iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

I've learned quite a bit from this thread:

1. Chapters are visible and accessible, albiet not randomly and not in a list -- but it is possible to step through chapters one by one and see the chapter title by using the double-arrow buttons.

2. Finding one's place within a chapter is possible using the slow scrubbing feature -- press and hold on the scrub bar and bring you finger up the screen to slow the speed of scrubbing. The length of the chapter doesn't show, but it is easy to move within a chapter for seconds, minutes, or longer with good control.

3. There is little reason not to show a chapter list and chapter progress bar -- the page for it exists so why not use it. Also, why not include looping.

It's more like moving the track numbers and names of music albums and not having a particularly better way of accessing them -- needs improvement most certainly, but fully using the controls -- as I've learned from others in this thread -- makes audio books accesible.

I listen to audiobooks all the time and listening to my audiobooks with the new IOS7 is extremely frustrating. First of all it does not remain on pause and it goes back to the beginnng. This was also a problem with the IOS6, however at least in IOS6 I could very easily find the chapter I was on and slide the round button where the number of minutes was showing to the exact spot where I left off. Unfortunately Apple has made finding where I left off incredibly dificult and frustrating. I was hoping that Apple would have fixed the music app so audiobooks would stay on pause no matter what but unfortunately they didn't. Finding my place in my audiobooks is now an exercise in frustration!!!!

I am as unhappy as the rest of you but I did a reset before checking in with the groups. The audiobook option is not listed under More. The audiobooks that have been copied are not available at all. It is no longer a problem with missing chapters but the entire book. I have 1266 books and I have them organized so that I could find and listen to them in an order I like after all a good book can be enjoyed more than once. If this is not fixed soon it will make me switch to other products. I would hate to leave Apple but I am addicted to my audiobooks.

Thank goodness I found this thread before upgrading to IOS7. I was going to get a new iphone but that will have to wait until this is fixed. IOS6 had some quirks in this area but looks like IOS7 won't even work for my style of listening to Audiobooks as many of you have pointed out.

Apple has stressed to me the importance of sending feedback at

http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Apple emplyees say this is the only way to get our concerns to Apple.

Please everyone send Feedback to Apple so they can fix this.

I just wrote this to Apple Feedback. This is a strage un enhancement--very disappointing.

I am an avid lister of audio books from Audible. When a book is 15 hours + is is important to me to see the chapters and keep track of where I left off...as it has been in past software versions. Please reinstate this feature. For some time now, when I place the phone down or it is bumped in my shirt pocket, the book--or-music--will play all by itself. That is bad in itself, but at least with chapters available, I've had a better chance of remembering where I am at in the book.

Counting on your understanding and help here.

Thank you!

I agree, it was great before, they ruined it. I also notice when i put the phone down, I lose the picture of the book and it shows me black squares on an angle all over the screen with song titles, til it tuns the light of the screen off. They really messed it up. I was trying to post a comment, but I cant seem to add a comment. Thank you so much for showing us what we all want back. I told costumer support about it the first day, while trying to get the calendar to work.

Not only did IOS7 remove chapters, I keep getting a screen that shows the audio book cover for about 15 seconds, and then goes to black squares with my music groups in it. It doesnt give me anyway to turn off book, or do anything, other than scroll through music when I am trying to listen to a book. It wasnt broken, they fixed it, now its broken. I sure hope they fix it.

The calendars show the month, but if you tap a day, it changes to hourly, so you dont see your event unless its in the same time frame. Again, wasnt broken til they fixed it.

Wake up Apple, fix the mess you created.

The longer I use iOS 7 with audiobooks, the more frustrating it becomes. In addition to the removal of chapters (at least to view individually), I'm struggling to stream books to Apple TV with Airplay. Some books won't stream at all, others take as long as 30 seconds to start up. On at least one book I hit the 15 second back button and the book started over. I was 5 hours in and now I had to scrub back to where I was (through the entire book, of course, since I can no longer scrub through chapters). And now another book is skipping backwards to the same spot over and over. I'll be listening, the audio becomes jumbled, then jumps back. I tried scrubbing forward as much as 10 minutes (because hey, who needs to listen to the whole book) and after a few seconds, it skipped back again.

I love you Apple, I never complain, but I've never dealt with glitches like this. I'm on my third feedback report for this.

I agree this is a step backwards. I use an iPod nano at night and going back and forth from the nano to the phone is a pain as they now display the books differently. I don't always sync them and often I've found that syncing doesn't end you up at the same place. iOS 7 on the iPad does display chapters and the scrubber displays time for the current chapter so they got it right for the iPad, why not for the iPhone?

Just to add to what I hope Apple will view as a deluge - removing chapters has made listening to audiobooks - something i use my iPhone for, more than anything else, a very dissatifying experience. Bring them back please!

A less important point in the grand scheme of things but important now with the chapter screwup is that it would be nice if the buttons incrementing (currently 15 sec) could be user configurable - moving the slider with anything remotely like sensitivity is impossible for the typical 10 hr book.

Will give it a few days and then try to go to iOS6!

I have an Audible membership. After coming upon this thread I was shocked, as I had not yet tried to listen to my newest audiobook. This is horrible, a downgrade, not an upgrade!

For Audible customers there is a "save". Use the Audible app. I used to think it was inferior to iTunes, but having just checked it out again find it far superior to iTunes under iOS 7. Guess there will be no further question of where I will buy future audiobooks from, unless Apple fixes iTunes.

I now have a very long list of complaints/concerns/requests I am compiling as I work through the mess that is iOS 7. I will be sending it to Apple, for sure, and hope all of us disillusioned Apple devotees do the same.

Apple lost three iPhone 5x upgrades from my family this week, even though for two members it would have been free with trade ins from Verizon. This does not bode well for Apple. Yeah, yeah, I know we hear that a lot and it never happens, but this seems to be the worst snafu since iOS 5 made doorstops of many of our iPad 1's.
