Unable to connect to network printer

After installing Mavericks i cannot print anymore on my network printer.

The printer has connected to a Windows XP pc, i see it under settings Windows printer but when i launch a print the printer goes into pause state. The message i see is "unable to connect to printer".

I had this connection since Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion and it has always worked.

Thanks Justin Etu, your recommendation completely solved my problem after trying many other solutions. Good thing as I was just about to drop a bunch of cash on a network printer and airport express.

A few background details that may be helpful for someone else are:

Brother printer HL-2140 connected via USB to desktop running Windows XP Home

Macbook Pro, OS Mavericks

D-Link Router DIR 655

Thanks again Justin! 😉

I have a printer connected to my Windows XP desktop via USB. In the past (pre-Mavericks) I could print from my MBP to the printer wirelessly using an internet connection. My printer is technically not a wireless printer btw.

Post-Mavericks, I received the communication error and the hold for authentication message. I downloaded the new driver for my printer (Brother HL-2140). Nothing worked. Contacted Brother and the rep told me to download the drivers and that this printer could only be used via a wired connection...

I followed Justin Etu's recommendation on pg 3 of this thread despite having only 1 printer. The magic was the ip address of the desktop computer AND the share name of the printer connected to the desktop. Once again I am able to print wirelessly from my MBP to the "non-network" laser printer.

For anyone facing the "Printer is in use" issue after adding it using LPD/LPR, the cause of this problem is that Unix Printing service is not installed in Windows XP.

You can do that by going to "Add/Remove Programs" -> Add/Remove Windows Features (something like that) and then Checking the option that has to do with Networking/Printing (can remeber the exact name).

After that, everything works like a charm...

SQEEK's procedure on page 3 combined with specifying the Share name as the Queue name worked (even only having one printer, but having it set for sharing on Windows XP). I have XP Home edition so note that in SQEEK's procedure that refers to "Services" that this is in an Administrative Tools menu that is not visible by default in XP Home Edition (it can be added via custom settings on the Taskbar / Start Menu). The easiest way to access it is to Run "services.msc".
