Anyone getting graphics corruption in OSX Mavericks?

Having performed the upgrade, I am finding the toolbar at the top of the screen is occassionally becoming corrupted/scrambled. I've also noted the same scrambled pixels at the side of Safari and Mail windows.

Anyone else experienced this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Tricky, I spoke too soon. Apparently the nasty "Energy Saver/automatic graphics switching" was ON again. YIKES! I don't know how this happened. I did reboot at some point, so maybe the preference isn't saved across reboots, but that seems weird. Incidentally, this preference is not present in Mountain Lion.

So I am becoming convinced it really is this nasty preference causing the trouble. I will plug away with Mavericks some more and try and figure out what causes this pref to turn itself on.

I have been posting about the same issue here - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5506163?start=0&tstart=0

I went to the apple store jsut last week. They ran diagnostics on my MBP. No issues in the general test. Then they ran a test that took about 15 minutes that focused on my GPU, as that is the most likely faulty component considering the shadow rendering issue. My computer passed that with flying colors as well.

Apple genius said that they could keep it for a 24 hour more intesive diagnostic test, but his suggestion was to take it home and erase/reinstall mavericks and see if that fixed the issue. I did that. Cleared whole system. Left all data and settings on my backup drive.

After a fresh install it happened again within 6 hours. Boo.

I hope for a software update that addresses this. I fear that it is an issue with the GPU in our MBP's. There are other threads that suggest that might be the case and our GPU's have trouble handling the more intensive graphics in Mavericks. Come on Apple. Please step up and address this as a known issue.

Did you try turning off the "Energy Saver/Automatic graphics switching" preference (see jvinegar posts). I am completely convinced that this is the problem. I have been garble free whenever this is off, and I get garble promply when it is on. Someone at Apple must know this is the problem. Maybe not enough users are affected to command a fix. But in any case, this preferences was not available on previous MacOS, Mountain Lion, so nothing is lost just by turning it off.

Of course, if this DOESN'T work for you, I would really like to know that too. Maybe there are multiple failure points.

Since making my original post about the screen corruption (see above link) I have followed a number of similar posts by people experiencing the identical problem. My conclusion is this is a problem which Apple will have to provide a solution for. Whether a patch or update or what - it is wasting peoples time to ask them to attend a Genius appointment or to reinstall Mavericks. The online evidence is that neither of these actions has provided a permanent solution.

The most likely problem area - as detailed by Frank23456 :https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5493333?answerId=24085505022#24085505022&ac_cid=tw123456#24085505

I have done this with, so far, success. I have also installed 8GB of memory, replacing the original 4GB.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed - but please, come on Apple, this is not the time to go silent on a problem causing so many users grief.

I have also the same problem of pixelated screen from time to time. I have a MacBook Pro 13 inches (Mid 2010) with NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB GPU on it. First this problem occured, after one year I purchased the MBP. After I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, I started having this problem. I did not have AppleCare, but I contacted with AppleCare on phone. They wanted me to email them the screen copy of pixelated screen, and which I did. Even though my warranty was expired one month ago. They decided to change my Logic Board of my MBP for free. I sent my MBP to them and they changed Logic Board. At the beginning, I did not have this problem, but after few months, the problem started happening again but less frequently. After 2 years, they changed my Logic Board, I am still having this pixelated screen problem every 2 weeks or so, usually on Safari screen. I also think that the problem is software related and not a hardware problem. This problem is so annoying that I want to buy new Apple product but I can't afford. I also hope that Apple will soon address this issue with an update or so.

Hi everyone,

I cured a myriad of problems with Mavericks, including performance degradation and the graphics issues by doing a complete erase and reinstall. BUT NOTE, I did a complete back up to an external hard drive first and i'm glad I did as an attempted restore from Time Machine failed mid-way through.

My mid 2010 17" MacBook Pro is now working beautifully again without any issues and Time Machine has made new back-ups without problems.

Hi everyone,

I should add that I've migrated from machine to machine over a number of years and I wonder if this is somehow linked to the graphics and performance problems?

It seems a little odd that doing an erase and reinstall has cured everything but my MacBook was running so poorly with frequent spinning beachballs that it had become unusable before I did so.

Same problems here on Mid-2013 MBP 15" with 2.66 i7 (6,2). The weird colored lines and distortion most evident with the widgets, but it just started happening with the notification pop-ups. Before all that, I was noticing some strange distortions and disappearing with the menu bar. Just noticed some odd black lines around the "About This Mac" window when i open it where the shadow should be.

From reading through the comments, it seems that a PRAM resent won't do the trick. And this just started happening when I switched over to Mavericks... everything was fine on Mountain Lion.

So has anyone determined if this is a hardware or software problem?

Frank - I followed your solution at the time you suggested turning off AGS in the Energy Saver preference panel.

As this is now some while ago and I have not (touch wood) had the problem occur since I think I can thank you for your insight!

However, in an earlier post I also mentioned that I had installed 8GB of memory (from the original 4GB) - this at the same time as following your advice. I actually did this because - as a designer - some of my programs were running sluggishly. But I do wonder if the extra power also helps keep the high definition display on track?

I remain convinced that Apple needs to address the problem.
