Major Problem with Keyboard Shortcuts in iOS 7

There's a significant issue with keyboard "Shortcuts" after upgrading to iOS 7. If you try to access the shortcuts (Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts), it may not let you and may instead "kill" the Settings app and return you to your home screen (it may let you in at first, but will kick you out after about 30 seconds). I have done a lot of testing and have been on with Apple for about 3 hours (the guy was great, even though we weren't able to fix it yet).

We determined that you may experience this problem if:

1. You are running iOS 7 and either (a) upgraded from iOS 6 to iOS 7, or (b) have restored from a device that either ran iOS 6 or was upgraded to iOS 7

AND

2. if you have turned "On" the option under iCloud to sync "Documents and Data"

The Apple rep was ultimately able to replicate the issue and it was through the testing that we reached the above conclusions. You may be able to go into Shortcuts at first (by tapping the Shortcut button), but after a few minutes it may kick you out and send you to the Home screen. If that happens, you won't be able to get back into the shortcuts. Post here if you experience this issue, or if you have any additional info. Apple is actively looking into it and hopefully we'll get a fix soon.

Darn... Really frustating... I don't know what else you could do. If you want, maybe you can delete the shortcuts from iCloud as well. Do you have a Mac ? If so, I have heard they were located in your Library>Mobile Document folder (that's where everything from iCloud is). I don't know which folder, but one does contain all your shortcuts. The one your iPhone will restore after the fix. If you delete it and do the fix again, they shouldn't be able to recover, but you will have to enter them back in yourself... Not very convenient, but your last resort...

I really don't know how Apple is progressing on this issue. I don't think they are really working on it because it is not that hard to fix, but the last update does not solve the problem. Maybe if you go to an Apple Store and ask them they will find a fix specific to your iPhone.

Good luck, if you need any more help, I'll be there

Hi A.

I had the same problem after upgrading my iPhone 5 to a iPhone 5S. The following solved my problem:

  1. I disabled iCloud on the iPhone.
  2. on www.icloud.com go to Account/Setting -> advanced -> reset Documents & Data (this does not erase any data!)
  3. wait some minutes. At least I did... Check your Mac if the text shortcuts are there. (Mine were fine from now on on the Mac).
  4. sign up for your iCloud-Account on the iPhone again

Voila! My data (all the text shortcuts that were on my Mac) was there and synced both ways. After 1 week now it is still working. It also solved another problem that appeared after upgrading to the new iPhone: iCloud-Backups did not start automatically every day. I had to kick it manually. It now works perfectly.

Good luck with that...!

If your shortcuts don't appear after some minutes - wait some time! The data appears one by one (contacts, calendar, ......, shortcuts), I would try to enter single shortcuts on your iPhone and see if sync starts working correctly. Then test entering shortcuts on your Mac and watch what happens. If it syncs fine, this would mean that your data was not stored in iCloud anymore (ant there is "the truth"), only on your iPhone. At least your ecosystem would work again and you had to enter all your shortcuts again.

ok, I can use my brother's iMac and how sync is going....

but currently what i can see is that I have no shortcuts in my iphone...... it seems like reset document and data have deleted all my shortcuts.... but that is not a problem since i can re-enter them... my only concern is if this procedure is the final fix... and my shortcuts will be available then and if i wil be able to create more shortcuts withut lose them

tonight I will test if mac and Iphone are syncing properly and i will let you know

thanks !

for a backgroud understanding: I don't think that the reset of "Document & Data" on icloud.com has deleted any of your iCloud data. If an iOS device that has iCloud re-enabled does not show a particular data, I would think that this data was not stored on iCloud. If so: check if it syncs correctly both ways. If so: start over again entering your data for iCloud should store it then.

Thank you, Allezxandre. Your solution on http://allezxandre.clarify-it.com/d/dhvzkz is excellent and solved my problem.

In my case, it appears my shortcut (to auto-correct Pokemon to Pokémon 😝) broke CloudUserDictionary completely, and it ballooned to an incredible 46.7 MB (!!!) resulting in huge lags on my iPhone 5c.

Thank you!

Well,

I solved my case. I figured out that corrupted files were being stored on icloud as both my iphone and ipad had this problem. Following is what I did on both ipad and iphone at the same time:

  • Removed icloud account - settings/icloud/delete account
  • reset all settings - settings/general/reset/reset all settings
  • reset keyboard dictionary - settings/general/reset/reset keyboard dictionary
  • hard reset pressing sleep/wake button along with home button until the apple logo appears
  • hand copied all shortcut list
  • Deleted almost all keyboard shortcuts...This took a long time on a very slow process. Every time one shortcut was removed, the shortcut list freeze or disappeared and I had to wait up to 45 seconds for it to appear again or unfreeze. One shortcut was a problem because I tried to remove it without success...after several trials I gave up and let it there, no problem...
  • hard reset pressing sleep/wake button along with home button until the apple logo appeared
  • Reinserted icloud account only on my ipad first, all settings such as wifi accounts, international keyboard, wallpapers, icloud options etc. had to be manually set again and let it sync with icloud for some hours;
  • After that, no shortcuts were there anymore and I could insert them again and everything went ok on my ipad.
  • Did the same last two steps above on my iphone and it worked too

What was your particular shortcut that couldn't be deleted? Had it perhaps also an accent in it? Or other special characters?

I see another user has the Pokemon / Pokémon shortcut. I've got the Gé / Ge shortcut that seems to be troublesome. It might be related to special chars?!

If only there was an easy method of purging the data stored on the iCloud server itself. Because I'm afraid my corrupt dictionary is stored on Apple's servers. So everytime I activate the Doc&Setting on my devices it will try to sync that corrupt database again. Sigh...
