Can't Scroll In Mail after Mavericks update
Scrolling up or down in Mac Mail is not working - very odd.
Scrolling in all other apps is fine, however.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Thank you MightyMagpie! I've tried everything in this forum, scrolling down through all the pages from the top and nothing worked until I got to your post. Changing the mouse settings (which also made the most sense) worked!!
Force quit mail worked for me!
I have confirmed the setting in preferences, general to "always show scroll bars" is also only temporary. Only setting "scroll with inertia" in preferences, accessibility makes mail scrolling always OK.
I concur. I tried every possible fix (file deletions, etc.) and only setting "scrolling with inertia" works. Not sure what this is doing. Still means something not correct with Mavericks. Perhaps someday Apple will officially fix.
After waiting for months for apple to fix this issue I am here for help. What I have been doing is, when mail scrolling freezes I move my curser over to the scroll bar, tap it or manually scroll the bar with it and that unfreezes it. Sometimes for my whole session sometimes not. I know it's a pain in the *** but it's simple. I also noticed that I'm getting that "ghost scrolling" while on a web page that we used to have a couple years ago where the page will scroll down by its self maybe they're related. I'm using a wireless apple mouse as before.
I've been working with Apple support for several weeks, trying a number of things to fix this. Finally, we decided to use scrolling "with inertia." It fixed the problem and I have had no issue for a few days now. Go to system preferences, accessibility, mouse & trackpad, mouse options, select "with Inertia." I understand that the factory settings are "with inertia" so I must have changed it over the last couple of years.
Did Apple explain why scrolling with inertia fixes the issue? I cannot understand from a technical point of view what this is doing or why this issue only with Mavericks. I would like Apple to agee it is an issue and address it with a fix in the next OS release.
This worked for me. Thanks! How do I give you points?
SKTucson, you just did.
Tbirdvet, I think the advisors do agree that there is a problem. But, here's what happened next. After changing to inertia per the instrution of the Apple advisor, my mail was scrolling as normal. He called back to check a couple of days later and asked me to I take off inertia to see what happes. It worked fine for a few days and then stopped scrolling this evening. I put it back on inertia and it is fine at the moment.
I think you, and everyone, should send and email to Advisor Eric or Senior Advisor Ed . I have talked to them a dozen or more times and they are very concerned about the issue.
I am going to email Eric to let him know what is happening now.
Thanks to everyone for working on this.

I have tried with inertia but the issue still remains on both my iMac and MacBook Pro. Super frustrating and killing productivity.
Smooter: You are the first person that the "scrolling with inertia" setting did not resolve the issue. Are you using a Magic Mouse with your iMac? I assume you are making this setting in the accessibility pane, correct?
tbirdvet: I am using a Magic Mouse with my iMac. "Scroll with inertia" was turned on when I was having the problem and I turned it off, then back on. Still persists.
On my MBP I can use my track pad to scroll in gmail from the web, any document, but when it comes to mail the only way I can ascend or descend in a message or through my message stack is by using the arrow keys. When I turn off scrolling all together it allows for me to utilize the click and drag method on the "scroll bar" but other than that, two finger scrolling is dead to me in apple mail with Mavericks.
This worked for me. Did it 3 days ago and no problems since then. Thanks
Sorry it took awhile to get back to you. Thanks for the tip. I haven't had a problem since I tried it!
Ed, a Senior Advisor from Apple support, called me yesterday. He said that engineering has acknowledged that there is a problem and has taken over from him. He also said there will probably be a fix in a future software update.
