Restoring Backup - Incorrect Password

I am attempting to restore my iPhone which was last backup this morning. When I enter my password, I get an error message stating that my password is incorrect. That can't possibly be right. In fact, I just entered my password to get access to Apple Support.

I fixed this problem. I never set my iphone backups to be encrypted. But after ios7 upgrade, iTunes kept prompting me for a password to restore my iphone backup (argggg!).

I tried my Apple ID password: No.

I tried my MacOS "user" password: No.

Tried my iphone's unlock passcode: No.

Then I found a video on youtube that gave me a big hint. Video is called "After Updating iPhone to iOS 7 How to Restore iTunes Backup Password".

This told me there is a SEPARATE "iTunes backup password" that iTunes must have prompted me to set a long time ago.

So I tried a bunch of passwords I have used in the past, and after about 5 tries, I typed the matching password and the restore started and completed.

The video claims there's a program to recover the "itunes backup pw", but I didn't need to go there (since I eventually got a match).

I did 2 things. 1. I read to sync the phone then restore. 2. Change your apple id (icloud) password to a new one.

I did number 2 first then 1 and my phone restored all my contacts.

Not sure what did it but I'm thinking syncing it first did.

I still didn't have contacts but about 2 hours later at work I checked it and they were there.

Hi guys,

I've been through a nightmare with restoring my backup - like most of you have!

I had never set a password for my backup, and I knew that I hadn't. I called apple - who told me if I didn't find the password, the data was lost forever. I've been SO upset. A friend of mine used a password cracking program that gave me the first 2 letters.... ap***.

Go figure- the password was apple.

NEVER would I use this password - so somewhere along the line there has been a problem.

Anyway, it worked and yippee I have all my data back. If all else fails, try 'apple'. I really hope this works for some of you as I know how devastating it can be.

Good luck 🙂

This. Is. A. Nightmare.

So, here's my issue. I have never set up the encryption and I've read that there are other ways it can be done (setting up pins, switching phones, etc. etc.). Okay, fine. I can't fix that issue. But me trying all my old passwords and still getting nothing? I'm so frustrated. I downloaded something from Tenorshare called UltData and what it does is it allows you to select an iTunes backup file of my iOS device to scan. If it has a lock beside it, it simply asks that you enter the password so that the software can decrypt it. I entered the password that I always use and have tried to unlock the encryption on my iTunes and guess what?! IT WORKED ON THE OTHER PROGRAM. That's right, folks. It worked on the other **** program but it won't work on iTunes. I am absolutely hating this. Not to mention all the good programs that unlock & help you discover 'lost' passwords are for windows. I could just SCREAM. 😠
