I have met the same problem too!

Mine is also the new macbook pro Haswell.

I have been using my macbook for 2 days.

And I have encountered sudden freeze for 4 times!

The keyboard and the trackpad are unresponsive.

But actually the system is working and the apps are working.

And the power button can actually work.

So every time I met this problem,I long press the power button and make it restart.

And then everything is okay.

Somtimes ,if you wait for 10~15 min, the keyboard and the trackpad will start working again.

When the second time I met this problem, I decided to go to the apple store for help.

But after several mins, it works again.

It is very annoying that the system suddenly freeze when you are busy working on the documents.

And it causes damage that you force to shut down the macbook.

I think it is a software problem?

Hope Apple can release some updates to solve this problem soon!

I think we're all in agreement that this is a software bug in Mavericks. It's very annoying that after purchasing a very expensive laptop we're presented with a certain degree of dissatsfaction, but these things happen when new hardware/software is introduced.

What concerns me is that this was never picked up in any beta/pre-release testing. This seems to prompt the "we've never heard of that, or it's not in our database" response when contacting Apple. Thus the only help they can provide is the general scripted response of try resetting PRAM or SMC. We're talking about brand new MBP's developing this fault within minutes/hours out of the shrink wrapped box here. So I doubt very much this will or indeed should rectify the problem encountered (as proven by some of you already).

I urge you all to as a minimum contact Apple online to report this fault or better still, pick up the phone and call them. I'm sure their databases and awareness of this issue wil rise sufficiently. The more angry customers the quicker the fix I think.

I, like most of you, have purchased my MBP within the past few days, and indeed if this turns out not to be software related, then I will be returning it under the 14 day rule. Hence, we all need a satisfactory solution sooner rather than later.

I did have a look at the system.log of my 13" rMBP (bought 2 identical mid-range models last week), and the working one (not experiencing the issue during the time I used it, unlike the other one) indeed had the error but at times at wasn't in front of it (during the night, but it was awake probably on due to power nap).

I'll cancel my genius appointment for replacement for the time being, I hope Apple issues a fix in the 14 days return period (otherwhile I'll have it replaced).

I called Apple Support and was put through to the Senior Advisor. I explained to her the freezing issue we are all experiencing and mentioned that people are reporting the same issues on forum sites.

She said there is no record of this problem happening on their database but that she would pass this info onto the technical team.

I would suggest everyone here to call them and report the issue (1850 94 61 91). The more calls we make to them the better chance we have of them fixing this issue sooner rather then later.

She also asked me to send her links to the forums I was talking about so I emailed them to her as well as the MacRumors article.

She also said to perform any updates that show up in the App Store.

I have not experienced a freeze now for two days so mine could be fixed but I do not know for sure.

I'm a developer and have been using every beta seed of Mavericks, this error didn't happened until the GM release build 13A598 and app store release build 13A603. Those two releases also feels way more sluggish than previous beta seeds, especially iMessage takes one or two seconds to react when clicking on some emoji icons. Mid 2012 macbook pro retina.

And it's time for the update!

This is the issue-report so far!

So, what do we know as of now? It's specific to OSX Mavericks, and it affects all models of CPU.

Also, most users purchase a MacBook pro with the Base CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD.

It's roughtly equal for people buying in-store and online, and that No-one runs Windows on the rMBP Pro.

Here is the PR Releases so far on this issue:

CNet:

Owners of the new 13-inch Retina Display MacBook Pro already seem to be running into trouble with their machines.

Numerous people posting on Apple's Support Communities forum say that the keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive, causing the entire system to freeze. Resetting the Mac's System Management Controller (SMC) has no effect, say some. A couple of users claim that closing the lid for a minute or so and reopening it brings the trackpad back to life. Otherwise, shutting down the laptop through a hard reset appears to be the only way to recover from the lockup.

Launched last week, the new MacBook Pros are powered by Intel's Haswell processor. Based on the posts, it's unclear whether the problem is in the hardware or the software. However, some users report receiving the following error message: "The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)."

CNET contacted Apple for comment and will update the story with any further information.

According to users in a support thread spanning over 14 pages, the trackpad and the keyboard on the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro are reportedly locking up at random during use, with a hard reset through the machine's power button appearing to be the only present solution to the problem. Users are also reporting that a reset of the MacBook's System Management Controller (SMC) also appears to be ineffective, and a small surveyof users within the thread show that the problem is affecting all three configurations of the 13-inch model. Currently, it is unknown as to whether the freezes are a hardware or software problem, as Apple has not officially commented on the errors.

ProductReviews:

From reading the comments on Apple Discussions, it does not seem like an issue with the system at all, but rather a 2013 MacBook Pro problem with the keyboard, and in some instances the mouse as well. It is not known if it is a hardware or software problem, and Apple has yet to issue a statement

This has happened to me twice so far on a 13" haswell retina MBP. The only way for me to get the keyboard and mouse to work again is by closing the laptop, then opening it. Just pushing the power button to put it to sleep doesnt work. This is a pretty severe and common issue, and it is disgraceful that apple released 10.9 with a bug like this.

I'm just an Apple consumer just like you, but I sincerely hope you give the Mac a try longer than this issue that you are having right now. In technology, it seems like if you wait too long, you end up buying outdated hardware that soon gets a refresh, and if you upgrade too early, there are potential bugs that still have to be worked out. I'm sure Apple will have a fix out soon, and I'm sure you'll end up loving the machine once it starts working properly for you. My girlfriend is looking to buy the new Haswell Retina MacBook Pro and she may just wait until we hear word that this bug has been fixed. I hope it's fixed soon.
