I went in tonight to apple store with same problem, power button fails to work. I purchased my phone on November 17, 2012. So warranty is expired but only by a couple months. This is a product defect and Apple should be providing repairs under warranty. The store manager tried to tell me I should have purchased Apple Care.... My response is when you pay $700 for a product the power button should last forever... at least over 4 years. 14 months is a defect. Apple's lack of coverage with this manfacturers defect is irresponsible and very poor customer service. I won't purchase another iPhone that is for sure.
Chris, your logic is so irrelevant & kind of puzzling.
1. I didn't abuse my iphone5 power button here, it has stopped working because of Apple's flawed design. If you actually take the time to look around, you will see that i am not the only one here complaining about this, so you can't point it out as a rare or isolated problem. There are even customers who are so upset to the point they've filed a law suit against Apple.
2. I wasn't saying that Apple should instantly replace my phone but i certainly expect them to fix it or resolve this issue because one would expect that a basic thing such as the power button should not stop working in such a short period. I have the 3 & it's power button is still working perfectly. And yes, there are mamnufacturers who do resolve defects or problems free of charge outside of warranty, one of them was Toyota in 2009 with their gas pedal acceleration problems.
I am not Apple. I don't work for Apple. I'm just relaying information. As far as Apple is concerned, if the device is out of warranty, they will not replace it. You need to take your issue up with them, not here on the forum with me. You've heard the saying, don't shoot the messenger?
I don't know why you think my logic is flawed and irrelevant. It is Apple policy. I don't make it, nor do I have any power to alter it. I'm just telling you what it is.

My iPhone is only 14 monts old (2 monts after warranty) and Power Button works only on left side (yet) - I'm afraid it stops working completely: (The problem started about a week ago: (
It makes me upset. It's an expensive phone but very poor quality.
I think it is a hardware problem - no software I still use IOS 6 and I have this problem too, and people with IOS 7 have the same problem.
I live in Dubai, the phone was purchased on-line directly from apple.com / ae
Does anybody have experience - if repair - replacement flex cable really help?
I Live in South Africa which makes aftersale service even worse. Same problem with the power butten 14 months after purchase. Obviously my last iPhone.
This is a DEFECTIVE button designed and sold by Apple! Perhaps you should read other posts about this faulty button by 100's of iPhone 5 owners.
Warranty?? This should be a recall!
Then take the time to tell Apple that, not me. Feedback to Apple goes to www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate link. Apple does not participate in the forum, this is a user to user forum.
This post worked for me! Took several tries; think i had to do this with phone turned off first:
Guys i think i fixed it:
1-hold down your right side (not working) of the power button until it works
2-while still holding the right side, hold the left (working) with a little pressure too
I tried this for my iphone 5 just out of desperation and it fixed it i dont know if it might do it for you tell me what happens with you!
I found an article online: http://ibnlive.in.com/news/apple-offers-to-replace-faulty-power-button-on-your-i phone-5-for-free/467674-11.html
I don't know if it's true and I cannot find any information on the apple site. Has anyone seen where I can go on the apple site to see if my phone qualifies for the replacement?
Thanks.
I found it! Go here: https://ssl.apple.com/support/iphone5-sleepwakebutton/ and enter your iPhone Serial Number to see if you are eligible for the replacement. Mine was!
