Sony Ericsson m600i - iSync

I have recently gotten my hands on the most perfect phone for me; the Sony Ericsson m600i. UMTS & triband GSM.

However, it does not sync with OS X.

I have managed to get it paired with OS X, as well as getting it recognised with iSync, but when the isync app is being installed on the phone, the phone complains that the app installation script is no longer supported (this is a UIQ3.0 phone).

Please, please help. I am replacing my ipaq 4700 with this phone, but I need the address book and the calendar.

Thank you in advance.

Just to add my voice to the discussion. I've just ordered my upgrade from a V800 to an M600i and am disappointed it won't work with iSync so hopefully this will be fixed soon.

I suppose I'll try the send all contacts via bluetooth or the PC route to initially sync it. My contacts details don't change very often so once I've got the phone loaded it isn't a major issue, just an annoyance that something that has worked so well for ages (iSync and T39, T60, V800 etc) now doesn't.

Cheers

I'm yet to get one of these phones, but was wondering if there is any chance of it exporting / importing calendars to a webdav server? is there even any symbian software that might do this.. I've not really looked very hard so far as I've not had a symbian phone before.

I have seen mention that it uses http to sync, and its all web ready so it shouldn't be impossible?

This way you could import the calender into your ical quite simply.

Why is everybody just focussing on this being Apple's responsibility?

If you buy a third-party printer, scanner, mouse, digital camera, etc. who supplies the software to allow it to talk to your Mac? Apple? No... The manufacturer? Yes!

Why should this be any different for mobile phones?

Sony Ericsson provide the software for their phones to connect to Windows PCs, why not pressure them to do the same for their Mac customers?

Hey Stuntcar,

I feel your pain. You might want to start here:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/isync.html

and let them know what you feel. I have. Like you, I am disappointed in Apple over this matter. At this moment in time, I really could not in good conscience recommend getting a Mac to any of my friends. Apple seems to abandon its faithful followers we when need their support the most.

I sent them this: *** Hey Apple come on. What is so hard about supporting the new Symbian devices. We have moved on from the small offerings that you are supporting.
Take a look:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3270017#3270017

and get a good look at the customers that you are letting down. Read the last entry and see for yourself how you are shooting yourself in the foot. We try to remain faithful but you have to meet us half way.

A very disappointed customer,

Don Trammell

P.S. Fix your iSync site. The drop down box only list up to iSync 1.5. This is nothing less that pitiful.

Good point Jools.

In fact I sent SE a mail asking them about the inability of the M600i to connect to the Mac platform. They responded that they are aware and that they are in contact with Apple regarding this issue but stated that Apple will have to include the drivers in the next OS upgrade. No one is wants to take responsibility it seems. Anyway, I do hope that someone jumps on the stick and just deliver the goods. If a 3rd party vender can just offer the drivers to make the M600i and Mac see each other I would be happy. Some guy on Esato says that his can see it but he must have the Golden Mac because I tested my phone on several Mac's, used different M600i's on my Mac, etc..... and they simply do not see each other nor mount in Finder.

The specific issue that stops the M600, P990 and W950 working with iSync is this:

iSync (over Bluetooth) relies on there being something called "OBEX SyncML Client" and also (the old way) "OBEX IrMC Sync Server" in the phone. Symbian phones do not have this functionality.

Sony Ericssons latest Symbian phones have something called m-router connectivity which is not supported by iSync currently.

For this issue to be resolved in iSync, Apple will first have to add m-router connectivity to iSync. Then third-party manufacturers can add the Phone Plugins to iSync for individual phone models.

There's nothing to stop Sony Ericsson or a clever third-party developer writing a separate application with m-router connectivity built-in. But as iSync is an integral part of the Mac OS, it makes sense to incorporate it into that.

With iSync 2.3 Apple have given handset manufacturers the means to create iSync Phone Plugins for their phones. So, in theory, Sony Ericsson could include a Phone Plugin for iSync in the box with the phone at purchase, and I know that Apple and SE are working towards this.

For Symbian phones, however, Apple first has to add the m-router support to iSync. Who knows how far along, or even if they are working on this?

With Mac OS X 10.4.8 just being released, and 10.5 only a few months away, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a Leopard feature.

I have a SE m600i. Great phone but a pain that it isn't compatable with iSync yet. However, I have just found a way to get my iCal calendars on to my phone. Woo Hoo!

First of all, download:

http://www.mmisoftware.co.uk/downloads/icalmaker.dmg.sit

Export the iCal Calendar you want on your phone to your desktop i.e 'United Fixtures 06/07.ics'. Open iCalMaker and 'Import' that 'United Fixtures 06/07.ics' file from your desktop. Now export that file to a vCal file back to your desktop. Change the that file to 'United Fixtures 06/07.vcs' just by changing the name in the finder to a .vcs file.

Send that file to your phone via bluetooth 'Apple>Shift>B'

Your phone should now import that calendar on to your phone.

Done!

I used a similar method for getting my contacts there. Export a group from AddressBook to a vCard group file (a single .vcf with 90 contacts in I created) and bluetooth that to the phone. All details, including birthday etc excluding photos.

A good start. Would be nice to have synching though 🙂

Cheers

In a recent correspondence with Novamedia, this is what they said about creating a plugin:

"Sorry, but we can't create a plugin at moment. The M600i is a Symbian OS 9.1 phone, so the agents Apple has created for UIQ phones are not compatible, since they are for Symbian 7.0. The M600i refuses to install them. In contrast to Nokia Symbian 9.1 phones the M600i does not support SyncML via Bluetooth-Services. The only synchronisation the M600i supports uses HTTP, so we see no way to support it at the moment. Apple could create a Symbian 9.1 compliant agent, but we have no idea whether they are planning to do so. Perhaps a later firmware version from Sony Ericsson supports SyncML als standardized Bluetooth services, not just as a tunneled IP-Services, which is not accessible from an iSync plugin. Then it should be possible to create a plugin.
