Can't send mail . . .

As of a couple hours ago every time I try to send mail using my Apple account, I get this error:

Mail could not be sent.

The server for account "@Mac.com IMAP" returned the error "5.7.8 Bad username or password (Authentication failed).."

Your username/password or security settings may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?

Well I know for a fact that my password is just fine because I used it to log in to iCloud and here to post this. Anyone else having any problems? I am hoping this is a typical Apple hiccup.

I'm also getting this same error message, using Outlook. Just tried sending email from my iPhone no problem. I wonder if this might have something to do with my settings in Outlook.

Also - problem only seems to be from Outlook (for me). Email from same accounts on ios devices works fine still. Strange.

I too went and verified all login info and then realized that it was just the password that was not working and only in one place, in a non-Apple mail retrieval app. And I have been having server hangs since they went full iCloud and 86'd POP mail. Which I find funny. Since for decades it was POP and IMAP was a dream and taboo.

Everything everywhere else works just fine. OH! and in trying out iCould and whatnot I stumbled on the Apple System Status page: http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/ and all the many little status lights were bright green. So . . .

Having exactly this problem all day on Outlook 2011 and Entourage 2008, on three different desktop Macs -password repeatedly rejected. Can log in here and on icloud no problem. iPhone mail no problem. Has anyone tried Apple's mac Mail app?

Same issue here. I even tried changing my apple id password (as per someone's suggestion in an older thread). No luck. Have also tried changing the ports etc etc.

Also should add that I use outlook for multiple email addresses and am only having this problem with my mac.com/me.com/icloud.com identity.

Thanks! Just got off the most frustrating chat with Apple support. Essentially, they told me I needed to deal with microsoft (it's an outlook problem) or use mail to get email.

Same problem. I seem to remember a recent Office 2011 update - past week or so - perhaps that has something to do with it.

Exactly! And why did it work for so long then just lately stop. This is typical with Apple when they change things that one wouldn't really want out in public, even though it affects the public using your product.

Well for the time being changing the out going server to: p01-smtp.mail.me.com, worked for me. But for how long? AND this is a sending server problem. Not a software. I hate it when they try to hand you off to the software vendor.

Oh and I use Entourage from Office 2008 with 11 other accounts and they all work and have worked. Only the Mac.com address have I had any issues with and they all were when Apple made a change.

Was pretty floored when I was told to deal with microsoft or use mail. Support talked around it when I asked why it only happens with the mac outgoing mail server. and why it worked last night and not this morning. and why so many other people (as evidenced by a google search of the problem) are having a problem.
