Can't get Godaddy outgoing server to work in Mail - OK in Outlook

No matter what I try, I just cannot get the Godaddy outgoing server to work in Mail, but it works OK in Outlook for Mac which I don't really want to use if I can avoid it.

I've tried all my 3 accounts and none of them work with sending. All Ok receiving.

Tried smtpout.secureserver.net with and without SSL, and with all sorts of ports 80, 3535, etc.

Nothing works.

Can anyone suggest any solution or more in depth troubleshooting methods. I feel it's some security issue which Outlook seems to have more settings for.

Thanks.

After several discussions with GoDaddy essentially they were pointing the finger at Apple for this issue. All it did was this:

Launch Apple Mail, open Preferences. Click on Accounts. Click the Advanced tab for the selected mail account.

Uncheck the "Automatically detect and maintain account settings."

After that all has been well.

Hope it helps.

I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER

You need to change your password on the go daddy website then re do your account on your iphone, ipad etc..

Dear iplshop: Thankk you...Pretty much what you shared above worked for me....I was on with tech support for godaddy (my email host), and they had me reset my password in my godaddy account, then change it in my setting on my iphone 5s, and whalah! Thank goodness!

Hi Joscelyn80

Just got an email from the Apple Support Community with your problem showing. Not sure how that happened since I haven't been anywhere near this discussion. But...

Since I did read your post, I see one problem: your incoming server port of 993. I've been with GoDaddy for years, and the port has always been 995. So you might want to try that. I've also used 110 with success sometimes. Actually if I'm not mistaken these settings are also true with other companies, not just GoDaddy. I might also add that this is for POP mail settings, so make sure of that too. Note: it's also smart to try the SSL box both checked and unchecked. Seems sometimes it works one way and other times another. Hope this helps out.

Lastly, I can only say as someone who has used macs from almost day one in the 1980's, I'm an advertising art director, that this email problem has been an ongoing Apple Mail issue that I've encountered many many times unfortunately. And with many different problems. And there were times that I just said the heck with it, and used another email program. Some I like a lot better that Apple Mail.

Hi there. I feel for you. I struggled for days. This might sound dumb, and I am sure you did it, but just double checking.

1. You reset your godaddy email password (not your godaddy.com account password) right?

2. Did you reset your email password from the godaddy.com website, or did you do it in webmail? I did mine on the godaddy.com site (my account, manage domains).

3. After you reset your godaddy email password from godaddy.com, did you go back into your phone and change the password for both the in and out servers? That's what I did.

4. Oh, also, we turned SSL off, entered the new password, tried to get emails and it failed.

5. Then we went back into mail settings on my iphone and turned SSL back ON, then entered the new godaddy email passwords, and then it worked.

I know this is crazy...this is so unacceptable that people have to go through this craziness.

Good luck.

To both Joscelyn80 and shoeluvr and anyone else having Apple Mail/GoDaddy problems:

I gave a little advice to Joscelyn80 on her email problem. I suggested to switch from 993 to 995 on her incoming mail server port. What I didn't go in to was that 993 is for an IMAP account and 995 is for a POP account. I just assumed Joscelyn80's account was a POP account, as most individual accounts are. Not sure if it all worked out for her or not because I didn't hear back from Joscelyn80. I only mention all this because it has to do with the real problem with email: POP or IMAP?

You have 2 choices when using email: POP and IMAP.

POP is the original "protocol" or way of using email. It was created first. You purchase a domain name from a company and you usually get a free POP email account along with it. IMAP, on the other hand, was created later on and uses a different "protocol" for how email works. To get an IMAP account you usually have to pay extra.

I mentioned in my post to Joscelyn80 that I was "with GoDaddy." Well actually that isn't exactly true. Because I "used to be" with GoDaddy. After almost 15 years with them, I finally got rid of them about a year ago. With another more Mac friendly company now. The reason: not only because of all the hassles I've had with email over the years using my GoDaddy POP account, but finally and mainly, the reason I switched is when I had a candid conversation with one of the more open GoDaddy reps on the phone.

Briefly here's the story:

The GoDaddy rep told me that if you have a POP account with them, I should know that GoDaddy has essentially stopped dealing with these kinds of accounts for years now. They haven't updated any new data to their servers that might help with the problems these accounts seem to have. (Note: this conversation occurred about a year ago.) And POP email problems seem to really affect the Apple Mail program the most. The rep then went on to say that if I really didn't want any issues anymore to open an IMAP account with them. Of course, that would cost extra!!! And the rep continued to say, as has been often repeated on the internet so I've discovered, if in doubt, go with IMAP, it’s the more modern protocol. Hummmm.

So I had 2 options according to the GoDaddy rep: keep my POP account with them, with all the related problems between GoDaddy/Apple Mail; or switch to an IMAP account, the better option, costing extra, more money for GoDaddy, and not have these problems (maybe?).

Bottom line:

After thinking about it, I came up with a 3rd option the Godaddy rep didn't give me: I dropped GoDaddy entirely! I got rid of my email problems, I got rid of all the extra GoDaddy fees that they always seem to add on (I had a hosting account with them too), and I've had a smooth POP email account(s) running on Apple Mail for over a year now! With another company!

So my conclusion to all this is simple: the real program with the Apple Mail/GoDaddy email issues is GoDaddy!!!

Now I may be wrong on this. But after years of dealing with all the many different email problems I've had, after leaving GoDaddy for over a year now, I've had non!!!

GoDaddy works in Outlook.can receive and send email. Talked with GoDaddy helpline which was no help. based on suggestions from this site, changed godaddy pw and it still works on the internet GD site.

I have both a mini ipad and iPhone 6. They have the same software OS 9.1 (haven't uploaded 9.2 yet). I have never had any problem on either receiving email with setting 993 with SSL

Now my out settings on the mini are 80 without SSL and it will send email for that account. out mail on IPhone still does not. send out email. Have tried every version of 80, 3535, 25, 465, 587 with and without SSL.

Even GD said if it works on one it will work on the other...wrong!

texasfire's suggestion fixed it for me, changing the TLS cert from none to com.apple....

The problem i was experiencing:

smtpout.secureserver.net was working fine with same and other user accounts on different devices, a win7 pc, iphone 6 and a blackberry classic but on a mbp it was saying offline and that it couldnt connect to the server. Even had the same result with the connection doctor that the OP had. Pretty sure this problem started after mbp owner upgraded to El Capitan the other day, but was brought to my attention today. They had no problems before upgrading.

After changing the TLS cert and setting to a non-ssl port (25) mails started sending no probs. Shut down the system and opened it back up and tried to send and got the error again. Went into the settings and the TLS was set to none again. Set it back, closed the mail app, opened it, check, its still set this time. Shut down system, opened Mail back up and it is set to TLS still, test emails sent successfully. Problem solved, i hope. MBP owner does not have the gumption to go through those steps every time OSX decides to revert back to no TLS for what ever reason.

So there appears to be a couple of problems with El Capitans mail app, one of them appears to be that it doesnt remember stuff when you select it or is for some reason going back to a default i cant change, and it is clearly effin up peoples smtp settings. i read about people experiencing the same exact thing with gmail and icloud email after upgrading to el capitan, so i do not think go daddy is at fault here. Maybe there is some setting on their end thats causing this but im putting the blame on apple.

Thanks texasfire. All the steps i went through, changing the TLS is one i wouldnt have guessed as im not exactly sure what it even is.

I've been experiencing this off and on for years. It's been behaving properly on my home system for a good six months this time, but when I upgraded my work machine to El Capitan this is now a daily occurrence - around 3-4 times a day (plus I had to switch "download attadchments" off and back on for all IMAP accounts because of a "null" mailbox alert. (I'm not a fan of El Capitan).

The only thing that works for me is to quit Mail and relaunch it.

This has nothing to do with the settings in Mail. It is GoDaddy's mail server. They suggest using their MS mail option (which gets it out of GoDaddy's hair).

All of these months (and years) of elaborate testing and opinions going on and on, and it all comes down to one inescapable truth: GoDaddy's email servers and Apple's Mail program are a bad fit. I've been through countless iterations of tech and customer support, upgrades (through multiple OSX versions) and GoDaddy's claims of having overhauled their problems.

- Apple Mail does NOT properly synchronize InBox or other mailboxes stored on GoDaddy's email servers per any pre-set schedule. One has to take the account offline, take it back online, then hit Check Mail again - and the boxes will synchronize

- GoDaddy's SMTP server - smtpoutsecureserver.net - simply fails, often, at establishing a connection with outgoing Apple Mail messages.

Folks, you can try all you want, remove prefs, delete and reset accounts, heck you can even re-set PRAM! - hopefully, you won't have to come to the same conclusion I have come to - that, regardless of who is at fault (both companies have assured me it is the others' fault, repeatedly) - I have to migrate my business email servers, gulp - much as I hate to do it - to Gmail...
