iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

For me at least (another soul who listens to audiobooks on his iDevices on a daily basis) though still being able to use chapters period is appreciated, albeit less convenient than it used to be, the main issue is that books are now near impossible to navigate within chapters. As someone who primarily listens to books before bed, this feature is essential to finding my place the next night. Now something that used to take a matter of seconds has become several minutes of repeatedly mashing of the 15-second buttons.

The whole point of chaptering an audiobook in the first place is to have the whole thing in one file — however this means one file may be twenty hours in length or more. Scrubbing a three-to-eight minute song with a bar two inches long is one thing, but a twenty-hour audio book? It's nowhere near precise enough. Yes, I appreciate still having chapters period, but the real benefit — to me at least — was, not only could you chose to start on any chapter you wanted, with them you got an individual bar you could scrub through for that chapter if you needed to find a specific part. Further, the absence of chapters means no more chapter art for books that have it (take, for example, the Harry Potter series).

With this one update, my iPhone went from one of the best/most thoughtfully designed ways of listening to audiobooks to one of the worst. I'd like to believe this was a simple oversight, but I imagine instead they erroneously assumed that no one cared about these features and that they needlessly complicated things. I guess it's up to us to make sure they know how much we care.

Have had a reply from Apple.

Regretting I have the problem

Thanking me fot letting them know that others are having this problem

There are working towards a solution

Will email when it is sorted.

How more bland can one get.

But someone in now aware of our problem. If it will be fixed, I wonder.

Reminds me of the batter problem on some Mac Book Pro. That is still not resolved

I dunno, IMHO ..that's a pretty good response.

It's really all they can say in this case. I'd probably say this...

Dear Thinman,

Thank-you for your email. We appreciate the time you took to let us know about this issue.

The engineers are reviewing the situation and we'll contact you when there is resolution.

Best,

Me

You can't over promise... you can't say when it's going to be fixed until you can see the ramifications, etc...

All you can do is acknowledge the email, promise to look into it, and say they'll let you know when there's more info.

...but I'm like you, I'm thinking... "PLEASE FIX IT FAST!"

Have a great weekend, thanks for the update. It's nice to know.

Hi Mike,

Keshia here from the iTunes Store. Thanks for taking the time to write back in, and I apologize for the misunderstanding. I now see that the functionality option you had with audiobooks in iOS 6 is not available in iOS 7Thank you for reporting this matter, and for letting me know that there are other customers also having the same problem.

Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.

Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible.

Sincerely,

Keshia

For those who may not already be aware, you can change the scrubbing speed to make it more precise. Press and hold the timer bar, then slowly drag your finger up. You will see the screen change from "Hi-Speed Scrubbing" to "Half-Speed," then as you continue to drag up, "Quarter-Speed" and "Fine Speed."

It's a far cry from navigating within a chapter and still viewing chapters, but it might be a little helpful to those just trying to jump back a few minutes.

I'm amazed that it actually got worse!

It's bad enough that it wont save the place in an audiobook but having to scrub through the WHOLE book to find where I was is so so frustrating, It's even hard to use that tiny bar to get close to where i was.

Bottom line it is just not something I should need to do, chapters are better than nothing but a bookmark would be ideal for me.

I think I'm going to have to look for another place to get and listen to my audiobooks. I hate to give up on apple but I was really hoping that the i0s7 update would make listening to audiobooks easier not harder.

As a frequent user of Audible books let me add my voice to those complaining about the lose of the Audible books Chapter feature. It's the one really annoying aspect of the otherwise useful iOS7 update. I can use the Audible app (in fact I now have no choice) but the download is much less convenient for me.

I am literally begging you to put this feature back.

The only work around I have is for the books I purchased through Audible.com If I use the Audible app on my iPhone I can see the chapters. But, it can't see the chapters in the iTunes version of the book. In the Audible App I have to download a second copy to the device in order to see the chapters. I don't like having to download a second copy, but if I have to use the Audible app to see the chapters, then that's how I use my audiobooks on my iPhone from now on.
