How do I limit the number of emails displayed in iOS 7?

I prefer to display only 100 emails from each of my mailboxes on my apple devices, but with iOS 7 it's showing all my emails, and there doesn't seem to be an option to limit this in settings as there was previously?

To my own reply: it worked for a while but, then the emails returned a bit less but they are still huge. I went from 22,340 to 19,xxx. So I think this is an Apple iOS7 thing that has to be addressed. I already sent a notice to Applecare and hope they come up with some fix and bring back the limit on emails as it used to be in iOS6.

I sent an email feedback yesterday but no acknowledgment. Besides the email issue I hate what they did with Safari. The page is blah and looks like an amateur design. Tiny print. Font on keyboard and other places way too light and not enough contrast. Some symbols are so light you can hardly see with good light and forget in sunlight.

I started looking at Android phones today. Some very nice looking, well designed options. I can update now but will give Apple a few weeks to see what they have to say on the feedback they are getting. I think they like to listen to those that think Apple walks on water rather than those that have constructive feedback.

This is so STUPID!! Can Apple please explain which design philosophy suggests that users must not limit the number of emails they have on their phone. Didn't anyone complain about this during the beta?! ***!!

And for those of you who think there is a "fix" for Hotmail, sounds like you were using POP3 for hotmail on iOS6. POP3 only downloads emails for an account, but doesn't sync back to the web. Hotmail/Outlook offered Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync on iOS6 as well - you just seemed to have discovered it now because ActiveSync for Outlook is included in the 'add email account' list.

I plan to turn off yahoo mail on the mail app and try out Yahoo's email application until Apple fixes this.

KIND OF FIX.... it's as good as it gets I think. If you open the mail app and click on edit, you are given the option to add unread folder, all draft and all trash. I added the unread folder and select all. I still have 2000+ emails but it doesn't show on the home screen with a stupid red bubble and a number staring back at me. I can live with that

I'm thinking of switching to another phone brand as we'll. I'm still with the 4s and I want a bigger screen. Despite the 5/5s screen being technically larger, I don't consider this to be an answer to the truly larger screens on competitor phones. iOS7 also seems very glitchy - keyboard is less responsive/accurate, app update problems, and now this mail issue! I switched to Apple two phones ago because things just worked - intuitively, automatically. It seems like Apple is becoming the new Microsoft. Disappointing. Also, it took ~10 min to type this because the keyboard on iPad is so bad. Sometimes the delete key seems to lock and wipes out half a line. Literally almost unusable. I guess I may be looking at another brand of tablet too.

The problem can be cleared if you go onto your computer(not the iOS device) and mark as read all your

emails that you never opened. It should clear on your linked iOS device. The emails have always been there but was hidden due to the recently removed feature that allows you to display only the chosen number of emails. I do not advice turning of the alerts and icon badges in the notification center because you will not receive anymore notifications when you have emails

FAKE FIXES do not SOLVE the problem.

I am sorry but telling everyone to do little tricks so you don't see a large COUNT of unread is not a fix.

I have AOL. It brings back in i0S 7 all my READ email and my 7 unread. If I put the READ in folders - delete AOL from my iphone, re add. then it is true only my 7 unread will be there, but as soon as I open a folder for an old saved email it brings back ALL emails!!! This use to be limited to 50. So after opening a folder I have to do the delete and re-add. THIS IS NOT A FIX

So doing all these little tricks just so you don't have to see a COUNT that is high is not removing them from your phone and using up space on your phone!

APPLE SUPPORT told me

  • Sorry they removed that feature
  • You can not swap back to IOS6
  • only option is to write to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ lodging a complaint under Iphone or Ipad and request for this feature to be returned.
  • Complaining here without taking action at the above link serves no purpose. Please tell APPLE your desire at the feedback link

Please understand they need to hear your request and outrage directly in the proper place if they are going to get with it and change it back.

Also, be responsible, when offering the tips and tricks that you find to "DEAL" with this issue until it is resolved or not, by encouraging feedback at the Apple feedback link.

I submitted feedback for every device impacted by this which is 4. I have so much invested in Apple and apps that I would hate to have to switch to Android but I started looking at the phones yesterday and the screen designs are impressive. It really made Apple's look amateurish. Prior to this version I thought Apple was very intuitive. Now you never know what things are due to lack of labeling. Sometime you swipe left, sometime right or up or down. And sometimes you hold your finger on something for options to come up.

This is the first thing that finally worked for me to get rid of phantom unread email (on my iphone, tap on edit, then for all: mark as read/mark as unread). I had to do it two or three times though. Maybe I wasn't waiting long enough for it to update the first time or two.... Thanks for posting, @cory from il! I now have zero unread emails on my iphone and ipad with ios7. 🙂

I found a temporary solution that works for myself (for the time being, while waiting Apple to hear our loud complains and to restore the loved feature):

On the server (via web-mail access and not on the iPhone):

I created a sub-folder to my Inbox,

named it "Inbox Archive",

moved there all the emails older then a month.

The logic is that the iPhone sync only the content of the Inbox itself.

In the meantime, all my emails, which I do not want to delete, are still there, stored in a sub-folder,

so an eventual search demand in future will simply have to "include sub-folders content".

The above refers to my POP account.

Not sure if sync with IMAP account would work same way (still did not test my gmail)
