I have a LaserJet 4000DN. Its an awesome postscript networked printer. I have not replaced the toner in two years, despite heavy use. I don't want to replace it. It works perfectly.
After upgrading to Mavericks, when I went to add the HP4000, the system wanted to install a generic print driver.
I googled "HP LaserJet 4000 driver for OS X 10.9" which pointed to this link to older software (OS X 10.5) on the HP website.
I downloaded a DMG file at that link titled HP_LaserJet_and_Edgeline_print-only.dmg
I ran the downloaded installer.
I again tried to add the printer, now displayed as "HP LaserJet 4000" in the pop-up list where previously only the choice 'Generic' was displayed.
I was warned that the installation 'needed repair' so I allowed the repair to proceed. This concluded successfully and the printer was added to my printer settings.
When I chose the "File->Print" menu option (from Firefox as a test), one of the pop-up menu options displayed in the same pop-up menu as Layout displayed HPPostscriptPDE with a strike-through.
Choosing this displays "The bundle couldn't be loaded because it doesn't contain a version for for the current archetecture".
The pop-up menu option "Printer Features" displayed my usual assortment of printer-specific options when I selected the additional pop-up menu option "Feature Sets->General 2".
Choosing (for example) ProRes 1200 and Resolution Enhancement: Dark worked perfectly. PROBLEM SOLVED. Your milage may vary.
I'm saving / backing up the printer driver, because these things have a tendency to disappear from the HP website.
