New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes

Same issues here - retina MBP 15" late 2013 running Mavericks, it seems to randomly restarts while the machine is sleeping so far only when connected to USB external Seagate HDDs, I know the drive is just fine because it works with no issues on my Mac Mini running Mt Lion... I had my machine replaced at the Apple store, been on the phone with tech support and senior tech support several times, no one has no clue whats going on, I reinstalled the OS, passed the hardware test, and now I'm waiting for Apple to get back with me after I provided them the capture data from my machine including the Sleep Wake Failure report. Its very frustrating because I have several of these hard drives that I want to keep connected to my machine and wouldn't like to keep the machine on all the time. This machine is screeming fast compared to my MBP mid 2010 but considering that I spent almonst $3K on it you would think that at least the software will be free of major bugs, I guess I should consider myself lucky for not loosing all my data like some other users reported😮 Hoping for Apple update to resolve the issue soon!!

I got my late 2013 15" retina MBP to stop doing this by unchecking off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" in the energy saver preferences screen.

I just tried this today but unfortunately it still did another random reboot on a "sleep wake failure". When I checked on it a bit later and woke it from sleep manually, there wasn't the usual message displayed to notify me of the failure. (I heard it reboot itself from the other room.) But when I launched the Console app and looked in System Diagnostic Reports, I found the "sleep wake failure" report with a timestamp corresponding to the reboot I heard earlier.

So... turning off "put hard disks to sleep when possible" didn't work for me. Anyway, the only thing that has worked is to not leave any external drives connected when I put it to sleep. Which of course is both inconvenient and unacceptable.

Have you tried unchecking the power nap function as I mentioned many days before?

Since then I had not a single reboot from sleep!

Oh heck, I was mistaken. There was a message as usual. It was just hidden behind many windows.

Yeah, I tried unchecking Power Nap. Didn't help. In fact, it was still off when I tried this more recent test with the "put hard disks to sleep" option. Only thing that has avoided the failure is disconnecting my external drive before putting the MacBook Pro to sleep.

This Sleep/Wake failure is actually affecting other applications as well...at least the problems that I am getting seem to relate to this issue...

I am a DJ and it affects my applications/usb controllers. As you can imagine, it's a REALLY BIG PROBLEM when you are at a club playing music and the music randomly stops. Oh the boo's I would receive...good thing I've test all these nuances before my gig tonight...Details below:

I DJ using Traktor Pro 2 (a Djing program) and if I have my Western Digital external hard drive in, or if I plug in my DJ controller (Kontrol S4) through a USB hub, my computer will freeze in the middle of the set. The midi data feeding to my controller via USB also stops which also cuts the music. What's strange about this freeze is that the DJ program will still be running, but I will be unable to move my mouse (even via the touchpad). I know the computer is still responsive however because when pressing down the power button, the computer will ask me what I want to do (Shut down, Restart), however I will be unable to choose an option because I can't move my mouse and the enter button is unresponsive so I have to force shutdown by continuing to hold the power button.

What's weird...or maybe not so weird...is that even when I have my external hard drive plugged in on one USB port, and the DJ controller on the USB port (not using the USB hub at all), the freeze still happens. If I don't have my USB hub or my external hard drive plugged in, at all, in any port, there are absolutely no problems.

So in order to "resolve" this issue I've had to move the music that I want to play on to my internal hard drive. That may not seem like a problem to some, but I have a HUGE music library in my external hard drive that I would want access to if I get idea's on the fly (while Djing). Also, in the future, I am going to need the USB hub to run multiple controllers so I need this to be fixed...having it not work now is fine but it really shouldn't be an issue in the first place.

I experienced the problem several times now on my non-retina MacBook Air 13" from 2011. I upgraded von Mountain Lion to Mavericks, too. Every morning when opening up my MacBook it appears as restarted with a Sleep Wake Failure report open that I always sent to Apple. What is worse is that multiple applciations are corrupted after each restart and I loose many settings. As for example I always have to reconfigure Chrome as everything is deleted. Some other applications state that they are corrupted and I need to redownload them from the MAS. But the worst thing that happened to me is that I nearly lost my DevonThink database from Dropbox as some files from my dropbox folder just got deleted. I can't fairly proof that the Sleep Wake Failure has to do with the latter one, but the timeframe fits perfectly.

I have the same problem in my new macbook pro 15 late 2013 buy in spain, only crashes when my external HD WD is connected in USB port, this HD WD need auxiliar power, with others external HD that do not need auxiliar power not happen, i think is a software problem, in my old macbook with mountain lion don´t crash in the same situation.

I resolved my problem -shutdowns instead of hibernate.

It was caused by rEFInd, an EFI Boot Manager (http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/) that prevented proper hibernation with its default installation.

By installing it on a separate partition instead of default on OS X Boot Volume, hibernation started working as it should. http://sourceforge.net/p/refind/discussion/general/thread/8bd60a7b/

I had a Haswell 13" rMBP 13" for a week or so before returning it and getting a loaded 15". The 13" did not reboot but the 15" does.

I have this problem too with my external WDs plugged in. Apple please patch it!!

I'm running late 2013 15" rMBP

I have the same problem with my apple USB to ethernet adapter plugged in. According to the log console, my computer has restarted 3 times during the night. This is a very fustrating issue. When I close the lid on my laptop and go do bed, I expect it to be right where I left off when I open it in the morning. I needs to be fixed. The error didn't occur before when peripherals weren't plugged into the USB port.

I am having this problem with my late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina running Mavericks with no USB devices installed and the only external dispay that I use is the Apple TV that I use. Are there any solutions found for this problem yet? I just bought this less than a week ago and I was thinking that I bought a defective computer. I've tried the Power Nap and put hard drives to sleep tips but still randomly while the lid is closed it will restart

I found that it is important to maintain the same power state (powered vs. battery) during the whole time the lid is closed. I can simply reproduce a Sleep Wake Failure when closing the lid of my MacBook Air 13" 2011 while powered, removing the power cord and reopening the lid. So a workaround is kinda making sure to always remove power before opening and closing the lid.
