I just had this happen to me too! So scary, but I found the fix on a forum.

Just go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud account and make sure the button for contacts is green!

Apparently this is happening to quite a few people and multiple times. So just keep checking the settings if it happens again. I guess for some reason iCloud keeps unsyncing the contacts :/

Hope this helps!

Hello Sara,

Did you restore from backup or update to iOS directly from phone? You might want to do a full reset (MAKE SURE YOU DO A BACKUP THROUGH ITUNES FIRST AND VERIFY THAT ALL CONTACTS ARE BACKED UP THROUGH ICLOUD.COM FIRST) by going to below:

SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> RESET --> RESET ALL CONTACTS AND SETTINGS.

This will erase all contacts and settings. I was having some of the same issues and I assume it has something to do with a corrupt icloud file in the legacy iOS 6 code. I also had problems updating apps and such. You might want to try this first as it wont erase your entire phone:

SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> RESET --> RESET NETWORK SETTINGS

This might solve your problem first. I am at work so I will check if you comment back and will get back to you in the next 2 hours if this doesnt work. Good luck and like I mentioned above please do a physical backup before trying any of this on iTunes so you can at least get back to where you are now.

Hi Cody,

Thanks for sucha great answer! I did the Rest Network Settings and that didn't make a difference. I have redone my contacts with the help of friends and my husband sending me the contacts I needed. I have made sure to back it up onto my computer now that it is up to date.

When I went to iCloud.com by contacts weren't there. I really have no idea what happened. But I am pretty much back to normal.

Thanks!

Sara

Hi,

This ahppens when we enable iCloud first time.

Resolution

What you need

1. A PC (assuming you have contacts backed up in Windows 7. Usually contacts will be in location C:\Users\<username>\Contacts

<username>: is user windows 7 login ID

2. iPhone connected to PC

3. iTunes

Go to iPhone, settings -> iCould -> Contacts. Turn off contacts

Connect your iPhone to PC, run iTunes, Select Library (on right hand side corner, Click on iPhone, Select Info button (after Summary button). You can see Sync Contacts, select Windows. click on Sync button (bottom right corner). Bingo you can have your contacts back to your phone.

Once you get your contacts back, enable Contacts in iCloud (settings -> iCould -> Contacts)

The above procedure works for those who have contacts in Windows PC,

Thanks kat

I first noticed something odd when I was looking at iMessage and the messages were identified with phone #s showing 1+area code and then number. No names. Then when I selected info there were no contacts. I am using 2nd gen iPad running latest ios7. My iPhone still has ios6 cause I wanted to make sure no big bugs. My phone had all my contacts. When I checked settings all mail, contacts, etc were unchecked! I never unchecked them so don't know how that happened. Anyway thanks for the solution!

I have had the ios7 update since the day it came out. Just now literally in front of my eyes as I am replying to a text message the recepients name disappears and is replaced with only numbers... My contacts are now lost. I have not downloaded anything new on the iphone except the new ios and anything app that was previously on there that required an update. This came completely out of the blue. I am so frustrated right now and now of the fixes mentiond here work. I dont have an icloud backup of my contacts and I didnt tell the phone to sync with anything so it shouldnt be trying to alter my contacts. Such a waste of time and energy....gaaaah I am so furious. Some apple tech better actually answer this thread for once.....

I have to say that I love Apple's technology, have an iPhone and an iPad. However, Apple has never, and perhaps never will be, a company that you can rely on as a professional working in a business environment. Contacts that are lost, calendars that don't sync, alarms that don't go off, the list goes on and on. It is a joke. Great for fun and games, fantastic for that, but not for serious business. Keep all your contacts and appointments and everything else that is important on some other company's platform.
