How do I enable SNMP on Airport Extreme 802.11ac?

Apple confirmed it will not be brought back to life and have not commented on any other means to monitor. It will and does work on older Aiports and thier firmwares. If the firmware updates you out, then you downrev the firmware. If the application takes away the tunable, you downrev the application until you can find an airport replacement. *(sad but true).

Where is the support doc that states that SNMP is no longer supported?

In the support case that I had escalated where they called me back and said it would no longer be supported. It is not in the support doc that it is supported because it is NOT supported. Also, it is not in the support doc that the windows client is supported because it also is not supported. I did ask if either would be supported in the future and the windows client was yes, and snmp was no. I did not get an answer as to if they would be eliminating the snmp function from all of the previously released airports and did not get an answer either way. The only hard answers were they were not supporting snmp on the new AE or AE with disk and windows clients were coming in future. The setup was confirmed to be able to be done with the ipad / iphone and restore of your baseconfig could only be supported on a mac OSX.

I have confirmed that the new AE / AE timecapusle does not have snmp ports available nor does the application show it available. I put the old 5th gen AE back in and I do see the snmp function available and can poll it for it's services so I took the new AE back in under the 14 days no questions asked return policy.

I am sad to see this service go since I did (for unknown circumstances) did have a 'blip' on my support at home radar where netflix did slow and buffer a couple of times with the wife and kids watch a movie while I was vpn into work and I could not 'see' what could have been affecting the apple tv and it's download. I didn't record any bandwidth on the downstream netgear switch and speedtest suggested all was well on my ipad (wireless) and desktop, so this anomaly that I am accountable for since I work from home makes me uncomfortable since this new AE became 'un supportable' with it being a proverbial and ironic 'black box' that I technically could not troubleshoot. I monitor dns response times, ect so with wireless speeds being invisible, I am not happy with >75% if my household clients being wireless and non monitorable.

Oh well. Ubiquity and others are up for grabs.

My guess is that they got tired of fixing security problems in SNMP. If so, they could have just restricted its use to the LAN side of the router. But if they really want this product to be the user's primary Internet router they need to add some bandwidth/quota monitoring features to Airport Utility.... that way, they wouldn't have to worry about security problems in the SNMP stack.

Well I put in an enhancement request anywat - not that it will make much difference!

I was serious looking at getting a pair of the new AE-ac's to speed up the link from my Master Airport to my SAN Airport - but losing SNMP is a real downer - so instead I'm looking at PowerLine & an ethernet hookup.

2 sales lost to Apple!

I`m actually able to use windows 5.6.1 utility to configure this new station... The SNMP option is missing which is just plain crazy ! Also anyone else notice you cant edit the radio mode anymore ? In Windows client I still have option, but AC is missing, in MAC utility its missing completely.

The new AE is NOT supported with the windows app for airport utility yet, and the firmware is what is making said app (or any non new app) see it but not modify the snmp functions. The support is and always has been locked in the devices firmware since the developers know we can always hackinitosh our ways back into old applications.

Wow. I am in the market for a new wireless router and I had planned on grabbing a new extreme tomorrow.

Monitoring my router's performance with nagios or other tool is very important to me.

I guess I will have to pick up one of the many other good brand router instead.

C'mon apple, SNMP is an industry standard supported by all of the major and many of the minor manufacturers. Even if you only support v3 read only with authentication. It can't be too difficult for your skilled engineers to compile in snmp support into the firmware.

Hmm, living without SNMP ill be OK in my case, but i found a mad bug with Airport Utility 6.3;

If i try to forward external port 161 to my old linux home server for some monitoring issues - it denys because this port is reserved for SNMP, with a funny footer message;

Use another port - or disable SNMP.

Only a year ago we standardized our offices (about a dozen) on AirPort Extreme because it's an excellent AP which simply works, for the right price, AND has support for SNMP which we use extensively, both for interface monitoring and device inventory.

Now we're gonna have to look at different devices for future roll-outs? And what about our current devices?? Come on Apple!

Not that it's critical at home, but I mess around with SNMP on the home network to see what each of the family members' devices (iPhones, iPads, etc) are doing to our wireless connection and our upstream router; now, I won't be able to no more since I just ran to the Apple store to get the new AE/ac, and I too was scratching my head trying to figure out where the SNMP settings disapeard to, until I saw this thread.

Apple, bring SNMP back!!!

I understand it could be a pain with development of security patches etc so please just make it available on the LAN as a minimum.

I agree.. At the least there needs to be a way to simply see the devices on the network and their current network utilizations.

It is ridiculous to remove snmp monitoring. This eliminates airport for business use. Also for me, it truly ***** because my Indigo smart home system was wired up to detect my iphone and ipad when it comes home, head to the beach or head into the workshop. I love the speed of my new extreme, but without snmp, my house has no clue of my presence and all my hard work is wasted!!!!!! Btw, my iphone 5 screen broke. I drove nearly 3 hours (at Sprint's request) to the nearest apple store to get it replaced. Only to arrive to a d-bag who said I needed to make an apointment to get my screen replaced. Lovely. I told him i was willing to leave the phone and they could just call me whenever it was done ... he demanded that I need to actually BE THERE to replace the screen. So i could make an apointment to come in and drop off my phone 5 hours in the future, but I can't drop it off and return in 5 hours to pick it up repaired. omg how dumb. I didnt argue ... a guy over hearing the ridiculousness pulled me aside and sent me to a third party repairshop - Genius Phone Repair. They took the drop off (of course, duh!!) and called me about 2 hours later when it was done. The price was the same as Apple's repair. I am truly begining to hate you Apple.

What's really stupid about this is that it's still there. Reboot your AE and hit it with something like cfgmaker from the mrtg package and for the first minute or so, the internet IP and such will be there. Then it'll revert and put in a 169.254 address in the field. So they didn't even remove the software, they just gimped it.

Though that might just be because I have an older one that's been updated over the last few years.

I used the data for information purposes at least, but definitely used the internet IP to page myself whenever it changed so that I'd both have my home IP to connect to, but also so I would know and could update my domain DNS info ASAP.

I guess I'll have to go back to a more open router using a linux based firmware again. I loved ddwrt but my netgear at the time finally died so I moved to my AE and have been happy, save the SNMP being turned off.
