This happened to me also. I updated to iTunes 11.1 and when I plug in my iPhone 5 (still using iOS 6.x), iTunes doesn't see it. However, my computer does see the iPhone and shows the folder with all my photos, etc.

for those who couldn't fix the issue by following davidsh_seattle's instruction: (especially on Windows 8)

Make sure your device is PLUGGED IN

Go to device manager

Expend Universal Serial Bus controllers

Right Click on SimpleCore USB Driver (or SimpleCore Device USB Driver)

(the rest of my instruction is copied from davidsh_seattle's post.)

  • Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
  • Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
  • Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
  • In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
  • Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
  • Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
  • Select Apple Mobile Device USB Driver from the list
  • Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
  • Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.

Hope this helps.

And what about this error, after "usbaapl64" Select, OK and Next? :|

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

Please, guys, heeeelp!!! 😠 😟

try this:

unplug the device

opne device manager

make it full screen to see all devices at once

expend Universal Serial Bus Controllers

While watching the screen plug the device

See what will be added under Universal Serial Bus Controllers

for Windows 8 that will be SimpleCore Device USB Driver (or SimplyCore). That may be different in Windows 7.

If you only see Apple Mobile Device USB Driver then you better follow davidsh's instructions.

okay, how about this:

unplug the device

open device manager

go to View Menu and select Show Hidden Devices

Expend Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Uninstall all APPLE related devices by right click on them one by one and select Uninstall

When I did this there were more then 20 of them. So uninstall all

Expend other device categories to see if there is any APPLE related hidden device there. If there is then uninstall them.

After all:

Untick the Show Hidden Devices from View menu

Follow my previous instruction about watching the screen and plugging the device.
