Can I upgrade from Logic 9 to Logic X?

Hey, I bought Logic Pro about 6 months ago. Is there a way to "upgrade" to Logic X without paying $199?

Logic Pro X, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

I bought Logic Pro 9 on the 11th of July, asked for a refund, but I keep getting a 'NO'.

Now I told them I was not the only one as there are many others on this forum getting refunds.

I said it was not fair, the customers have to be treated equally. I also asked if it was legal to give one person a refund, but don't give it to another one.

Now they sent me an e-mail back, watch this...

Greetings Dieter,

I am sorry to hear of exceptions made for other customers and I extend my sincerest apologies. After consulting with my superiors, we cannot provide a refund for this purchase.

I encourage you to use the iTunes Feedback page to submit any additional comments regarding other matters you were not able to express in your previous email. Apple recognizes that no one is better qualified to provide feedback about iTunes than the people who use it:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

Once more, I offer you our sincerest apologies. I have issued 5 song credits to you iTunes Store account. You can use these to buy the individual songs of your choice from the iTunes Store.

When you next sign in with this account, the song credits will appear by your account name (in the upper-right section of the iTunes Store). The next individual song you buy from the iTunes Store will use one of your song credits instead of your primary form of payment (until all credits have been used). Make sure you click the price to the right of each song name, not the price underneath the album cover.

Please note that song credits cannot be used for purchasing gifts or songs that are listed as "Album Only."

If you don't see your credits, refresh your account information by signing out and back in to the iTunes Store. You can find both "Sign Out" and "Sign In" in the Store menu at the top.

Thank you for being customer valued iTunes Store and Apple customer.

Sincerely,

José R.C.

Ain't this another ugly trick to calm me down!

This is really unprofessional from Apple!

graham,

I think any reasonable person here at last, would agree that if you bought Logic 9, 30 days or less from the release date for LPX then you should get a refund... I don't see anyone arguing with this point.. and you have our support for what that is worth.

However, complaining about it here.. when it has been made clear repeatedly, what you need to do...doesn't achieve anything.. which is the point Erik, myself and others are making...other than such complains takes up space in the forum.. and are simply a waste of your time and ours...

Complaints made directly to Apple Support via email or preferably phone calls.. provide the only chance of this situation being rectified successfully in your favour.... as others have reported .. and complaining here simply does not achieve this aim.

Please read this for further clarification

Somehow I think this is going to be a subject of common discussion among users at the next AES show in October.....

I am surprised they made no mention at the WWDC of an upcomming update to Logic Pro but they announced an upcomming update to Final Cut Pro..... And then no mention at Summer NAMM, they weren't even there. Not that they are ever at a NAMM show.

But an announcement to the Audio community would have been nice....

Maybe a point of consideratoin for Apple.... Come to the NAMM and AES conventions!

Hi Dieter

I agree with you. They can't give some people refunds and not others. It has to be equal across the board. Apple had no right to take your money 5 days before. This is most shocking they knew they were releasing the software and there is something very perverse in their way if thinking it is ok to treat clients like this

If Tim Cook was to buy a Ferrari at $500000 and the day he got it he was told there was a better model out the next day with better features at the same price he would be really p****** off

Well that's about the equivalent of his purchase with his salary to mine

We are just the little people and Apple think they can treat us as thou wilt

Bad Apple

5 tunes as an insulting freebie which you can only buy as an album. Tell them where to put their 5 tunes

Am I the only one getting pretty fed up with all this whining? It is beginning to get more than annoying, that a site usually filled with people explaining functions or techniques, now it is dominated by all these whiners "i wanna tsjeep upgrate!" Newsflash: the price of Logic is now what used to be the upgrade price, so, nothing has changed - apart for first time buyers, who do not pay $ 999, and they do not pay $ 499, they only pay $ 199.

So please Apple discussion moderators, create a temp forum for eh, consumer-complaint posts, so we can get back to making music and helping others make it.

Hi Erik

I appreciate you seeing my post as an annoyance and I understand that guys like you have paid $1000 dollars in the past for this software and yes as a first time buyer you see me as getting this software cheap or at upgrade price.

Just to let you know I am a first time buyer purchasing this for my 14 year old son who is stepping up from garage band and so the price of £139 is serious money to him. That type of money does not frighten me as I spend many thousands every year on Apple products.

I was only trying to make one point regardless of the price of the software and that was 'Why would Apple sell an old product to customers and really p*** them off knowing that they are bringing out an upgrade within a few days'

It's not about the money. It's about the inconsistency Apple have dished out since - some getting money back, a policy of no one getting money back, some getting gifts of iTunes tokens whilst others like myself being offered nothing. That is the unfairness of the story but also as the software is only a download what harm is it if Apple just kills my two week old version 9 and allows me the Version 10 download. It costs them nothing but makes a client happy.

Your mention of us coming on and whinning whilst you want to make music. I went through the appropriate Apple Channels and had to talk for 40 mins on an international call from Scotland to America It was the Apple support team who told me they also thought that me not getting an upgrade was unfair and told me to reply on the feedback and forums. I also didn't ask you to comment on my whinning as I had basically answered someone else making a similar complaint.

As this is a forum for Logic I feel entitled to have my say just like you did. Freedom of speech for all etc....

I'm the one who started this thread with a question. I just would have thought that SOME reduced price for people who had an earlier version was such a normal thing that I thought I'd better ask to see why I couldn't find the link to it anywhere... only to find that others were already annoyed at this.

I was first excited about the new product, then surprised when no upgrade was possible, then annoyed. I guess I now sort of understand the approach so I'll quit any whining, but it doesn't mean I like it, and the bottom line is that I am a whole lot less excited about the new product. I'm definitely not gonna buy now. I am worried though that some goofy OS update is going to wipe out Logic 9 after a while. Is that a reasonable fear? Does it have to work like that?

I don't know if I paid for the call or not? I called the UK They put me through to the USA I have no idea who paid for the call. It's irrelevant as the costs of calls are pretty low wherever you call these days. It's the 40 mins of my time I can't get back wasted on a call that if Apple had a proper fixed policy in place I wouldn't be put in this position. ANyway I thought you guys wanted to make music and not listen to whiners - so that's my last word in your forum un the subject - you however can talk about it as long as you want ;0)

All this whining about whining is just whining, if you ask me 😀 . I've been using this stuff since it was called Creator, back in what... '93? I ran that on a IICi (from memory: 35mHz bus and 45mb hard drive). I'm a professional and yes, I bought all the new versions of Logic over the years and paid for various upgrades etc. and had been using Logic Pro 7 until a couple of months ago, when I decided to finally upgrade.

I bought and downloaded Logic 9 on 21st June. Imagine my surprise when, a mere three weeks later, Apple announces Logic X. Imagine my further surprise when, having spoken to Apple, it turns out Logic X is not an upgrade at all - it's a version. The support people could only offer sympathy and agreed it was, indeed, very bad luck. They could not offer me a free crossgrade and yes, if I wanted Logic X I would have to buy the thing from scratch. I guess the computer simply said "no".

I don't care whether this is your first version of "Logic" or, as in my case, the umpteenth. I have as much sympathy with - and feel as much anger as - those who may have bought it recently for the first time. It's the sheer bad manners and arrogance which I find galling. It's also stupid, too, because all these little tiny bits add up to a reputation. Having been a staunch advocate and defender of Apple all these years, I don't think I could defend them any longer. I'll continue using their products because it's a platform I'm familiar with and frankly I can't be bothered to learn a new one. However from now on, if anyone asks, I will happily and gleefully not recommend either Apple, nor their products and certainly not their customer relations policies.
