If you wish to download v2.16.1, from support.apple.com/downloads, look for it and click ONLY on the small blue 'Download' link in that page. Don't open up the individual update itself. That's what I did, and a download for the correct dmg file begins.

It's rather big though, 524.1 mb to be accurate.

Edit: This update doesn't remove the persistent App Store v2.14 update though. So far the only way to get rid of it is to hide it (right-click). Until Apple cleans it up, as I suspect the App Store recognises that Apple has released an update for HP Printers but it is for some reason still pulling from the older 2.14 instead of the new 2.16.1, until Apple sorts out that mess the best thing to do is to hide it.

I have just spoken to AppleCare, who then referred me to a senior advisor. Apple is aware of this issue and they are working on a fix ASAP.

In the mean time, the senior advisor confirmed that 'hiding' that 2.14 update in the App Store will not hinder the fix for this intermittent and wrong update. He also agreed that if you really need the latest 2.16.1 driver now, you can get it from Apple's downloads page.

Basically, it's a bug, Apple knows about it, they are working on a fix and hopefully we'll stop seeing this irritating update in a couple of days

I can add my system to the list, perhaps. My Mac has been showing me the HP Printer Software Update 2.16.1 since I installed Mavericks, and it has been installed a few times too. It shows having been Updated in Last 30 Days on Oct 24 (twice), Oct 26, Oct 27, and Nov 3.

At the bottom there is a notice: "Use of this pre-release software is subject to the software license agreement for Apple Confidential OS X Pre-Release Seed Updates presented upon installation of the OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility."

So in my case, I assume I must have installed the OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility at some point. Also I am a paying member of the Mac developer program, so that is probably related. From what I can glean on the interwebs the Seed Configuration Utility might have come as part of a 10.8.3 (or later) seed release.

If these are in fact different developer seed releases, the solution is to show this data, the build number, in the item details in the Software Updates list. Then it's clear they're not the same items being installed repeatedly. They could even be colored purple to differentiate them from public releases. Color cues are great for this kind of thing.

I'll add myself to this list of multiple duplicates of HP printer software updates in the appstore for latest version. It's now done a total of 5 duplicate "updates". I've left-clicked the darn update to "hide" it...but this is a really stupid issue that I think Apple can probably solve easily. FWIW, HP support is of no help at all...not sure what to do but it's very annoying and takin up precious little space left on my mbp!😢
