Iphone 4s ios 7 battery issues

I posted this question in the basics forum, but it probably belongs here: Since installing iOS 7 on my iPhone 4s, the battery life seems to be significantly reduced, at least judging by how quickly my battery life percentage meter keeps dropping. I've gone through and turned off all sorts of settings, like location services on most everything, etc. Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue? Anyone know of any fixes?

Hi cmadara,

from what I've seen with my iPhone 4 iOS 7 simply drains the battery very fast in certain situations.

I have replaced the battery of my iPhone 4 (after 3 years and constant use) and the battery still got draine very fast.

I noticed that if I turn of push and periodic mail fetching my iPhone 4 would last almost 3 days of normal use. With mail fetching turned on it would go from 100% battery to 0% within 8-9 hours.

The strange thing is, after I had turned off mail fetching for about 4 days the iPhone will work normal even if I turn on mail fetching (15 minutes interval).

I think something is wrong with the way iOS 7 handles background activity of apps and some apps (or system processes) can stay active in the background draining battery very fast.

I think it's not a hardware problem.

Depending on how old your iPhone is and how often its battery got charged it could be that battery is to old to hold enough charge for a whole day, but that probably only makes the problem worse. It could be that two problems are affecting the iPhone at the same time (iOS draining the battery very fast and an old battery that needs replacement).

Try to turn of everything that allows application to be active in the background - mail fetching, background updating and things like that. If the battery life gets back to normal you can try to activate things one by one. If the battery gets drained very fast again just turn off the last thing you turned on. I hope this will help you until Apple fixes this bug.

We gotta keep posting about this stuff guys... it is like a petition, and this is our evidence. I am currently unsure if iphone 4s battery will fit in i pod touch... I will try it, and see if I can swap them... that will tell me if my battery is toast in the iphone. (of which, I only used for 6 months), and bought brand new.My ipod is ios6.13 , I never updated it. I will check it out this week, and post my claims.

I haven't read all the posts on this thread, but like many users I had an iPhone 4S that had great battery life, but when I went to IOS 7, my battery life was suddenly awful. Although my phone was 15 months old, I didn't think the battery was a problem since the change in battery life was so dramatic and appeared related to IOS 7.

I took my phone to an Apple store and they ran a diagnostic on the phone. They found that the battery was fine but there were some indications that some components of the OS were crashing - that was known to cause battery issues.

They had me back up my phone to iCloud and then they did a full restore on my phone. After that, I restored my backup. They warned me that sometimes a restore would bring my problem back. If that happened I should just do a full restore and don't restore the backup. (It's like starting with a new phone.) After a few days, I realized the battery life was still bad. I decided I would do a full restore again and not recover from a back up.

Here's what I did:

  • connected the phone to my PC and got all the photos and other data I wanted from the phone
  • using iTunes, I did a factory restore on the phone (all of my data was wiped from the phone)
  • I set up my phone from scratch - I did not recover from back up

PROBLEM SOLVED! My battery life is now comparable to what I had before the IOS 7 upgrade.

I know that wiping out the phone can be a hassle, but if you are syncing your contacts, calendar, etc... with Outlook or iCloud, you can probably use those to get the data back on the iphone. My contacts and calendar were synced on a corporate Outlook Exchange server, so everything came back.

I have done the connect to iTunes and restore to factory and set as new Phone thing 7 times and nothing has worked for me I do not know how it work for me!!!

My aunt is going to London in Christmas, I am gonna give her my 4S so when she goes to Apple store there they can figure out what is wrong with my 4S and fix it or either replace it and give me a new 4S or newer model for an extra amount of cash and the old 4S.

This is ridiculous!

I'm having the same issues with my 4S since updating to 7.0.4. It seems to be an issues with how the OS gets information from the battery about how much charge it has. It will go from 65% to turning off. Then after 10 min of trying to turn back on (without charging it at all) it will turn back on and say it has 25% battery, then die again, turn back on and say it's back to 65% again. I'm reverting back to 7.0.2 until this crap is fixed.

Well I contacted AT&T on their chat line because that is who we bought the phone through. Since the phone isn't under warranty any longer they suggested that I contact Asurion, the third party insurance company. AT&T actually advised me that after the warranty is done, to drop it. The person was probably too honest. He advised me that they have had numerous complaints about them, but I could contact them since I was still paying for the insurance. As for the reason for the problem. The ATT person stated that he is experiencing the same problem as well as many of his coworkers. Other than disabling most of the things you really don't want to, he suggested to buy a battery extender. I contacted Asurion insurance. They offered to tell me how to save power on the phone. They told me the same things that everyone else knows about. As for the replacement! After a deductible of $199 they would send us a refurburished phone. It will not be new or equal to the phone because the phone is 18 months old. And, they would have to cut off services to the phone and I would have to wait until snail mail delivered the phone. "How long would you expect it to take for me to get the phone?" "I guess it depends on how fast everyone handles it. You know, it is Christmas don't you." After reading the thousands of consumer complaints of this company I will be cancelling that insurance as well as the same insurance I have on my phone.

Hi all,

I wrote earlier regarding my frustrations on battery life after upgrading to IOS7 from my iphone 4. The following 2 steps have made the battery life substantially better for me and although it is not as battery efficient as in IOS6, it seems to be improving with time and charges.

1. Turn phone off and on then do a soft reset (by holding sleep/wake button and home button together until screen goes black with apple logo)

2. Turn phone off and on then go to >Settings >General >Reset and select 'Reset all settings'. Then once completed, turn phone off and on. (try this step one more time if it does not seem to make a difference)

The benefit of this method is that you do not loose any data or apps. Only your phone settings get reset (e.g. wallpaper, keyboard languages, wifi passcodes etc.) It is also worth noting that after completing these two steps, I followed guidance on how to optimise settings to improve battery on IOS7 (e.g. Background app refresh etc). I will not go into these here because they are well covered by searching articles on google.

At least I can live with my phone now without having to do 3,4,5 charges a day. What really makes a difference is that it is barely loosing battery in idle/sleep mode which was not the case before.

Hope this is useful to some of you and yields positive results.

Ok I have to admit something,

I am now having those issues with my battery no I've had my same iPhone for about two years. I'm now on my second iPhone and bought my first iPhone and after about a year I started having some major issues with it. I went into the apple store and told them what was going on and they replaced my phone for free since it was still under manufactures hardware warranty. Now I'm on my second iPhone and I just started having these issues and I believe it could be a sign that my phone is old and I need a new one. Now I'm going to stay with apple and buy a new iPhone 5s and I'm never going to buy an android because they have waaaaaaayyyyy more problems than Apple and the battery life is terrible and you have to end up replacing the battery within the first year you get it! Also they are quite more breakable because they don't have as good of cases for them. So I wouldn't recommend buying an android but if you have an apple care agreement with Apple that may cover your battery or for me if my phone acts up I will go to apple and address the issue with an apple senior advisor.
