Right,,,, I have tried this extensivly with my iPhone 4,, It seams as if the CPU is struggling to cope with the camera starting up, please try the following simple idea and reply with your results,,

Simply cover the camera lense with your finger or on a flat surface to block light entering the lense, start camera from anywhere, App, FB, etc, give it a few moments and then remove finger etc.

I have removed finger too soon a few times then the camera freezes with a blurred image as if it's all to much for the prcosseor to deal with, but every time I have done this after finding my camera won't start up, it has worked !!

Give it a go, if it works,, Result, If it doesn't for you then I'm sorry

Oh,, that's nice,,,"Bring it back to the store" Can I assume you work for Apple? or did you mean take it back because your not an employee?

Well if your the former,,

Is this really the way Apple are going to deal with a problem 100's if not 1000's are having, if your in warranty or have insurance you can get New for old.

If your expensive Apple product is not covered after 12 months, tough we're not going to correct the ios7 upgrade that has screwed so many peoples products up.

Have had three sessions with Apple Support via chat and have gone through all of the options that everyone else has suggested, am just about to pick up my replacement (under warranty). This is a definite software problem, my iPad mini was purchased about the time that iOS 7 came out, and worked perfectly up to 7.1.

I have worked with Apple stuff since the Mac first came out and this is the first problem I have had, its disappointing. I will post people as to how the replacement goes!

I have found a simple fix that worked for me. I tried rebooting numerous times with no joy. I thought my phone was knackered but then read that deleting any apps that use the camera may help. The first app I deleted was a black and white camera app I had installed ages ago. Immediately my camera started working!

Hope this works for more of you. Let me know if it does.

I've got 2 I pads 1 is fine because I won't update it and the other camera not working due to ios update ,just bought a galaxy tab 3 and I'm very impressed camera is amazing updated and camera still amazing at half the price of an I pad what is the obsession with I phones and I pads there's loads of tablets out there if this camera problem has happened to you and it's still under warranty get ur money back and buy something different unfortunately mine isn't but I find now my I pad is not used I'm always using my Sam tab 3,I need something reliable not something that everyone has brainwashed themselves into believing is the best good luck with your problems with I pads.

Same problem with my 4S. The camera screen is black and won't come on unless I exit the app and force reset the phone (and not always on the first try). I have tried squeezing the camera as suggested by others, and holding my finger over the lens when starting the app with no luck. It seems to have started with iOS 7 and only gets worse with every update.

I've missed some good moments because I couldn't get my phone to cooperate in time 😟

I'm also having this problem. Tried soft and hard resets. Tried resets using computers also. Unfortunately for me,I had a slight crack in my screen so even though I was still under warranty I couldn't get mine fixed!so, I tried to fix it myself by replacing the front camera and it still doesn't work! I get my hopes up every time a new update comes out and check to see if it fixes the problem but no fix as of yet.please apple, solve this issue

I was having the exact same problem with my Ipad2. All of a sudden the camera was black, although the back camera, or whatever you call it to take a photo of yourself, was working as was FaceTime. I thought maybe a reset would solve it, but instead it created an even bigger mess and my Ipad went into portrait mode and got stuck. I called Apple support and after troubleshooting, the rep determined it must be a hardware issue and made an appointment for me at the Apple Store Genius Bar. In the meantime, I started googling the issues and found various message threads about the two issues. I fixed the orientation issue by restarting the Ipad several time as was suggested and lo and behold, it finally fixed itself, but the camera issue remained. I read all the complaints on here that this had started with the latest IOS upgrade and I wondered if this is what happened to mine. I went into Apple yesterday and was told it was a hardware issue and that they could fix it for $250 or I could trade the Ipad in and get a credit towards a new one. I told him I didn't think it was worth $250 and I don't really use the camera so I would just live with it. I told him what I had read on here about this happening since the last update and he said he had never heard anything like that. Well, guess what happened? This morning I wake up to a notification that a new update is available which would fix bugs. I wondered if maybe the camera issue would be fixed. So, nervously, I installed the update. Guess what happened? My camera is working again! It's like magic! So glad I did to spend $250 to get it fixed! I can't get over the timing!

My iPad 3 camera suddenly stopped working and the front facing camera takes 1 picture and then freezes. I treat my iPad very well so I know it didn't drop or otherwise sustain damage.

After following all the instructions on this website, I took it into Apple. The staff also put it through a restore. But the end result is that I was told its a hardware problem and for $299 I could exchange it for a new identical model (another iPad 3).

For that price, I can buy either lens for my iPhone or a new digital camera. Hmmmm....

I'm disappointed in Apple and also disappointed I didn't find this answer on this website months ago when I first started to try to fix this.
