Since upgrading to IOS 7 on my Iphone 4s there seems to be problems with the proximity sensor. Taking calls with handset no longer locks the screen and contact with face inadvertently presses keypad numbers resulting in dial tomes mid call. Never had this issue with IOS 6. Is there a setting I can change to rectify this or will I need to wait for next update of IO7 and the problem is sorted.

My iPhone 4S developed this problem a few weeks ago. Definitely after iOS7.
Can't get it fixed, and it is very very annoying..

No, haven't been to Apple yet. Tried to fix it by resetting etc. Right now the sensor is working again, but I don't think that will last.
Haven't seen anywhere that Apple admitted the problem, leave alone solving it.
My interections with Apple resulted in recommendation to reset data and upgrade phone (which I both did without any improvement) and explaining that I just don't hold the phone properly....
So I am frustrated and stuck with the upgraded phone - with proximity sensor not working [properly].

Have the same problem. Since upgrading to iOS7 I inadvertently dial random numbers with my ear every now and then, which annoys me and people on the other end.
In the same time, proximity sensor seems to be generally working, it just fails sometimes. But the fact remains - I didn't experience such problems on iOS6 at all, while now it happens on about every third call: no matter incoming or outgoing.

Three days ago I restored my iPhone from a backup copy. After that it worked flawlessly for a couple of calls and then the error returned.
I've been checking the proximity sensor almost every call; it sure does work most of the time. And then, this afternoon, my phone tried to make a FaceTime call while I was on the phone.
It also has to do with another bug, I discovered. Every now and then I have problems with unlocking the screen. The right-sweep to get the unlock screen won't work. The screen is frozen, it seems. Yesterday I discovered that if I cover and immediately uncover the proximity sensor; the right sweep works again.
I had that error all the time before I restored my phone. Since the restore I had it only once, but I feel it is related to the 'ear-dialing'.
In my case it is at least partly a software problem. Try a restore and report back if your sensor works again.
We have the same problem me and my friends! We all have iphone 4 and after updating to ios 7.1 the sensor started malfunctioning. During the calls because sensor is not working the phone goes on hold or new call is automatically added mute etc.
Does Apple will have a solution on this bug?

A few months ago I posted I experienced this problem with my iPhone 4 and removing an inexpensive third-party screen protector seemed to address the problem.
Unfortunately, the thing that got me functional again appears to be a little more complicated.
After removing the screen protector, I changed phone cases. Specifically, I put my OtterBox Defender case back on, because it has a built-in screen protector and I'm paranoid about scratching my screen.
After a week or two without any issues, I decided to remove my Defender case and go back to the case I was using when my woes began (a glow-in-the-dark LEGO-compatible case from SmallWorks). Much to my surprise and sadness, the problem returned. : (
I also have an OtterBox Commuter case, but I haven't bothered testing with that case yet.
All I can say for sure is that my phone doesn't face dial when I use my Defender case. My thought is that the case covers enough of the proximity sensor so it can function correctly.
Again, I'd like to reiterate that this is what worked for me. It might not (ok, let's be honest---it PROBABLY won't) work for you. Finally, this is simply a work-around. It still doesn't address the root cause that my prox sensor got flaky after an OS upgrade.

if, for some people this can work. Also restore. Also restore values. Also clean screen. Also disable siri.
But for the vast majority do not work. Even replacing the sensor itself, as in my case I've tested with 3 phones, all iphone 5. Even changing all the full display.
It is a firmware issue, it is a firmware problem with 7.x ios mother's SOME / sensors.

What a frustrating experience. We have two Iphone 4 and during a call the keypad is active meaning the call is placed on speaker, keypad numbers are pressed, face time is activated. It is a random problem but definately started about IOS 7.
If Steve were here this would have been solved! My wife is out shoping for different phones and they wont be Apple.
