How do I turn off the silence ? ( I do not want either always nor only while iPhone is locked).

How do you not silence the phone when it is locked. I settings/do not disturb, the only choices for silence: "always" or "only while iphone is locked". How do you keep the silent feature off when the phone is locked. I can not hear the ring....

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.3, new phone,,,, can't hear the ring

This always / only when phone is locked you are referring to.

It is only when the phone is in do not disturb mode.

So if you do not want eithe of the options and you want the phone to ring then take the do not disturb off. You will know it is do not disturb mode when the moon icon is showing up.

I had issue of my phone not ringing sometimes and it was due to being in do not disturb mode so I set this setting to manual only. 1st option .

This link helped me:

It turned out that my phone was switched to "silent" with the hardware switch on the left side of the phone. Because of the phone case that I have, I couldn't see this. I had to take my phone in and out of its case a couple of times because the switch kept turning off when I put it in to the case.

I know this question is old but I just figured it out on my phone and figured it could help someone.

When I click on sounds in the settings and check text there was so sound selected so even if the sound was on, my phone wouldn't ring for a phone call or text. I selected a ring tone for both text and phone calls and it works now. It had nothing to do with the 'do not disturb' as I originally suspected. Hope this helps. Good luck!

and when my phone goes into locked mode, calls go directly to voice mail, MY PHONE DOES NOT RING AT ALL . It is due to the stupid silence feature in the DND settings. You have only two choices 1. Silence ALWAYS and 2. Silence when iphone is locked. Why isn't there a silence NEVER choice?

Silence never = Do Not Disturb Off. I don't know how many times we can say that those features are only functional if DND is turned on. It sounds as if there is something wrong with your phone. I would start troubleshooting by resetting your settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. It's a bit annoying to have to redo every thing but it may solve your problem. The next step would be to restore from a back up. If that doesn't work, restore as new.

I also suggest you make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

FOR SOME UNUSER-Friendly reason. The assistive touch status of muting can affect whether the phone can ring while it is screen locked, even DND is turned off. volume is on , etc... Under accessibility options select ASSISTIVE TOUCH Then select the White circle Then select the Device icon of an Iphone Then select Unmute. (this will then show a button of a bell with a line through it)- Note this is the action the button will do when selected not the status of the process. Then exit the assistive touch/accessibility options

I just patiently ran through every suggestion here without result: incoming calls were still silenced, even when the phone was unlocked. When an incoming call was showing onscreen and there was agin no sound, I flicked the mute switch (on the top left side of the device) to on and then back to off. the incoming call began ringing. Every call since? No problem. Seems like there's a bug in this apple.

Robert, okhelpneeded has never made a post since so it's unlikely you'll get a reply.

You mentioned the phone does not always ring so I'm assuming it rings sometimes. In Settings > Do Not Disturb is Scheduled turned ON? If it is turn it off and see if that makes a difference. If that fails reset your phone. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. That will get you back to the way the phone comes from the factory with your current OS version intact but you won't loose any data, pictures, music, etc. In other words all the custom settings you made will be returned to their default mode.

The only way to get around the "silence" when the phone is locked, is to NOT LOCK your phone. In settings you need to unlock it, but that means anybody can see your texts/calls/ etc. if you leave your phone "unsupervised". Otherwise, if you set up a locking time, you're stuck with the "always" or "when it's locked" option.

I was missing many calls/messages because of this default that it was driving me crazy!!!
