... guess what?? It worked!! Thanks Riley!!!
OMG Riley you just saved my Ipad!! I had the same propblem with my Ipad and I could hear notifications coming in, but my screen was black. I thought it was going to be insane to knee my Ipad, but it really worked!! You saved my life... the nearest Apple store to me is 4 hours away!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!
Ha! Awesome suggestion, completely worked for me! I dropped my ipad the other day and dented the corner a little bit. Worked fine right after, but this morning nothing but the black screen. I didn't like the idea of kneeing the ipad so thought I'd try the twist method first. Ipad screen works perfect again! Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for the advise , a slight twist and it worked again. It seems Apple should look carefully at this default and try not to sell 35 euros to send a "fix" that would lead to a 250 euro repair. Thanks again
I feel the need to jump on the bandwagon here and say that Riley Stewart is a hero. How did he even know to knee it in the first place? We need more brave men like him pushing the frontiers of tech repair.
I'm going to start kneeing my iPad 2 on a weekly basis now. Maybe it'll turn into a Retina display
I cannot believe twisting the corners a little worked like that! Unbelievable! Thank you so much for the help.
My screen fully came back!
Does anyone know why it goes to black like that? And why the twist works?
Crazy but amazing!
Riley Stewart you are a stud when it comes to strange but effective solutions.
Like everyone else here I was dubious and tried every other alternative. But without an Apple store within 200 miles of me I finally tried your method. Simply amazing.
I thank you and when my daughter wakes up she will elevate you upon her pedestal of heroes for this solution . She was in tears last night because she thought her Ipad was lost forever. Thank you so much for this solution.
And to the apple techs that say reboot it or buy a new ipad----go to **** you inconsiderate money grabbing (*&^%$# ********!!!

Nice one. Kneeing it did not work for me, neither did the twist. What did work - I held the laptop on diagonal corners, screen facing me, and applied pressure with the thumbs of each hand to 'bow' the device a little. Worked like a charm, thanks!
THANK YOU for suggesting this divine method.
I was on the verge of tears trying to fix my mom's iPad1. I brought the iPad down on my knee a few times but it didn't work at all (my knees hurt) until I specifically targeted the area below the headphone jack. The trick is to bring down the ipad on your knee with full-force and the first try it worked. 😁
It happened to me today and upon reading the post and solutions, I tried it all with my Otter box cover on to no eval, then removed it and smacked it on my knee a bunch of times, tried the twist method then tried to smack it on my knee again around the headphone jack area too, still nothing but I can see a little bit of light coming through when I hit it in that area. Still nothing. I am hoping someone else has another trick. How do you do a hard reset if you can without the screen being on?
I concur. I tried all the "official" methods to get black screen fixed. I could hear Siri asking what I wanted to do, I could see iPad in iTunes, it was at 100% memory. I was out of options when I found this thread. And it really did work. Thank you Riley!
Brilliant!
Although I found a hard rap upon the back (precisely upon the Apple logo) to be more effective then my knee (ouch!), it worked instantly as well. After monkeying with it for weeks, I'd abandoned all hope until finding this post.
Many thanks!! 😎

Absolutely unbelievable! Kneeing it worked--like a magical charm! I was so dreading taking my mom's iPad to the carnival of an Apple store. Found this post, and Riley's suggestion. Tried it as I, too, like many others was extremely desperate, and it worked!!!! Thanks sooo much! Riley is an Apple rock star--totally!
HOLY COW!
My iPad has been inoperable for 7 or 8 months now. In fact, I just went out and bought a new one, put this one in a drawer intending to do something with it later and then forgot about it. I just pulled it out of the drawer so I could try to sell it on Cragislist as a broken iPad when I thought I might look into fixing it one last time. I came across this post, dropped the iPad screen-down on the carpet, slapped the back of it, picked it up, and now it works! I'm not sure what I'll with it now, but if nothing else, it's at least worth more functioning than broken. Thanks, Riley!
This happened to my cousin's iPad mini this morning!!! I have been on the web looking for things to do ALL day!!!
Hitting it over my knee didn't help. Neither did twisting the screen any which way.
What did help.....my dad smacking it glass down again his bare thigh. So THANK YOU RILEY AND JESUS!!! We don't have to buy a new one!
