Oh it was far from perfect even in the old version. Let's say you're building a sequence with items coming in and out in several waves to build a 30 second sequence. You want staggered intros (or whatever) and you want these to overlap the in and out builds of the subsequent wave of items. With a timeline approach, you'd visually SEE not only the individual elements, but how long each runs, the delays for each and how long the builds would take. You'd be able to edit ALL THESE VARIABLES by simply click and dragging that element's "timeline" either for movement along the timline or shortening/lengthening it for duration. It's would make Keynote an actual competitor to Motion for doing linear animations. The build list has always seemed like a rudimentary and unfinished solution to this.

I'm so dissappointed with the new Keynote, I had a presentation ready in KN 09 and I upgraded to KN 13, and the theme I used doesn't exist anymore so I open my presentation, the app crashed, any my presentation was deleted, forever, I've tried everything to find it. it was saved to iCloud so it also got deleted from my Mac. I had to do it all over again.

I have learned to distrust any updates from Apple, and waited to find out what people thought about the new iWork. The only application I really count on is Keynote, and it's the main reason I moved to the Mac. Reading this thread, I think I'll stick with my old version, thankyouverymuch.

Remember when Apple was making fun of Microsoft for thinking that mobile and desktop/laptop computing platforms were interchangeable? Well... What do we have here?

Do you know how many presentation pros I know who use Google Docs, Office365, or iClod? None. Zero. It's a useless feature that no one wants. In fact, I don't even know anyone who has figured out how to get iClod to do anything useful, since it hides everything in an invisible folder. Everyone, everyone I work with uses Dropbox.

Apple's drive to iOS-ify everything is driving me off the platform. Win8 is a crime against humanity, though, so I'm looking hard at Linux. I am sick to death of having to pretend that my $3000 computer is a frickin' cell phone.

In Keynote 09 you could re-arrange the presenter view to expand notes. My custom display has notes taking up the entire right half of the screen, where all the notes for a slide can be easily seen at one time. The left top had the current slide and the left-bottom had the next slide/build. I'd really like that feature in the new version because notes ARE less useful at this point.

Wow. I had never checked out customize presenter view. Here I've been scrolling around for the last four years of using Keynote in my lectures.

Maybe this whole debacle is useful for learning all the cool features of Keynote '09 that we never realized we had until they were taken away 🙂

I like your review. Thanks for sharing. Like you, I use Keynote on a daily basis (almost), and I'm so disappointed with the new Keynote. I was so eager that they finally updated it, when i watched the Keynote.

Why doesn't Apple get it that some work can't be done on an i-Device. I would never type in a 3000 words assignment on Pages for iPad. it lacks tactile feedback. Similarly, I don't want to use Keynote for iOS because it lacks precision & features. Actually, I bought keynote for iOS only to TEST keynotes that I have designed on the Mac, to make sure my clients have a flawless experience (remember: when you export a keynote from Mac to iOS, many things change. Fonts is agreeable. But object placement isn't!).

Great blog Jeroenpaco,

I am enjoying the portability of Keynote for iOS as it is so mcuh easier to carry an ipad around rather than the laptop (when you are carrying loads of other resources for Primary School children, this is an issue). I can feel the pain of many users and for the moment I may continue to design in Keynote 09 and then convert for the iPad.

One thing I am really missing is the centred rulers - in other words the rulers having 0 in the centre, 12.something means nothing to me.

Thanks for compling the list - I look forward to the update.
