iPhone 5s Power Button Loose/Rattling Noise

Today I had scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for my loose rattling power button. I can hear it rattle when I record video and move around, the video even records the sound and it interferes with the video. It is also bothersome, in general, to have a rattling noise on my phone. The "genius" had me unlock the phone (since I have a passcode/fingerprint I.D) and he took it to the back to take a look at it, came back and said there's nothing wrong and that it's the "vibrating motor." Yeah, sure. I place my finger on the power button and move my phone and it has 0 rattling, when I let go it rattles like a maraca. I then asked him if he could open it and try and fix it for me, and he told me that he had just opened it and everything checked out fine. Another lie, he gave me my phone back unlocked and into my settings. If he opened it it would have been turned off, and on again which would request my passcode which he doesn't have. My previous iPhone 3/4S/5 has never done this and I see it as a simple fix if they were to really open it. I have fully purchased a new iPhone every year for the past 3 years and when I encounter a problem I'm lied to and told there is nothing I can do about it. I'll be scheduling another appointment soon in hopes I get a different employee that will actually help me.

What I want to know is, is there a fix to this?
When I take videos it captures the rattling noises ruining the video.

It's not down to the consumer to solve the problem.

That aside, I had a breakthrough yesterday whilst speaking to a member of the online Apple Support team. They were FINALLY honest with me about the defect, saying that the rattling in the device is definately a known issue and the engineers are working on it. They said that Apple support gets chats like this a lot and a manager has also confirmed that it's a known issue. They apologised for the nonsense that I've had to go through trying to get a truthful answer. Now that's been said, I'm definately getting a refund and waiting a few months for a corrected batch.

Moscow-Russia

I have made order on apple site for iphone 5s 32g space grey, and the power button was rattling so noisy, then i called apple and they said don't worry we change it, second, third, and all same rattle, i called for fourth time and then the manager said i make you deal, lets change last time and i give you apple case for free, i said ok and i made a change and the 4th was rattling, but not so noisy, but it does, i called apple and said i want to make refund, i was so confused, because on that day, i gone to some apple stores in Moscow city and all same rattle thing, it was hard for me to choose give it back or no, but then i gave it back today and they will refund me soon! till today i was believing that all iphone 5s rattle.

but few hours ago, i gone to huge store where they sell lots of phones, and there i checked 3 iphone 5s, and HOPPPPPPP

this 3 iphone 5s don't rattle, and the power button loose is so solid. i shaked it so hard, no noise at all.

then i became completly sure that not all iphone 5s rattle. simply all you need is luck, to find the place where their iphones don't rattle.

Good Luck everyone!

Yes, Apple or any other store they will say it is normal and they will never change it for you because of this, but if you are protected by the law 14 days of exchange or refund, he has to change it or get refund.

case number doesn't help, as i said, all you need is luck, just open and take a look, you don't like, walk away, keep looking until you find what you want.

Today i saw a lot of phones which have no problems at all in the power button.

my friend also has a phone shop in new york and he said all his iphone 5s power button solid.

cause he has contract with apple, if he get defect in more than 2 phones, they pay penelaty or something.

we do mistakes that we buy from apple direct and thats why i guess we all face such a problems.

we shall buy it from normal small phone shops, which they know what they are selling.

Apple Stores don't care... they can sell, change as much as they want and who knows maybe they are selling us refurbished phones as new.

Recieved my iPhone 5s Space Grey yesterday (20/12/13) from my Telco and can confirm there is this non stop rattling with the power button. Will go directly to Apple instead of the Telco for replacement. I hope there is a recall on its way, I have been an Apple consumer for 12+ years, from Mac OS X through to every 2nd generation of the iPhone but if they're going to start making these shortcuts and not be transparent with the more than obvious default in their device, than I think I may switch over to another product soon, they've all copied Apple anyway so the products aren't that different, especially when you consider that Apple are now losing any advantage with their lack of quality control. It's really disappointing to say the least. 😐

I've Bought an Iphone 5S here in Portugal, at full price to Optimus cellular network.

One of the uses I give to the phone is on my Product Design Master degree; recording small movies of medical devices.

I was thinking of using the slow motion and normal recording speed, and I really need the sound to be most “clean" as possible, since I can check some problems with the sound that some mechanisms make when they are working.

It was in one of this experiences that I've found the the loose button “wake/sleep" makes a lot of loud noise when moving the phone, and that noise stays on the video.

Just for you to know, I'm a big costumer of Apple products:

  • Original IPhone 16Gb
  • Iphone 3GS 16Gb
  • Iphone 4 16 Gb
  • Iphone 5 16 Gb
  • Iphone 5S 16Gb (the Cellular network that has the phone and my money)

Original Top of the line unibody Macbook Pro 15" (now with my wife) and still working great

Top of the line

  • Macbook Pro 17" Mid 2010
  • iMac 24” - 2013

And a LOT of Apps

Until 25 October, I never had a single problem, with any device.

The Iphone 5S (699,98€) came with the problem described above… After a couple of days (less than the 14 day, that for sure) I came to the store to try to resolve the problem.

They have pick the phone, and in 21 November they presented my with a unit with a worst problem than the original iphone 5S, the 4th Dezember they presented with another one, and with the exact same problem. Now 21th Dezember I’m without money and phone.

On the first week of January I’m forced to take this case to justice, since now they said that the noise on the video it’s a feature of the phone, not a problem. The noise caused by a loose button it’s a feature?

Is this the kind of treatment I deserve from apple?

Because of me, a lot of my family and friends have a apple products. I know that this means something to Apple. So please, do try to resolve the situation.

If you contact me I can give you any elements you need.

best regards,

Obrigado pela informação Cristina, no entanto eu comprei à Optimus. Eu sei que se fosse na Apple teria o problema resolvido à muito.

Custa-me a acreditar que a boa vontade da apple vá tão longe que se meta com a Optimus.

Same problem with me here in Croatia.I sold 4s in November and bought 5s...After that i send phone back to the shop and it has been "seviced" till now. No replacement no nothing. I used the iPhone for 5 days!!! IWe do not have Apple store so I don't even know where the phone is.I am a big Apple fan but I think this is the last time I bought their product. I left feedback on official page and asked for help on chat with some guy called Joe and nobody gave me a solution!

I used to have 3GS, 4 and 4S iPhone and this is shameful. Apple is going down since Steve Jobs has gone and they are ruining products constantly. For those who bought iPhones like us earlier it is the biggest problem because we are used to perfection and now we pay (in my case 1000€) and getting **** for our money.

I am applauding on people in Apple to contact us because we are very dissapointed and ready to go as far as it takes to solve this.
