What has been lost in Numbers 3.0 upgrade?

Has anyone got a list of features that has been lost in the new version of Numbers?

I am aware (and disappointed) that the useful Categories feature has gone (I have requested this feature back on relevant Apple page). I think I also saw that Print view had disappeared.

What else has gone? I make extensive use of filtering and sorting - if those features have been watered down then I think I may not bother updataing.

Thanks in advance,

Simon.

SJ,

Here's my list as of 10:30 EDT:

Function or feature or issue

Reorganize Panel gone

Categories View gone

References now don’t follow sorted rows as they did before. (Now like Excel)

Table Fills not supported

German user can’t use decimal point from numeric keypad.

Split Cells is gone

Sheet View seems to be the only view available during editing. Page view only available in the Print dialog.

Page Headers and Footers are gone

Edit Toolbar (add, delete, rearrange tool icons) is gone.

That's it from here at this time, but I think I have just scratched the surface. Would love to hear from others who are keeping a list.

Hard to say without specifics. Pivot tables can be really convenient to extract and display data.

But I understand the sorting behavior in Numbers 3 is closer to Excel than the old Numbers was. So if you're having a problem with sorting in Numbers 3 the chances are you will see the same behavior in Excel too, which may not be what you want.

How to get back all the features of Pages 4.3

Go to Finder -> Applications.

Check if folder iWork ’09 is present and it has underneath it Numbers.app, Numbers.app and Pages.app

Before starting these apps take note that you will be asked to update them, do not do this.

If you start them you should find that they are version 4.3 for Pages, Numbers 2.3, Numbers 5.3.

So you are almost good to go, al the features that have been deleted in the new version are restored.

To prevent accidentally starting the wrong version it is best to delete the new version, you will keep a version in the app store.

If you can’t find all these files, the .app files are the ones that matter.

Adding to the list :

  • self-referential cell no longer allowed - for example : A1 = some_to_other_cell / NBVAL(A1:A10 )
  • don't know the exact translation : mark a row / column to be moved ( cmd-shift-X / cmd-shift-V ) ...still possible via drag and drop, but not via menu or keyboard shortcut => slow on the same page, impossible between pages.
  • page / tables navigation - was super useful to reorganise tables between pages + to simply comprehend the logic of the documents - now hidden in the navigation menu at the top.
  • list of formulas in a given page...come in handy when analysing complex tables

Missing Features :

  • a context panel for formulas ( as the format / filter panel [ inspector ] ) or a magic key : This one of the strength of Numbers - rapidly visualizing on what cells the current one depends on => it could be nice to have the reverse : highlight the cells that depends on the current one ( ? option clicking on the current cell would dim “ancestors” and highlight “descendants” ? ) + a clickable list of ancestors / descendants on the right panel when a new “formula inspector” is chosen.
  • cells in formula bar should a least be clickable to allow a quicker navigation between cells
  • with the format inspector / panel shown, clicking on a function name in a formula should select this function in the function list and not the ABS function.

Conditional Highlighting Rules have been changed. In iWork '09 I was able to add highlighting rules on the condition of another cell's contents, now I can only add rules for the current selected cell's contents.

Jacob, it works for me. When you click inside the field to enter your criteria, click on the little blue button to the right. Then you can select a cell. However, you can't enter formulas.

One addition that I haven't seen mentioned (though, in fairness, I also haven't read all nine pages):

Numbers 2.3 had a feature I *loved* that let you use formulas to define the range for a chart. I used this on several charts in my biggest spreadsheet that were pulling data from the same table - one chart looked at a number of variables by month, another by season, and another by year. You could set the X-axis values by something using an INDIRECT formula and reference rows corresponding to the first and last dates for that range. It was awesome, and very useful.

I dont know why they would have taken it away - it wasnt a feature that "confusing" to your average user, because unless you spontaneously decided to try programming the chart you wouldnt even see it was there. But in it's absence, I've had to create three copies of the table referenced, which is quite frustrating.
