Restoring Backup - Incorrect Password

I am attempting to restore my iPhone which was last backup this morning. When I enter my password, I get an error message stating that my password is incorrect. That can't possibly be right. In fact, I just entered my password to get access to Apple Support.

I fixed this problem. I never set my iphone backups to be encrypted. But after ios7 upgrade, iTunes kept prompting me for a password to restore my iphone backup (argggg!).

I tried my Apple ID password: No.

I tried my MacOS "user" password: No.

Tried my iphone's unlock passcode: No.

Then I found a video on youtube that gave me a big hint. Video is called "After Updating iPhone to iOS 7 How to Restore iTunes Backup Password".

This told me there is a SEPARATE "iTunes backup password" that iTunes must have prompted me to set a long time ago.

So I tried a bunch of passwords I have used in the past, and after about 5 tries, I typed the matching password and the restore started and completed.

The video claims there's a program to recover the "itunes backup pw", but I didn't need to go there (since I eventually got a match).

Fixed it! So when dealing with this Encrypted Password mess, I tried every password I could remember (without any luck). Then I tried this “If you can’t remember the password for your encrypted backup” reset trick. Your phone MUST have iOS 11 or higher. It’s sounds scary, but I didn’t really lose any information or apps during this whole process. I say “really” since it didn’t allow me to transfer my email passwords, so I had to set them up again, but that was easy to do afterwards.

Go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset All Settings, then enter your phone’s iOS passcode (you’re everyday multi-digit homescreen unlock code). Follow the Reset Settings. It won’t affect your user data or passwords, but it will reset settings like brightness, Home screen layout, and wallpaper. It also removes that dreaded encrypted backup password. Once your phone restarts, the check will be gone, and you can sync it normally again to create a unencrypted backup. Use that to transfer your old phone’s contacts, and everything else to your new iPhone by selecting the “Restore from Backup” button on your phones iTunes phone summary screen.

Here’s the link to the Apple page where it talks about it under the title “If you can’t remember the password for your encrypted backup”

(toward the bottom of the page). https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205220

Good luck and I hope this helps!

There have been a few answers on this. Try every password you can think of and you will finally get it. The password that worked for me (after trying over 30 that I've used in the past) was the most obvious that I used many years ago that I never use now. Dig in your wayback brain for passwords you used in the past and you will eventually find the one that works.

hi.

if none of the password is working then, while you were setting up itunes, it might have prompted you for a password, so basically your password for itunes is different from all other passwords associated with your iphone.

there are videos on youtube available for the same stuff.

so you just need to toggle up your mind to remember the password you used for itunes.

hope this helps. 🙂
