I've contacted Apple following this link http://www.apple.com/support/contact/, follow the steps. If your Care Plan has expired click on Exception -> IOS7.

It seems my iPhone 4s had a hardware issue with the WIFI chip. Apple replaced my iPhone without costs and mine had no warranty!

Hope it helps!

I am in Canada. iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2.

Experienced the same greyed wifi issue since update.

My phone is out of warranty by more than half a year.

Followed instruction from Apple's knowledge base, all the tricks explained here and in other threads, except the dryer/freezer ones.

Sometimes, immediatly after applying a fix, wifi/bluetooth became enabled, but never more than half an hour.

Yesterday, Oct 5, I followed user Tommeucanyellas recommandation, quoted here.

I chose the right Country, and clicked the following:

iPhone > Service request & Troubleshooting > Restore or update not working as expected.

Then I entered my serial number. Then choose iOS 7 in the next menu.

I chose to schedule a call. The phone rang at the exact scheduled time. Spoke to a first nice and polite representative who asked if I tried the workarounds explained on the Apple knowledge base, as well as backup/restore and reset network settings. Then I've been put on hold for a couple of minutes. When she came back, she transferred me to a senior representative.

The senior representative acknowledged the situation and apologied. Without me asking anything yet, he offered me to make an exception, a free replacement.

To get the new phone, he proposed to

-go to an apple store (this is a 3 hours drive for me)

-I send my phone, when they get it the send a new one.

-They charge my CC, send me a phone, then I have 10 days to send them the faulty one with the box I received my new phone in. Then they undo the CC billing.

I chose the last option of course.

The same day the new phone left the warehouse in PA and is scheduled to arrive at my place by tuesday.

At the end of the conversation I asked if he was aware of the technical issue. He couldnt tell me, but said that was a known issue and some customers were experiencing this.

I must admit I've been pleasantly surprised about the outcome of this issue.

For those not having luck at an AppleStore, I suggest you try this.

Thanks to Tommeucanyellas for bringing this solution out.

Apparently Apple has been busy removing negative posts. Hey, dear (=expensive) Apple, don't blame the mirror if your face is ugly! They say on a different thread there was a link to a site where people started to collect info on affected users to measure the extent of the problem - and that link was also removed. Anybody can post the link again? Mood: belligerent and recalcitrant, NOT a happy Apple user! 😠

I have a 4S and also upgraded to the ios 7 on Sept 20, totally lost wifi. Took plone to Apple store for help, spent 2 1/2 hours there, 3 techs tried to help. One was too busy texing her husband!

They tried everything (I think) could not fix. Said it was my phone, so why did I have wifi minutes before doing the upgrade?

Spent another hour with Apple (over phone) she could not help.

So what the h... I do not have $199.00 at this moment for another phone - maybe I should just throw it in the toilet...

My girl friend is using iPhone 4s, we are in Japan. She just update to ios7 for several days, the wifi became grated out and can not use. She has used for one year and a half, so it is out of warranty, the Apple care said I need to pay 27000Yen to have a replacement. It is about $270, i think it is not our responsibility. We are waiting for the update to solve this problem, if possible.

Apple, what do you think of this issue for so many devices when update to ios7 ???

Oct 12, 2013 8:04 AM in response to Hauyu

my understanding is that the update to the OS has caused a malfunction with the hardware which has then damaged the wifi chip and hence, cannot be repaired with a software update!

we have been asking for a response for a while and no response!

there are several fixes that you can try and hopefully it solves your problem but many 4s have been permanently damaged

have a read of the several threads on the subject

same here; worked perfectly for 18 months and within several days after update, wifi/Bluetooth dead

tried switch off/on, re-boot, restore, phone restore and set up as new phone, re-set network settings, re-set all settings, fridge, hairdryer etc. etc.

Apple aren't listening, but are watching and deleting certain posts they don't like

I think if someone technical can let us know what needs to be replaced in the phone we can then assess whether to repair or go to Apple shop and let them clean out your wallet!

Well, this is a forum, huh? In Russia the speaker of the lower house of parliament (the State Duma) once said: "Parliament is not a place for discussions"... I have a useless iPhone, and instead of answering my question (How do I make it work again?), the manufacturer's moderators censor me for posting a link to a blog where people FREELY discuss this debacle - and the reason is, get this: "Please do not include links in your post or signature that do not directly answer a user's question." Time to nominate these spin doctors for the Ignoble Prize... :-)

I am having the same issue. I just upgraded my 4s to iOS 7 and now my Wifi/Bluetooth aren't working. I talked to tech support and followed all of their instructions. I also tried many of the things people are saying worked for them in this forum, but still no luck. I finally restored to a new cell phone and tried several several things to get it working with a clean install. Guess what, now I can't even install anything because my **** Wifi won't work. I just upgraded my ipad 1 to the new gen ipad and I've had earlier iphones, but this is making me want to walk away and return the ipad I just purchased.

I mean seriously, we are just screwed?

Just another thought that gives me hope that maybe the big carriers maybe applying pressure to Apple to resolve the problem. I had a communication from T-Mobile in Hungary clsoing (my translation):

"I trust that Apple will soon rectify the mistake and to the extent that I get further information about this, I will of course keep you informed"

It seems to me that iOS 7 has exposed a weakness in the 4S chip and that Apple should take responsibility for sorting this out at its own expense.

regarding your comments that have either not been approved, or may have been removed:-

my wifi button is greyed; if Iput the phone in the fridge for 15 mins the button is green, the phone looks for the networks (tried home and work) but the wheel spins indefinately as the phone can't find any wifi; if I re-set network settings the button goes grey again

if i put a hairdryer on the phone for say 2-3 minutes and switch on while hot/warm the networks are visible and it appears that I can connect to he wifi but as soon as the phone cools to room temperature the button is greyed again; I have only done this once as it doesn't seem right to heat the phone up that much, maybe I should do it again for longer, I don't know

but getting to your question yes it would appear that as the heat/cold makes the wifi work for a short while it maynotbe permaently damaged; I wish some technically minded person would confirm, but my understanding is that the wifi chip is temperature sensitive and may work when hot but or cold but it's been permanently damaged and either will work for a short while, possibly hang in for longer but most will not work again at normal temperature; if you know more information in this respect please let me know

and for me this is the information that would be helpful; if the OS update has caused the 4s wifi chips to go into meltdown, or pushed them ove the edge, and have permanent damage, then this would assist us in making an informed decision about the need for a software update/physical repair/phone replacement.

Thanks for such detailed information. I'm a bit reluctant to do this cooling and/or heating process unless I start to be the cause of damage and not Apple - but certainly will post anything else I hear about this.

I wish I could be as optimistic as claudiofrombl - and believe that software changes alone could resolve the issue - we will see!

(Bin Kroon posted another long explanation of how he sees the issue going back to iOS 6 which may be right.)

Yup, whichever way we look at the question - pure software issue or software exposing hardware issue - it seems to me that Apple is responsible and needs to take action to solve it for all its users without expecting them to pay. We shall see ...

Oct 13, 2013 5:35 AM in response to Bin Kroon

Bin Kroon - that is my understanding and, I feel sums it up perfectly, unforunately, even the bits about Apple and their refusal to comment, as you state it wouldn't be good for them to replace 100's of 4s phones and you're right people get fed up, have lives and get a new phone and Apple breath a sigh of relief BUT still very wrong!

claudiofrombl - I sincerely hope you are right, there's nothing more that would please me to see another update that fixes it; but, lots of posts point toward hardware failure?

dzseti - I too wish I could be optimistic about software; somehow though I fear that Bin Kroon summarises the reality in that people get fed up, accept their fate, can't beat the might of Apple, get new phones, active participants reduce, and slowly the pain in Apple's *** eases and goes away!

if anyone technial knows whether the phone can be repaired and what needs to be done it would be appreciated if you could share this with us and then we can make an informed decision on the best resolution personally?

Guys,

Y'all have no idea! I've been at the local apple store (30 min away) 2 times in a week and a half, and just booked my third appt. Same issue - wifi either greyed out or won't find a network. Mostly, greyed out. First time I went, they gave me a new phone, restoring from my old phone, and it worked great for 24 hours. Then same thing happened. Went back 2 days later, bc that was the first available appt time. Got another new phone, this time they set it up as a new phone bc they said that whatever was corrupt from the original phone was probably transferred to the second one. It worked (mostly) for a week, now it's happening again. Also, the two new phones both were/are getting really hot after a few minutes of using them. I can feel it through my otter box, it's that bad. It's ridiculous. Next available time is in two days so going back over for, I assume, another new phone. This time when they ask if I want to upgrade to ios7 the answer is going to be NO. Which I tried to say the second time I was there but they assured me it wasn't a ios7 problem. Awesome. Good thing I have all the time in the world to keep going back over there. Oh wait... I DO have a job...

Oct 14, 2013 3:24 PM in response to L8TAHOE

Ridicules. This is how you fix electronics, with hair dryers and freezers?? You realize how absurd that is? Maybe a good chocolate dip in the toilet might do the trick too huh?? Maybe my excrement might pull the evil out of the phone and it will magically start working.

I think I'll wait for a proper fix. iOS7 messed up the WiFi on my phone, Apple needs to fix it with a software update. That's the proper way to fix what they messed up.

No hair dryer, no freezers, no chocolate dipping, no rubbing my phone on my nipples hoping for a miracle fix.

FIX IT!!
