Mavericks Dock: Change color

The new bright side dock in mavericks is ugly and hard for the eye. There MUST be a solution to change the white background to something more easy for the eye.

(I don't mention the new ugly calendar and contacts because I hardly use them, but the new Apple Design Team seems to think that white is a reasonable color for an app background - they are obviously wrong) 😮

It's a shame they did that to the dock. It almost seems they sometimes try to see how far they can push their base before they jump ship. I'll keep mine hidden until some good person comes forward with a crack to make it transparent like I've always had it. I couldn't really find where Apple has addressed this issue at all. There have been hundreds, probably thousands of comments on the new Apple Dock's ugliness. Arrogance goes before a stock fall.

I think I have a temporary solution for everybody that has his Dock connected to the bottom. I just replaced the 'shimmers' (is that the right word?!) with my own design! At least it's more visible which apps are open.

  1. It's very easy. Download the Bar or the Triangle. (2 png's)
  2. Go to the System folder -> Library -> CoreServices -> Dock.
  3. On Docks right mouseclick "Show package contents" and navigate to Contents -> Resources.
  4. Make a copy of the 'indicator_medium.png' and 'indicator_medium@2x.png' to a different location.
  5. Copy the 2 png files to that location (identity controle window pops up)
  6. DONE!

Somone wanted me to post my dock after the command line solution I posted earlier in this thread. Here is is (click to view larger). Note that after doing the transparent dock change, and a dark background, I can see the open app icons quite well. I'm not saying I don't want the dock returned to it's previous state, but at least this works for me right now.

Me too think that the background in a vertically placed dock looks horrible. One option would have been to turn the hiding of the dock on (not having to stare in the ugly white). However, the speed with what the dock show when moving the mouse pointer on the left of the screen is... well, super slow. If there was an option to remove the sliding animation I might consider having the dock hidden and show itself when I needed an app's attention.

And yes, I've tried Quicksilver/Alfred/etc. Not working for me. I'm a visual guy who need the iconography to quickly start an app.

Have anyone tried DragThing under Maverick? I used that extensively in the MacOS 8/9-days.

TinkerTool does this. I have the dock on auto-hide, no animation (snaps in/out immediately) and in the lower-left.
