Sony Ericsson m600i - iSync

I have recently gotten my hands on the most perfect phone for me; the Sony Ericsson m600i. UMTS & triband GSM.

However, it does not sync with OS X.

I have managed to get it paired with OS X, as well as getting it recognised with iSync, but when the isync app is being installed on the phone, the phone complains that the app installation script is no longer supported (this is a UIQ3.0 phone).

Please, please help. I am replacing my ipaq 4700 with this phone, but I need the address book and the calendar.

Thank you in advance.

Why is everybody just focussing on this being Apple's
responsibility?

If you buy a third-party printer, scanner, mouse,
digital camera, etc. who supplies the software to
allow it to talk to your Mac? Apple? No... The
manufacturer? Yes!

Why should this be any different for mobile phones?

Sony Ericsson provide the software for their phones
to connect to Windows PCs, why not pressure them to
do the same for their Mac customers?

I see your point, but the fact is that Apple realised that there was zero support for Macs by mobile phone manufacturers and so they developed iSync. At that time they worked closely with Sony Ericsson to ensure good compatibility with their phones (I remember rushing out to buy a T68i as soon as iSync was released).

In an ideal world Sony Ericsson should provide the software but I very much doubt that's going to happen. Besides, I much prefer an Apple driven solution (when they can be bothered, they do a good job). I'm currently relying on Nikons Scanner software - constant crashes - a harsh reminder of what happens when you have to rely on third parties to provide software (if they provide it at all). Nikon Scan hasn't been updated since 2004 despite loads of reports of instability and crashes.

I won´t renew my .mac Membership, too. Apple should
make the update, because they wrote - that they will
be support the mobile phones from SE. I don´t hope
apple wait untill the release of leopard because the
marketing wants one more feature at the new
featurelist.

Certainly worth a thought. Having to use .mac to sync Mac's within the same house (on the same network) is just ridiculous. I'd be willing to not renew out of protest for the slow updates of iSync.

With over 7,000 hits on this subject, you would guess that Apple would notice the cries of many. As an avid fan of Apple + SE, I was totally disappointed with the fact that my brand new, much awaited (7 months1) SE M600i didn't support iSync.

Over the years, I have purchased several iPods, and iBook, a PowerMac, a PowerBook and numerous Airport Express/Base Stations.

A tad disappointed with Apple, and I am sure that they will bring out an update soon.

Ask nicely, and you should get it!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE APPLE PEOPLE, CAN YOU MAKE MY BRAND NEW M600I WORK WITH ISYNC PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Tamer, You wrote:

In a recent correspondence with Novamedia, this is
what they said about creating a plugin:

Can I infer from this that Nokia based Symbian 9.1 phones are more likely to be suitable for synchronising with the Mac?

Thanks!

It's a shame. My M600i is up for sale on eBay. Such a great phone, but no iSync = no good. My Palm TX never lost its role. I say this is SonyEricsson's problem. They made the phone that did not talk to iSync and didn't supply the solution - they could have. Why is it Apple's problem when other phone's have complied with the protocols that are necessary? It does take two to tango, but one of the dancers shouldn't go out on a limb. I will be much more wary next time. Off to buy my Samsung X820 and unsubscribe from this digest!

This is interesting, Marc. I tried to upgrade the firmware a while ago, using XP bootcamp. It didn't work and I didn't try since. But now reading your post seems to explain it. Neither synching nor upgrading work with a Mac - not even using Bootcamp XP. Is this so?

How have you others upgraded your phone's firmware? Using a friend's PC or how does this work?

Hey friends,

i think it is time for us to adress our issue at the apple feedback team. I don´t want to wait any more.

If everybody of us (readers included) posts more than 10 times in the next 48 hours to the isync feedback form (see in the thread). There must be any action from apple. But we should use different Subjects that they can´t filter the inquiries.

I hope, apple will send us a feedback - and it will work...

Oct 21, 2006 6:11 AM in response to Nicolai Landzettel

You would not believe the answers that I received from SE regarding this issue. They blame is squarely on Apple and Mac OS X. They say it is the responsibility of Apple to develop software to make their phones communicate with Mac OS X.

As of today, I am done. My m600i goes on ebay and I am done with SE. I hope they tank and Nokia laughs all the way to the bank. E61 here I come.

If anyone is interested, I will post the email communication between SE and me.

Oct 21, 2006 8:06 AM in response to kalasz

Here are the email contacts. Dated in sequence from first to most recent. These mails prove loud and clear that SE does not know crap about what they are doing, their customer service is less than useless, and why they will always be a "also ran" when it comes to mobiles. I am done with them. The one cool thing about my job is that I get to recommend, approve or disapprove new technology for the military. We were looking at the M600i as a mass purchase for the military. Only about 2200 handset initially, and ramping up to 5000 in the end for high level officers, but guess what. Everyone is now getting Nokia E61's. I recommended that they kill the purchase and work with Nokia. SE lost a fat US military contract. I think it is high time that SE is exposed. If anyone knows of some sites where we can post these responses, please provide them. Clearly Apple is not the bad guy in this case. Apple makes computers (currently) and not phones (not yet) and should in no way be held responsible. While everyone is using standard protocols to transfer OBEX data, SE uses something else that no one is using thus preventing connectivity with iSync.

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Call Centre.

With regards to your enquiry, the mass storage profile on the M600i is supported. Apple are currently working on some drivers for the M600i and P990i to allow this feature to work on MAC PC's. I would imagine the drivers will made available via an update on the MAC OS.

All you need to ensure you do on the M600i, is change the USB mode to File Transfer. To do this, go into Main Menu -> Tools -> Control Panel -> Connections -> USB -> tap the drop down list for USB Functionality, and choose File Transfer. This is incorrect. The USB Mass Storage profile is only supported under Windows.

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Call Centre.

With regards to your enquiry, we apologise for the information that you recieved in the previous email. Unfortunately Sony Ericsson do not support our handset's being used with Apple Mac. This is because it is dependant on iSync supporting the handset. We apologise for any inconvenience that this has caused. This is incorrect because why should Apple be held responsible that their products, which use a standard way to communicate, are compatible with SE products. Should Apple now start writing drivers for HP printers?

Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again for further help and support.

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Call Centre.

With regards to your enquiry, unfortunately, Apple develope their own software. There is nothing Sony Ericsson can do in this matter. We pologise for any inconvenience this has caused, however, in this situation we can only advise you contact www.apple.com/support. They can advise you further. Blame dispersal. Funny how SE develops the phone, changes the way they now communicate, no longer support USB Mass Storage profiles on Mac's, but it is Apple's fault.

Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again for further help and support.

Hello Folks,
i think SE don´t want to support apple and they do not say that they will. I don´t wont any Software from SE, because it will be not as comfortable as Software from Apple seems to be. But i don´t want to sit and wait. I shout out over the isync feedback form, that i will have an update soon. I think over 7000 clicks on these Thread will help, but 70.000 inquiries help, to adress our issue!

I hope everybody will help an fill out this form.

Thanks from Germany

(Sorry for my bad english)

Wie gehts Nicolai,

I used to think that writing would help but it won't SE is not going to help us which is why I am on my way to my local Nokia shop to get an E61. It works with iSync locally, has wifi, and most of all, no headaches.

I did respond to SE by directing them to this site/thread to see if they will respond.

Cheers.

P.S. your english is fine. Viel besser als mein Deutsch.
