WIFI disabled - Greyed out since iOS 7 update on iphone 4s

My 4s has had no WIFI issues until i updated to iOS 7. after the update it worked for about 20 hours then disabled. I noticed my wifi was no longer connected, i checked the wifi was on and it was, still unable to connect i restarted the phone and now the WI-FI button is grey, dim and wont switch on. However Bluetooth does work fine, so I’m thinking it’s not the chip.

network setting reset

factory reset..... itunes crashed while restoring my data so now unable to re-sync my personal data

battery drain

freezer

nothing seems to fix this issue ! after reading forums it seems a similar thing happened when iOS 6.x.x was released, my 4s is out of warranty, apple seem to be taking no responsibility for the issue, clearly caused by the update as had zero issues until that point… which I find “convenient” as it so happens to co-inside with new iphone launches.

Please help anyone in the same boat ?

not a happy camper!

Guys,

I have been suffering with wifi grayed out problem in iOS7. I found a process that helped me almost every time my wifi went disabled. Reset networking settings/hard reset does not work with iOS7 to fix this issue. Never tried freezer/hair dryer method.

1. Drain battery untill iphone goes off

2. Leave it off for couple of hours

3. Plug in to charger

I left ' (apostrophe) from my iPhone name. Follow these simple steps once your wifi goes disable.

I think i have said enough, and i also post the solution. i have ask a repair shop to do the "reflow" and it works for about 2 weeks, and its back today. As it is less than one month since last repair so they just do some "cooling" and its works again. not sure how long it will last.

But from this issue/case, i am sure my next phone will not be iphone(unless this iphone 4s can last for 2 more years), reason being, regardless of what warrently or whatever, my expection is a phone should last more than 4 years or more. my old nokia of 6 years still working as of today. Yes it is not smart phone, but smart phone or not, i have never have a electronics item(CRT TV/LED TV/high-fi/etc) last then less than 2 years. But this iphone 4s (which is like my baby, i never abuse/throw it /whatever) last only 1 years and about 8 month. My PC of 4 years still works.

So tell me what the hack is this !!!. Does it means warrenty of 1 years means if it last more than 1 year is lucky ??

so this means whoever buy a apple product must buy life time warrenty(if it exist) ????

Found out WIFI Greyed Out is both hardware/software problem.

  • It's hardware problem because you have a WIFI chipset belongs to a batch with "weak" circuit.
  • It's software problem because IOS6 & 7 is not designed to run older iPhone, partucularly 4S. The IOS is pumping so much data through the WIFI system that those with "weak" circuit just overheated and die.

Why FREEZING can revive dead WIFI ? Becaue the WIFI chipset has an in-build safety feature and it will shutoff whenever it's overheated.

Why Hair Dryer HOT BLOWING can revive WIFI ? Not sure if this will work but if it does, it simply means the hot air has "better connected" the "weak" circuit in those batches of iPhones fitted with problematic WIFI chipset.

So, the solution for those can't be fixed by mere resetting the Apple way or some Airport on/off ... is really deep Freezing it, and Hot Blow it. And whenever it dies, Freeze it again ...

Apple can't say this is not a software problem - The fact that they refused to let you downgrade the software simply implies the software is the problem. Well, your old phone such as 4S is designed to run on IOS 5 something, not those after that ... especially IOS 7 - make WIFI of old phone dies faster.

Hi folks,

I thought I would share with you my experience talking to Apple about this issue for the last 1 hour.

I have exactly the same problem. I own an iPhone 4s (1.5 years old, out of warranty by 6 months or so) that lost its WiFi capabilities as soon as I upgraded to iOS7. I tried all the recommended suggestions - resetting network settings, restoring the phone, etc. No cigar.

I just had a 1 hour discussion with a "Senior Adviser" at Apple here in the US in regards to this issue. As friendly as he was, I want all of you to appreciate the fundamental issues that differentiate this problem from many other support-related concerns. It must be approached with an appropriate level of consumer outrage, and I call upon all of you not to take this lying down.

The facts are very simple. Thank you all for writing in about freezing the phone, heating it up, etc., as solutions to this problem. While these are helpful, from a legal perspective it should not fall to us, as bona fide customers, to find such workarounds for a failure caused by the manufacturer of the product for which we have paid - Apple. I would like to focus on Apple's full responsibility to its consumers in this specific WiFi/iOS7 situation.

1) There is no debate over the causal nexus between updating the phone to iOS7 and the resulting effect on the phone's WiFi capabilities, as experienced by all of you and me. Apple cannot and will not deny this point.

2) When Apple releases a software update, consumers are encouraged to upgrade to it. This is part of the continuing service that Apple commits to provide you, as a customer and owner of their products.

3) The post-iOS7 WiFi failure is the equivalent of a manufacturer providing their customer with a maintenance-related service for which he/she has already paid (i.e., entitlement to software upgrades are part of the price you pay for the iPhone device at purchase) that ultimately destroys one of the product's most crucial capabilities. It is the equivalent of purchasing a set of new tyres for your car, returning to the manufacturer of those tyres to avail of a manufacrturer-recommended service improvement to which you are entitled and for which you have paid, and after the service is complete, your car is no longer able to shift out of second gear. When you approach the tyre manufacturer, they tell you to buy a new car. Would you accept this outcome?

Warranties are irrelevant. That Apple is only honoring WiFi/iOS7 complaints filed by those within the warranty period is bizarre. They may take shelter behind warranty and/or product terms and conditions, but keep in mind that the law is fundamentally intended to be just. Above all else. What has transpired here is not just.

As a long-time consumer of Apple products, both at the enterprise and personal level, and as a lawyer, I am disgusted by this experience and the lack of any credible explanation provided to me by the "Senior Adviser" I spoke with. I was informed that a memo had come down from corporate not to honor service/replacement calls relating to this issue from customers out of warranty, and that as much as he wanted to help, he could not as a result of this memo.

This is a major slight to paying consumers and is unconscionable from a business perspective. It is not the standard of service one might (have previously) expected from Apple. I have never experienced this kind of brazen dismissiveness from them before, and it has come as a shock.I intend to see this matter through to its logical conclusion through any and all means available, including legal recourse.

I would encourage all of you to consider the merits of taking further action against Apple in this regard. Seek out independent legal advice, look through consumer protection forums, and if feasible, take this matter forward wherever you are.

If nothing else, plaster the internet with write-ups of your experience. Do so in consumer forums where people are evaluating which phone to buy. We must strike back in such a way that it may actually make a difference to the company.

Best wishes and luck to all of you.

Yet another victim here. The company I work for has been impacted by this. Our Sales team is having issues due to the grey out. This is fundamentally wrong. Why Apple will not just face the truth is so disappointing. Product Leadership comes with responsibility. Step up to you obligation Apple. Better you do it, than being forced by a class action!

Do not accept Apples BS if you live in EU. demand your rights !!!

""The European Union's Justice Commissioner singled out Apple on Tuesday as an example of poor enforcement of consumer rules, saying that E.U. nations need to more forcefully take the iPhone maker to task regarding its responsibilities with regard to warranties."""
