Glad to hear I'm not the only one (although condolences for sharing my problem!). I'm wondering if there isn't a core setting in Mavericks to open whatever port is necessary (sorry, it's beyond my level of OS/networking expertise to know for sure); but if everything seems to be working, but it can't connect, that makes me think there must be a communication issue between the computer and the phone, outside of the Tether program itself.
btw, I'm using a 2013 1.7Ghz Macbook Air running OS 10.9.1, with Tether 2.1.0.3.
OK.. I was able to get it to work, John.. just found out earlier this morning. First, I had to make sure that my phone and my laptop were not connected to my wireless router. So, when I took the train into work, I was sure of that.
Next, I ran the Tether Launcher App from the MacBookPro. I ended up changing the name of the name of the Ad-hoc SSID by adding a '1' at the end of the name.. just to be sure it wasn't something cached or memorized by the iphone. (you probably don't need to do this.. just was taking an extra precaution).
So.. that part running... used tether.com on the iphone. It wouldn't connect until I went to settings and specified the adHoc WiFi network SSID. But after that.. I started seeing data being transferred in the window and I was able to connect.
Thanks, but I think you were just doing what Tether requires anyway... you can never connect unless you specify the adHoc network in Settings. But I've been doing that all along, and have tried "forget this network", changing the name and password, etc., nothing seems to work.
At this point I'm pretty sure that it's a setting on the computer that needs to be changed, since the phone connects to my old computer easily (which is running Mountain Lion).
Feel free to reach out to me via skype: gwexler2000 and we can do a screen share via skype or teamviewer and look into this together. I can't do it today because I'm leaving work soon to take the train back to Los Angeles. I'll be available this evening after 8pm PST or tomorrow morning. But if you'd like to connect via Skype now to establish contact records, I'm available to do that now.
This fix worked for me, but the connection is really slow. It's not even able to load gmail up. Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it? 🙂
I have experienced this as well when mobile bandwidth is slow. Gmail is fairly intense.
Both my iPhone and my iPad (using separate providers) seem to be getting great connections on their own, but when I tether my Mac to them, the connection is incredibly slow. I have tried everything that Tether.com has suggested for slow connections, but I don't even think that is the issue because this didn't start happening until I switched to Maverick.
Consider this thread as an opportunity to potentially diagnose. It could be related or coincidental in your case but worth a try since these individuals reported similar issues (Nov 2013 - Jan 2014):
Unfortunately, the issue is not just with gmail. It is with everything. Gmail was just an example.
I have tried closing all apps on my phone, as well as anything that could be running in the backgroud on the Mac, but the connection has still not improved.
a person over on the Tether site forums took your instructions, made the launcher app, & posted it for us to just simply download & use.
i did just that. i downloaded it, put it in my applications folder, & launched it and VIOLA!!!! everything worked for the first time since i installed mavericks.
YAY!!!! you guys are brilliant!
thank you!!!

I think step 8 should read "in step 6 above".
Worked like a charm! Thank you all so much. This has been plaguing me for months! Love Tether. Been using it for two years.
Figured out the fix! In the Applictions folder, right click (ctrl click) the tether icon and select "get info". In that screen check the box that says "prevent app nap". Do the same for the launcher and you'll be back to normal speeds! Been dealing with this issue for nearly a year and I just figured this out! Hope this helps!
Wow. Okay. That fixed everything. Thank you so much. I've been dealing with this for months.
I put together a package that has @skallal's solution already finished. Download it here by right-clicking, and then clicking "download as zip". Then uncompress it and run the launcher.
I tried Zinto Apps installer file and I'm still getting errors when running Tether app on Mavericks 10.9.1. Can't beleive this has been going on for months now and Tether still hasn't fixed the problem on their side... what a joke. Also, when you go to Tether.com's Knowledge Base forums there are no posts after 2012? And they make no mention of the Mavericks issues anywhere on their website site.
If anyone else has a solution or other steps to try let me know...
