You are 100% correct! Apple SHOULD issue a recall.

Just in my 13th month of ownership, the power button problem has started on my iPhone 5. Genius Bar rep refuses to do anything except for trying to sell me a replacement for $269. This is absolute BS. $700 phone & I am already being asked to shell out another $269 to make it work past just 1 yr. I am planning on calling AppleCare soon after thanksgiving to talk this further with Apple.

A $700 phone - hardware should not wear out so prematurely. This is a manufacturing defect that it seems all early iPhone 5 units have had. Apple should acknowledge defect in workmanship & recall all early iPhone 5 units.

I have purchased every single iPhone since iPhone 1 from 2007-2012. If I cannot get Apple to address this, I will not be spending any more money on Apple product upgrades.

On the other hand my handed down iPhone 4S to my wife is now 2 years old & still working just fine.

Can't believe, I had am iPhone 5 repair problem surface before the 4S.

I have the same issue - 14 months.

I thought it was a software issue and iOS7 would resolve it. Not so much. Called apple corporate and got an incredibly rude person who then referred me to another arrogant person who would not give me any useful information. Their only response is $269 to fix. It apparently it was my fault for assuming that a phone should last 2 years. I said that this was a well known issue with iphone 5 and they said that was not true.

This is my 4th gen of iphones and I've gotten applecare for all of the others and never had any issues so I guess it's my fault for trusting apple. Never again.

I also called the nearest apple store to get a quote to fix it and they do not give estimates over the phone so I would have to drive 150 miles (one way) to get an estimate that would most likely be the $269 anyway.

Has anyone had this fixed at the apple store without warranty? I would be willing to pay a reasonable price to fix an issue they caused but not $269.

For those who purchased their iPhone 5 on a credit card, most credit card companies extend warranties on electronic device purchases by an extra year.

I happened to call my credit card company, and yes, their extended warranty will cover the $269 replacement cost - of course with the added hassle of extra paperwork. So, it seems, I will have a replacement iPhone 5 without having to shell anything out of pocket.

But, that does not make it even with Apple. I'm sorry, Apple MUST recall this device, if they want me to buy any more of their devices.

A $700 phone needing a repair in just about a year is not acceptable quality by Apple standards.

I am sorry, I am never buying any future version of the iPhone. It seems, whenever they do a full re-design, they seem to not get manufaturing perfect.

I am now weary of my recently purchase iPad Air. I might just return it - its less than a month, I purchased it.

Cost to fix at Apple Store is same - $269 for the 32GB model and $229 for the 16GB model - they do nothing more than sending it off to AppleCare..who in turn simply exchanges it for a refurbished one.

I called AppleCare and visited the Apple store - no avail - exact same response from both places - it almost seems to me, they are very well aware of this iPhone 5 power switch issue & that have been specifically instructed not to entertain any complains regarding it - they just don't want to take responsibility for it.

Well, to me, that tells me - not to buy from them anymore...iPhone 5 is my last iPhone upgrade.

I am having the same issue. I've bought my Iphone 5 on the release day. Before the Iphone 5 had androids before and was sick of the quality. When I received the Iphone I thought my searching for phones were over. I thought my next phone would be an Iphone. I may have to look for a Windows Phone next. After researching the Iphone 5 before I got it I even when out and bought a MacBook Pro. I am one that loves everything that is in the technology world. I was always on a PC and not a Mac. With this power button issue I'm afraid that since Jobs passed the quality also passed. I just read an article online that states that they believe Microsoft is going to over take Apple in 3 years. It may be sooner than that.

Has anyone else thought it was funny that Apple stopped making the Iphone 5 when they brought out the 5c and 5s. And they are still selling the 4s.

My power button has progressively gotten harder to use over the last month. Now I have to push it on the Left side for it to work. I made a trip to the apple store(1hour away)last week and was told I had to come back since they didn't have any appointments. The apple sales person told me when I came back it would be a short visit they would just switch out my phone because there is no fix for the power button and it would be free. He also mentioned this happens a lot on the iphone 5. So I made an appointment and returned today. Today the story is the phone is out of warranty by less than 2 months and would cost me $169 to replace it with the same phone that would probably have the same issue in a couple months. The sales associate got loud and rude when i questioned why the story had changed from the previous week. My husband and I have been loyal Apple users for years(multiple iPads,2 iPad Minis, 2 Mac book Pro's, iMac and iPhones) buying and upgrading the day a new product is released. I have sworn by apple and talked friends into Apple products.

Today all that changes. I'm saddened that Apples quality and superior customer service has declined.

I refuse to pay more money for an inferior product. I will go back to using my IPhone 4 until my contract is up and then look at android choices.

Apple better get it together or they will end up losing a lot of business.

Mine is having the exact same problems since yesterday. 1 year warranty expired a month ago...

I'm extremely nervous, and disappointed.

Only the left side of the power button works, but if other people's experiences are right, it will become completely unusable in a few weeks. My friend has the same problem, his iPhone 5's button broke 2 weeks ago.

The iPhone 5 seems to be an inferior product to iPhone 4 in terms of build quality, I've never had any problem with my iP4...

I've always been an Apple fan but this is simply unacceptable. We don't even have Genius Bar's here in Hungary so I have to take the phone to a 3rd party repair service... Brilliant. :/

Unbelievable... all these people having the exact same problem just after 1 year... I lost my faith in Apple... at least in iPhone. My MBA works perfectly after years, but these constant problems with the actual iPhones are almost outrageous. And this time it is a very SERIOUS problem, which is not the user's fault. And yet they are ignoring it, and we are stuck with a faulty phone in the middle of the 2 year contract.... Might be my last iPhone ever, that is unless they start to respect their customers.
