I have met the same problem too!

Mine is also the new macbook pro Haswell.

I have been using my macbook for 2 days.

And I have encountered sudden freeze for 4 times!

The keyboard and the trackpad are unresponsive.

But actually the system is working and the apps are working.

And the power button can actually work.

So every time I met this problem,I long press the power button and make it restart.

And then everything is okay.

Somtimes ,if you wait for 10~15 min, the keyboard and the trackpad will start working again.

When the second time I met this problem, I decided to go to the apple store for help.

But after several mins, it works again.

It is very annoying that the system suddenly freeze when you are busy working on the documents.

And it causes damage that you force to shut down the macbook.

I think it is a software problem?

Hope Apple can release some updates to solve this problem soon!

This is anecdotal for now, but I'm no longer getting the random lockups (30+ hours of use since last one, which were previously every 2-3 hours), and my only change in behavior is switching from Chrome to Safari. While it seems unlikely to be an issue with Chrome, we can't rule it out right away.

In an effort to find a pattern, what browser is everyone using?

In addition to unresponsiveness of the keyboard/trackpad, I had the system power off for no reason. I thought it had just gone to sleep after some time of non-use, but it wouldn't "wake up" until I held down the power key and it rebooted (screen wouldn't come on at all).

It was confirmed that it was an unintended shut down as the dialog box popped up indicating this and asked if I wanted to send an error report to Apple.

Not thinking the frozen keyboard/trackpad is a hardware problem, but am concerned about a random shutoff/shutdown. I'm still in my 14 day exchange period. May exchange it just to play it safe.

Glad I saw this thread was happening. I have news for you guys, I have a brand new iMac that worked perfectly - until I put Mavericks on it. Now I get random lockups the same as you guys. I can tell that the machine is still running, it's just that the inputs have frozen, including the Bluetooth trackpad and keyboard that came with it. The only way to regain control is a reboot.

I want to emphasize that the machine worked perfectly until I installed Mavericks. I believe that this is a software problem and that the new iMacs also suffer from this bug.

this problem is Not unique to recent MBP's.

i've experienced identical symptoms repeatedly on my 15" mid-2007 MBP Core 2 Duo with 6g, which was upgraded from 10.7.5 via the App Store.

over the days since the Mavericks release, i've run many experiments, stripping out startup items, etc, with no change. however, it Does seem somehow related to sleep, in that it has happened 3-4x immediately after wake from sleep, and yesterday i ran for several hours without it crashing, during which i did not allow it to sleep.

i've taken to shutting the machine down if i'm going to be away for a few hours, instead of sleeping it, and not allowing it to sleep in other situations, and thus far that seems to be working.

i've started an additional thread to explore the situation for older machines like mine:

I also had this issue on Macbook Pro 13" 2009 after upgrading to Mavericks 10.9 and installing Win 7 and Win 8 via parallels 9. After wiping the machine and reverting to Mountain Lion 10.8.x it seemed to be ok until I reinstalled Win 8 via Parallels 9 and it happened one more time. Much better then Mavericks 10.9, but still a problem. I also have a SSD installed. Could it be a partition handling issue

Has anyone experienced this using a regular hard drive?

It certainly not isolated to the latest MBP retina. I have a 15" MBP retina 2012 and its the same. Random input lock up, nothing works (keyboard, trackpad, bluetooth track pad etc). You have to resort to a forced reboot (hold power key)

On reboot you also get the screen ghost/burn of the frozen screen shadowed behind the log in screen, is fine after 20/30 secs.

It's a PITA to be honest.

Using Safari here. Same experience as most others. The issue has happened multiple times over 2 days of ownership, each time I was doing something different (in terms of application use).

As an aside, I have a 2012 15" rMBP that has run every developer build of Mavericks and now runs 10.9 (13A603) and has never exhibited this issue.

That, to me, suggests that it's either 1) an issue unique to the new processor line or 2) an issue with the combination of Mavericks and the new processor.

I've reverted back to using my 15" rMBP for now and will keep an eye on this thread whilst deciding whether to return the 13". Disappointing.
