After I removed the battery and reset the SMC this way.... When the computer came back to life it said 20hrs until full charge. Did the 'Shift-control-option and power button" all at the same time, computer shuts right down (black screen) and when I powered it back up all was well again. Which makes me super happy as I thought it was going to be an expensive trip to the Apple store!

I have the same problem as Yviane, it seems that my adapter is just not recognised anymore!
I am down to 13%.
I have looked on different posts and tried the Shift-Control-Option power off command, but to no effect. I tried it with the power plugged in and without.
I am scared to try and unplug my battery as it is fully encased with no handy lever.
Should I just try anyway or go into the store?
Please help!

I've also got a Mid 2010, SMC reset didn't work, had to purchase a Y shaped tri-wing screwdriver to remove the battery.

Basically just turn off your laptop, take the back off, lift the battery out and unplug it from the main board. Then hold down the power button for about 10 seconds, once you've done that, reconnect everything, reconnect the charger and turn on the laptop, amber light comes on as normal.

This video shows this method easily: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3tsqjBXXdY
