How can I change the login screen background on Mavericks?

How can I change the login screen background on Mavericks?

None of the old tools such as Onyx or Loginox have been updated, and none of the previous manual methods of performing this seem to be working for me either.

The image files for those are in the same folder as the Apple logo files we're replacing. To find out were to put them I took a screenshot of the login screen. To do that simply login and while it's still loading you quickly hold down shift+command and press 3 several times untill you hear the sound of a shutter. Then you can find the screenshot(s) on your desktop. When putting the screenshot into your image editing program, remember that the Apple logo has to be exactly in the middle and then you can put the buttons where you see them on the screenshot.

Good info indeed Many thanks. I successfully completed all steps, but have noticed an annoying quirk (?) and wondering if anyone has seen this... if I enable the Guest User account, or create any other account, and in setup preferences I have the default List Users checked, I end up *losing* the icons for the users -- hope this makes sense -- former Windows guy making this transition ;-). This doesn't happen, of course, if I only have myself as the one user, and my smiling faceshot icon shows perfectly. (With the guest account enabled, I see just the generic icon and boxes for name and password beneath.)

This wasn't an issue when I used Logonix before. What might be happening?

Thanks,

D.

Having read the thread, I have Maverick on a MacBook and agree - the custom grey background is not pleasing to the eye.

I wonder, if Apple read these forums, if they will perhaps emulate Windows 8/8.1 in being able to do this.

Yes, I have the ability to modify the files, but really it should be a customisable option.

And to be honest I cannot be bothered as the Mac is working brilliantly after I fitted a Crucial 500GB SSD into it.

Yeah it would be! Same here, I have Photoshop and know how to use it, but I don't really know how to reset all of the bottom buttons and the Apple logo to fit my own resolution. Because not only does the white background and the desktop background layers change with my resolution, obviously if they get bigger, the logo and the buttons layers must get bigger too speaking of resolution. But I can't quite figure out how much bigger they must get, proportionally, I mean in regards to everything else, and also how to really position them properly at that point. Don't know, it's kinda complicated. I can change the white layer and the wallpaper layer, to fit my screen, but as said the rest remains smaller, fitting the smaller resolution that Kcasper provided for his own screen. Sigh... Hope he can help us.

I have now made a template for 1920x1200 and also a better template for 1280x800. Put your picture in the bottom left, choose what version of the Apple logo you want (if you want any) and export as .png. You only need to replace the files "apple_s1.png" and "apple_s1@2x.png". Hope it works and tell me if it doesn't.

Thanks all around for your good work! I noticed a downside of using a higher image than the actual background. When (re)starting there’s a slide-in animation that causes the white/transparent part of the image to be displayed shortly. It’s a minor inconvience I got around using a picture that was higher than needed.

Also, since I am working on a MBA I thought I’d share the 1440px resolution file (based upon @Kcasper’s work. Please mind that the PSD is only an export of the 'original' is Pixelmator file:

Here’s one last trick and then I’ll call it a day:

Instead of exporting PNG’s, just create a JPG (adjust the quality for filesize reductions) and rename it to 'apple***.png'.

OS X will try to open the file as an image - no matter what image type you use. This saved me 1.3 MB compared to the much larger PNG. I am not aware of any caveat to this method. If anyone knows, please share.

I have my initial Boot Logo changed successfully thanks to BootXChanger and my Login Screen changed thanks to Konrad on this post. However just before the login screen appears or just before the Desktop appears (if login is set to auto) I get the original Grey Apple Desktop and Logo appear for a brief second. This is rather anyoning as everything else is working so well. I have given up trying to fine the solution .. hopefully there is someone out there who can solve this? (Using OS X 10.9 on a new 2013 Mac).

How can I change the login screen background on Mavericks?
