What has been lost in Numbers 3.0 upgrade?

Has anyone got a list of features that has been lost in the new version of Numbers?

I am aware (and disappointed) that the useful Categories feature has gone (I have requested this feature back on relevant Apple page). I think I also saw that Print view had disappeared.

What else has gone? I make extensive use of filtering and sorting - if those features have been watered down then I think I may not bother updataing.

Thanks in advance,

Simon.

SJ,

Here's my list as of 10:30 EDT:

Function or feature or issue

Reorganize Panel gone

Categories View gone

References now don’t follow sorted rows as they did before. (Now like Excel)

Table Fills not supported

German user can’t use decimal point from numeric keypad.

Split Cells is gone

Sheet View seems to be the only view available during editing. Page view only available in the Print dialog.

Page Headers and Footers are gone

Edit Toolbar (add, delete, rearrange tool icons) is gone.

That's it from here at this time, but I think I have just scratched the surface. Would love to hear from others who are keeping a list.

SJ,

I've made a few corrections and additions to the list since I last posted it. The most recent item to come to my attention is the elimination of Mark for Move and Move in the Edit menu.

In the past day or two the rate of discovery of "features gone missing" has slowed to a crawl and I must say that I've become a bit more comfortable with V3. You know, Necessity being the Mother of Invention as it is. Wait, maybe I'm just numb...

Here's the latest update...

J.

Function or feature or issue

  • Applescript support seems to have been reduced; Applescript Dictionary for Numbers 3.0 hasn't been found, many Numbers 2.3 scripts don't work, but some scripts do work with Numbers 3.0
  • Can’t open Numbers 08 documents
  • Categories View gone
  • Cell border custom line weight is sometimes lost when using Filter Rows
  • Charted Dates don’t display properly when used as X-Axis values - hope this is just a bug
  • Comments can’t be repositioned
  • Comments can’t be resized
  • Comments only display as Tool Tips now, can’t be static displays
  • Contacts; Drag and Drop into Numbers from Contacts no longer supported
  • CSV file import seems to be limited to dragging a CSV file to the Numbers Dock Icon. Pasting to a table or the canvas is gone
  • Custom Formats gone
  • Share Menu is gone, and Export to PDF not longer has the option to make a PDF in Sheet View mode with no page breaks.
  • Find and Replace Results Pane is gone - was a great navigation tool
  • Formula Bar is gone, replaced by a field at the bottom of the Numbers window in which the expression is displayed but can not be edited
  • Formulas and Functions user guide PDF, easily searchable, is gone, replaced by web help page
  • Graphics Inspector no longer treats a Table as an Object that can be formatted by the Graphics Inspector tools. Or, looking at it from the Table perspective, there is no way to add Shadow effect to a Table’s outline.
  • Insert > Date and Time is gone
  • Keyboard Shortcut reminders have been removed from Drop-Down Row and Column menus
  • Move and Mark for Move are gone from the Edit Menu
  • Numbers User Guide PDF is gone, replaced by web help page
  • Page Headers and Footers are gone
  • Page Margins can’t be adjusted
  • Print Preview view not available while editing
  • Pop-Up Menu Format no longer expands with a click of the Spacebar
  • QFX Financial File Exchange, bank and brokerage files, import is no longer supported
  • Reorganize Panel gone, no multi-level sort.
  • Return key option to set the behavior while editing a cell is gone
  • Show Autocompletion List in Table Columns is gone
  • Sort Selected Rows is gone
  • Sorting detector now stops cell references from following the sort movement. This loss a PLUS.
  • Split Cells is gone
  • Table Fills are not supported (that's in the table background, not the cell backgrounds)
  • Toolbar Editor(add, delete, rearrange tool icons) is gone.

Wow. Numbers was well on it's way to becoming a serious business app, we use it all the time in our day to day work. But now? If they don't fix these missing features, we'll be limited to the old versions or switch over to Microsoft. Ugh.

Many of Apple's design choices of late with its mobile/desktop software seem to be made in a vacuum, with little regard to prior functionality, actual user needs or competitive concerns.

I am just flat-out angry about this ...

I have spent the last year, transition my business to All Things Mac, with MS Office being the last to go (switch from Word to Pages, from Excel to Numbers, from Powerpoint to Keynote). This was a commitment on my part, not merely because I was already competent on MS Office, but because most of my clients use MS Office. I was (and at least currently remain) "all in." I have to imagine that is how Apple executives and employees and shareholders wanted it ... Loved the hardware, stayed for the software.

So what in the world IS this? It is not an upgrade ... The new iWorks software is a DOWNGRADE. It is less useful, less intuitive, and less effective than the prior iWorks. If I did not know better, I would think that Apple was trying to destroy these products and discourage customers from using it.

It is bad, pathetic really, that the only "good news" in this entire debacle is that I was able to remove Numbers 3.0 and open my prior Numbers ... I breathed a giant sigh of relief to see my templates (with headers and sideview on all sheets and so one). Apple, you blew it. Read this customer's list and GET BACK TO WORK.

Numbers 3 Sorting Ascend/Descend: this function does not work when sorting a column that contains data drawn from a row in another table.

Are you sure about this?

Table 1 here is drawing data from data in table 2:

User uploaded file

I sort:

User uploaded file

This is the result:

User uploaded file

And if you've got cells with relative references, sorting now seems to behave exactly like Excel.

Agree that your example works but that is only sorting in columns across tables. I am totalling across a table so the totals appear in a row. I am then setting up a second table where the totals are listed by referencing the relevant cell so the totals appear in a column which I then wish to rank. This worked fine in previous numbers but fails in numbers 3
